Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

The children! The children! Won't someone think of the children?!

Posted by Maponto Oct 4th 2006

What an IGNORANT !!!!!!

Posted by hg06 Oct 4th 2006

Why cant she give it a rest??? Harry Potter is not evil. She should at least READ the books.

Posted by aviationrox Oct 4th 2006

Gotta love it when the few but their own opinions above and beyond the logic of the many... come on, she's beating a dead horse here.

Posted by ladyofemynarnen Oct 4th 2006

Wow ... um ... wow! Dude! She needs help!

Posted by Nimbuschick Oct 4th 2006

I DARE you to try and remove every book that pushes Christianity from the school library and then you'll see that you can't remove a book just because it promotes a religion. Wicca is peaceful and positive anyway, and Harry Potter celebrates CHRISTMAS and EASTER and HBP is choc-o-block full of christian themes and biblical imagery. Can't she quit while she looks like an idiot instead of looking like a perpetually annoying idiot?

Posted by the_shadows Oct 4th 2006

I suppose it's nice to know that Mallory's not going to win.

Posted by crazy_clare_123 Oct 4th 2006

what a weirdo the books arnt evil if they were why wouuld they be loved across the world?

Posted by tea_elle Oct 4th 2006

Wow. Jeebus, woman, please stop wasting everyone's time and money. There are far worse things to be concerned with right now than a children's book series that (oh noes!) just so happens to be about magic.

Posted by Drewen Oct 4th 2006

I am starting to get sick of people who have never read a book attempting to have it banned because of their *religious* references. State and Religion are seperate. Schools fall under state. Religion and Schools are seperate. She has now legal oppurtunity to ban the books... Although, it already is the favorite banned book... Anyaways, by banning this book, she would have to go through the same process with others. I would hazard a guess that there would be two books left on the shelf... Diary of Anne Frank and the Bible... But then again, the Bible has various magical references in it... Ban that too...

Posted by michael_xxx10 Oct 4th 2006

THIS WOMAN IS A BLOODY MUPPET

Posted by Rhivendell Oct 4th 2006

"They think these books are fantasies..." Because they are. The Witchcraft in Harry Potter is pure *fiction*. When was the last time anyone actually waved a magic wand and sparks flew out of it? "... but Wicca is a real recognized religion." True! It is! just like Christianity, it's a set of beliefs, with morals and rules by which to abide. Let me restate: "..but Wicca is a real recognized religion." Wicca has.... what.. to do with Harry Potter, and what to do with the Witchcraft in Harry Potter? The Witchcraft in Wicca is a variant of Prayer and worship similar to the rituals of the Catholic church. There's no 'wand flickin' magic lights and Dark Lords with killing curses in Wicca, lady.. *** Some people.. if they're going to put up an argument, then they should at least research it first instead of trying to compare it to something completely unrelated!

Posted by Clamshell Oct 4th 2006

OK. Look.. She must realize saying the books are EVIL and should be BANNED contradicts "The major themes are good versus evil, overcoming adversity, loyalty, friendship and courage." as she also said. *sigh* Can't she just give up? Harry Potter is not teaching us to be evil and if it is, so what? Isn't that up to the particular parent to decide whom can read what? OR ARE PEOPLE GETTING SO STUPID NO-ONE CAN DECIDE ANYTHING FOR THEMSELVES ANYMORE AND MUST HAVE LAWS FOR EVERYTHING? *sorry for capslockinsanity*

Posted by JeNaN Oct 4th 2006

what a bloody idiot. sum people u kno.. she never even read the books how does she kno if they r evil?? if she has any kids.. i hope they read the books and then freak her out by sayin "mum have you seen any owls yet? we are waiting for our hogwart letters" muahahaha

Posted by kissmysnitchumbridge Oct 4th 2006

I'll bet she hasn't read the books. Just don't let your own kids read them. She's so controlling! It's not a Christian's responsibility to make the world a more Christian place or even a better place, but to love others, worship God, and share the gospel. Book banning is not part of that mission. She'd be banning the Lord of the Rings too (Gandalf), and that was written by theologian C.S. Lewis' best friend Tolkien, who was a Catholic and actually converted Lewis to Christianity. Even if the books were glorifying magic or whatever, it's not her business to have them banned. God gave free will to do what you like. Even if they were bad, she's wrong. And they are not bad. Duh.

Posted by iceboots Oct 4th 2006

That's quite sick & very offence to connect Harry Potter with shootings at schools.

