Cafe where JK Rowling first penned Potter reopens
Here's some great, bittersweet news. The cafe where JK Rowling started writing the Harry Potter books - with baby daughter Jessica by her side - has reopened. The cafe had closed and turned into a chinese buffet a few years ago, but a new owner has changed it back:Owner Moira McFarlane, 42, says she’s more than happy for customers to escape the cold and spend the whole day reading, writing or chatting with friends.
She said: “It’s a big space, so we need to make it cosy – we will welcome people to come along and sit all day – and write books if they like. ”The businesswoman, who already owns the Spoon Cafe in Old Town and runs the Storytelling Centre coffee bar on the Royal Mile, says the cafe is unlike any other.

Uncool. I thought they were talking about turnig it into a Potter musseum!!! Now that would be sweet!!
hells yeah i'd totally go!
I think it's awesome that they are opening up the cafe again!
That's awesome. It should never have been closed in the first place! A Chinese restaurant are you kidding me?! There are already a million of those. I'm definitely going to go! I'm so happy it's re-opened!
She actually wrote it in a cafe called "The Elephant Cafe" in Edinburgh, which is open, and has been open, for quite a while. ; ] If you ever ask someone who lives in Edinburgh, which I made sure to when I went, they'll tell you just that. Jsyk. (:
Lmao. I love how they add the little 'I wanna visit, don't you!?' bit at the end. Site traffic low, much?
Yes, I do want to visit. I might actually be able to do that someday :) (like in 2 years probably :P)
I was there back in 2007, it was sort of lame that it wasn't a caf
Yeah, I thought she wrote it in the Elephant Cafe ... but maybe she went to more than one place :) I visited the Elephant Cafe last summer - it overlooks Endinborough castle, which reminded me a bit of Hogwarts :)
and how exactly is this bittersweet?
I'm totally going there if I can escape class tomorrow! :) And, actually, the one she said she wrote in and "approved" as the official place where Harry Potter was written is this new one. She went to the Elephant House Later (By the way, they have amazing hot chocolate and the view of the castle is gorgeous!) When I first moved here I went on a literary tour of Edinburgh and we visited the chinese restaurant to see the plaque on the wall outside, and it was pretty funny - the tour guide told us they used to stand there holding signs trying to get tourists to go in for chinese food and it finally closed because no one went there. It would have been so much easier to get people to go if they had just said "JK Rowling wrote here!" >:)
Yay! I was there when it was a Chinese buffet (Buffet King, I think), and it was hideous. All I got to do was take a picture by the little plaque recognizing it's where JKR started HP. I wish I could go there now... I hope she still names is Nicholson Caf
Wow, that's awesome! I would love to go to both places where she wrote! Some day....
That is fantastic news! I am so happy they turned it back.
Hhhmmm...I guess that would be cool but I thought she wrote at the Elephant House. I went there this summer and it is definitely still open. So I don't know what to think.
yea id totally go if i evr go bk 4 a weekend break or sumthin...dat'd b real nice!!! mayb u guys can cum up wid sum excuse or other n cud have another of ur brilliant live mugglecast shows der....idea?? jst sayin!!! 0=D
Don't worry thequibbler101 the Elephant House is still open (and amazing!), its just not the only place where she wrote! :)
How is this bittersweet?
Wow, it's big! And look at those windows! I wish there was a nice cafe like that in my town~ I'll definitely go if I get the chance. I'm glad it's a cafe again!
Hmm I'll have to check that place out soon! Although I've lived in Edinburgh for seven weeks now and still haven't managed to stop by the Elephant House cafe! I need to step it up, apparently..
"Bittersweet" perhaps because of the memories the place holds, and the fact that the series has now come to an end? Just a guess...
it was a chinese buffet?? wtf?
That is so cool! Very glad that is happening. I live in California, but if I ever go to London, (which I hope I will) I will definately be there!
