First edition Philosopher's Stone fetches almost $20k
A paperback first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone sold for $19,120 at a rare books auction in Dallas, Texas. The book is one of only 200 copies issued in the first printing by Bloomsbury. The winning bidder was from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is a collector of vintage comic books. This snag will surely complement their collection.

omg!!!!!
Wow, can someone tell me about the 200 copies? Why only 200?
Hmm, not surprised they're from Dubai...probably a collector. But seriously, I actually expected it to go for a bit more. Either ways, its nice that someone is willing to pay that much for this book. Its slightly disappointing that there were only 200 copies.
I got a first edition hard back of the Sorceror's Stone for two dollars at Goodwill. that's pretty good right?
Cool beans.
well i expected it to go much much higher than that....i mean only in thousands??????????
Why only 200? But I can't believe it actually sold for that much. Someone actually bought a book for $19,120. When you say it like that it sunds crazy lol =D
I also own a first edition paperback copy of the Philosopher's Stone. Although I didn't pay nearly half as much.
I think it was 200 because they were afraid that the book wouldn't sell so good. Or it was something wrong in the printing. But I think it was that they just didn't believe that the book would be such a huge sucess as it has been. I'm not 100% shure though
woahh xD my 7 books have First edition written down.. does that mean i can sell them for that much? xD. (porpably wouldnt sell them anyways) bit it would be cool tough.. :)
Most of the first editions went to libraries and schools where they were lost or damaged....that is why there are so few.
First edition and First Printing is not the same thing. An edition can have more then one printing. Londs is right. Ben posts on this site?! This is a much bigger and cooler news to me. Go ben!
Haha, I agree with you above. We haven't heard from Ben (or Emerson!) in ages. It's nice to hear from them once in a while, though Andrew is awesome enough.
woahhh lats alot of dinero!!
Wow that's too cool. I wish I had that much to spend on a J.K.R. signed book!
Twenty grand seems to be a pretty fair price for a paperback edition with such a small print run. If you go to Abebooks.com and check out some of the prices listed for different copies you can appreciate what a bargain this is. Almost any copy with JKR's authentic signature will bring two grand. The current granddaddy of all seems to be an advance readers copy of Prisoner of Azkaban that has an asking price of 255 THOUSAND dollars! Thanks Ben.