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Oct 4th 2006

*POP* [apparates] Good God. What this Laura Mallory person does not realize is that Wicca, indeed is a real religion, but it is not 'devil worship' as she obviously thinks it is. Wiccans do not believe in the devil, that is a Christian belief. Wiccans believe that there are gods and godesses - the number one rule in Wiccan belief is "harm none". I really wish these people who are pushing THEIR OWN beliefs on others (you have to admit, this is what this woman is trying to do) would E-D-U-C-A-T-E themselves on the issue they are trying to get rid of before they make fools of themselves. Harry Potter is not advocating witchcraft, it is a story (sigh...okay, it's fictional) of good v. evil. The sooner people realize this, the sooner they will sound a bit edumacated...(yes, I purposely said 'edumacated'). This is just pish-posh! HA!! Oh, and Ms. Laura Mallory??? PETRIFICUS TOTALUS!!!! I'm sure you'll understand...oh wait, you don't like magic...so sorry!!! Cooling off period then, right?

Posted by BLOODYHELL Oct 4th 2006

You know what they say... ignorance is bliss... She must be "one happy idiot"

Posted by Firebolt_Rider Oct 4th 2006

It really is a sad state of affairs. I am sure this woman believes in her heart that Harry Potter is evil-but it is the brainwashing of religous zealots that makes her believe this. As for the Wicca reference...where in Harry Potter does it ever mention Wicca? Or any religion at all for that matter...

Posted by Muggle_1993 Oct 4th 2006

i think she should read the books before making false claims.

Posted by loveslupin Oct 4th 2006

That woman really needs to get a new hobby...

Posted by ThEdArKlOrd06 Oct 4th 2006

You know what, if that woman doesn't want HER darn kids reading the best books ever, that's her problem...why should the other kids not be able to read Harry Potter cuz this woman doesn't like what it's about.

Posted by scarfyrre Oct 4th 2006

She has two more chances to have the books banned. She has another hearing at the BoE, and if they turn her down again, she'll have to go to the Georgia Supreme Court. They, too, will turn her down. Notice, too, she has no support for her ignorance. No other parents, no fellow church members, but just her ignorant little self. At this point she's about as dangerous to the First Amendment as my cat, and when she hears no two more times, she can enroll her children in a close-minded private Christian school and leave the intelligent people alone.

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Oct 4th 2006

This reminds me of Mr. Newdow who is trying to get "Under God" taken out of the pledge of allegiance (Those in America will know what that is). He also wants "In God we Trust" taken off all currency...because he's an athiest. Sigh...Funny how all these religions are trying to force their beliefs on others...Wicca isn't like that. And I agree, where in any of the HP books is there a Wiccan reference? That woman "needs to set her priorities"!

Posted by suomipirate Oct 4th 2006

uhm, these books never mention wicca (the religon) at all, in fact I don't think any of the characters actually practice wicca at all. It's just fiction anyway. I've never had the desire to join wicca after reading them and no one I know who's read them has either. So really her opinions have no real basis in reality.

Posted by colourmeconfused Oct 4th 2006

Hannah_at_Hogwarts: You're right, of course, but that one never works. Everything that isn't Christian is the devil's attempt to draw people to him. Apparently. We're just *that* gullible.

Posted by harrychick Oct 4th 2006

She should read "Finding God in Harry Potter" (I forget the author's name), but he is a Christian scholar, and a father, and after actually reading all the books he concluded they were a positive, not a negative, influence. I think that we should all be able to read what we like, and draw our own conclusions!

Posted by Abigail Oct 4th 2006

*sigh* Around and around and around we go.... My guess is she's offering up a few compliments on the books (which she's never read) in an attempt to soften the image of 'funadmentalist crackpot' she can see herself being saddled with -- which, of course, makes a lot of people immediately discount anything you say.

Posted by suomipirate Oct 4th 2006

Actually Hannah_at_Hogwarts "Under god" was added to the Pledge of allegiance in the 1950's to seperate the Commies from the red blooded Americans.... Supposedly they added it to Seperate the Comunists from pure blooded Americans back when it was illegal in this country to be a comunist. So in that case the idiot won... (supposedly Communists are the anti god or something.)

