Will recent slump in DVD sales affect Half-Blood Prince?
Will recent slump in DVD sales affect Half-Blood Prince? The Los Angeles Times has an interesting piece on how a recent slump in DVD sales may effect Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's performance. Or will it?

[WB President Alan] Horn said he doesn't expect the soft DVD market to hamper sales of "Half-Blood Prince" because it's a "unique property." He believes that although budget-conscious consumers have become more selective about the DVDs they purchase, they have been demonstrating a desire to own big films like "Potter," "Transformers," "Twilight" and Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight," which according to The-Numbers.com was 2008's top DVD with more than 12.7 million units sold domestically.

Although Horn took a lot of flak from "Potter" fans when the studio pushed back the release of "Half-Blood Prince" to July from last November, the move may help boost DVD sales because the film will be released during the heavy gift-buying holiday season.

That last sentence confirms that the Half-Blood Prince DVD will indeed see a release before the holiday season! Thanks to Foss for the tip.

I like the way they wrote "effect" instead of "affect." :DD

DVD sales will depend on the movie. but for true potter fans who indeed consider these items as "unique property", they will definitely buy it... and that includes me :D

Posted by CandyCane23049 Jun 22nd 2009

None whatsoever. Especially since I'm going to end up buying it twice anyway. I going to buy the whole series again when I get a PS3.

Posted by joyful_slytherin Jun 22nd 2009

and i'll buy it definately, but im still waiting on any special releases and saving up for the ultimate box set when all 7 movies are finally released

Posted by something0quirky Jun 22nd 2009

Yes, well. I remember when everyone was talking about boycotting the movie in theaters because it was released late. I don't see that anymore. Of course it will have some impact, but overall? I think people will find it in their budget to buy it. If not, then when they get in to better terms with their money, they will probably buy it then, so I don't think we have anything to worry about in that section of sales. :D

Lol @ the first 2 comments. Im definitely buying the DVD =)

Posted by Her_my_nee Jun 22nd 2009

Def. buying the DVD anyways! And probs again in Blu-ray if/when I get a Blu-ray player xD Glad the DVD won't be out too long after the theatrical release!

i was just thinking today about when this dvd would be out. I'm so excited it will be out for the holidays! what a great xmas present!

Posted by iwantorlando05 Jun 22nd 2009

Why are they talking about the Dvd now??!! The movie hasn't even come out yet, but I know I'm going to buy HBP so I really don't care if anyone else doesn't. It's a MUST buy!

Posted by GrangerLaughs Jun 22nd 2009

Yeah I'd like to give him some more flak about that date change..........

Posted by meekel36 Jun 22nd 2009

Shouldn't it be "affect"? I'm calling the grammar police! :p

I hope that the DVD does come out before the holidays, that would be awesome. The time it takes for DVD's to be released usually depends on how well the movie does in the box office. It isn't unusual for a DVD to take up to 6 months to come out after the movie has left theaters. The more money made in the box office the longer it takes for the DVD to come out. With the success of the Potter films I really didn't expect the DVD to be out until sometime after the first of the 2010. Additionally, no one really knows what the economy will be like given that amount of time. But, Potter films have never really fit the mould, and with the amount of fans out there, I have no question about the number of DVD sales. I wonder what sort of gift will come with the new DVD! Last one was those book marks, i forgot what GoF came with, PoA I got a little journal with buckbeak on the front, CoS was both widescreen and full screen, and I have no idea what was released with SS. Hopefully its something AWESOME!!!!

Of course the DVD sales won't be hurt. That would be like saying since books sales are down, so will the sale of Harry Potter books. People will buy this movie, no matter the price

Posted by meekel36 Jun 22nd 2009

I'll be buying the DVD when it comes out or get it as a christmas gift... My whole family knows in a hp fanatic so someone will probably buy it for me. I'm asuming it will come out a week or two before Christmas... Ootp came out in mid December and it was in theaters at the same time hbp will be

Posted by IrishCat Jun 22nd 2009

I got my first DVD player especially for the release of "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" (My first DVD) Now, I have the whole collection and as soon as HBP is released ... it has a place waiting. Once all is said and done (meaning after DH Pt2) I wish WB would release a complete set of "Director's Cut" versions. Of course if they did it now ... I will get it. HEY WB! ... you are so interested in making $, why are you letting this opportunity pass?

Posted by Gryffindor1991 Jun 22nd 2009

down DVD sales wont effect this movie because it is so anticipated

Posted by hooked_on_Harry Jun 22nd 2009

i would LOVE a director's cut!!!! each movie could be 3 hours+ long and EVERYTHING would be included!!!!!!!!! would love all the outtakes and bloopers as well!!!

Posted by remusrox55 Jun 22nd 2009

...not to be nitpicky, but the headline should be "affect". >.>

Posted by yellowhippo Jun 22nd 2009

Posted by krazykobra29 Jun 22nd 2009

nahh i think itll do just fine

Posted by CandyCane23049 Jun 22nd 2009

I wish the some of the movies had special commentary form the actor's/directors too.

Posted by Monkey0 Jun 22nd 2009

Eeek getting so close now! I need to find out if my theater is doing a midnight screening.

Posted by Rach1593 Jun 22nd 2009

i dont understand why they would think HBP would have problems with DVD sales , even with the economy because it is so anticipated like someone else said! I wish it would actually come out in November so that we could have a double-dose of Potter in one month (DH in theatres and HBP on DVD!) Anyone agree?

Posted by angelina_johnson92 Jun 22nd 2009

I'll definitly buy this dvd, but Rach1593, the dvd sales would decrease because a lot of people don't buy dvds in general anymore because they use netflix and on demand. That's the reason why the blockbuster in my town closed. :(