Posted by _silly_billy_ Oct 4th 2006

oh dear. so ignorant...so silly.:(

Posted by friz1416 Oct 4th 2006

There are more important things to worry about in the world right now then getting books banned. Children are reading and having fun doing it be thankful they can read and leave books alone. I don't like some books because I don't like the message they send but I'm not going to stop other's from reading the books. She can have her opinions but leave books out of them!

Posted by person92 Oct 4th 2006

I seriously doubt that any of the school shootings were influenced by Harry Potter.

Posted by silverlala Oct 4th 2006

You know all religions are practiced, there are a lot of people who don't like a religion and choose to ignore it. It's not like your kids are practicing wicca Mallory, they probably have not even read the books. I hate how people cry about something they don't understand. Get a life woman because your wants are not going to be met because everyone around you loves Harry Potter and we will win! Someone give me my wand, man!

Posted by 22tsuji22 Oct 4th 2006

Is wicca really that bad? x.x People are insane it's a book, a make-believe book....x.x, there are plenty worse books out there...about...i don't know but.... Well in all actualality does it matter? no one is forcing you to read this book, if you think its evil dont read it...right?

Posted by OneofThem Oct 4th 2006

What a complete waste of taxpayer dollars…

Posted by scurvy_cur Oct 4th 2006

i dont even need to ridicule these arguments she's done it herself with her attitude to reading the books. surely an argument like this should be an informed one! fine if she doesnt like the books i think everyone is entitled to their opinion but she surely has no right to control what everyone else reads!

Posted by Bagpiper Oct 4th 2006

Wiccan witchcraft is completley different from Harry Potter magic. As people are already saying, there aren't really magic wands that make things levitate or kill people. Geez weird fanatic people, get a life.

Posted by sxpnce Oct 4th 2006

She is wanting more than the usual 15 minutes of fame. Here's the link to the full article on MSNBC. You can also vote if Harry Potter is evil. The voting currently stands at: 11% yes 89% no I believe the No's have it. Lets all vote and get those No's some higher percents. http://www.m snbc.msn.com/id/15127464/ ?GT1=8618

Posted by PigWithHair Oct 4th 2006

How wonderful would it be if she put all her energy into something that is evil such as child abductions, starvation, cancer, child abuse, and countless other issues. Unfortunately, she is only interested in being in the spotlight. What an embarrassment.

Posted by Deppified Oct 4th 2006

Give me a butterbeer ... sheesh, she will never give up, huh? Wellwell, just as long Harry Potter stays in libraryies (which it will) I'm happy.

Posted by Cygnet Oct 4th 2006

Really, it is quite sad that this woman belives that she can try to regulate what students read. If she feels that her children should not be able to read the Harry Potter books, then it is up to her to instill those vaules in her own children. However, she can not parent other childeren, nor should should she deside what other students are allowed to read. (Freedom of speach is protected by the United States, Consatution the very foundation of todays country.) Also, a fiction book can not be blamed for the actions, no matter how vile those actions are,of others. I do hope that the actions of the school board will stay. Thus, allowing these books to stay on the shelves.

Posted by laxgoalie210 Oct 4th 2006

Shessh, you'd think that she has at least one friend who would tell her that there is no mention of wicca in HP so she can stop looking like such an IDIOT! Seriously, if she'd ever read the books herself she'd know that but right now she's just making herself ignorant of the topic she's fighting for and uneducated considering her earlier reason for not reading the books because they're too long.

Posted by meandlunabffl Oct 4th 2006

ooohhhhh lets all practice wicca....*calling out to all HP fans out there....lets unite and show them that HP is more than a book lets show them its real*....haha.....she really needs to give it a rest...

Posted by jenseeker62442 Oct 4th 2006

Yeah, see thats where the problem is. These so called "Christians" are so jumped up about Harry Potter being all evil and promoting satan and all that, but where does it mention any kind of ANY religion in the Harry Potter series? I have read the Bible, and there is more violence and evil in there (like God telling someone to kill their own children just to show loyalty) than in any of the Harry Potter books. JK doesn't go into graphic and sickening detail about death and destruction, she just makes it prominent that it is evil and Harry and the others are trying to stop it! Get a freakin life people! Read the darn book before you make unfounded accusations! Jeez!

Posted by Cygnet Oct 4th 2006

Oh pardon, my long ramble. I only ramble because I feel so strongly about this topic.

Posted by CrAzY_4_HP Oct 4th 2006

She still hasn't given up? My GOD!!!! She's not going to win, so why is she even bothering?

Posted by vigilance06 Oct 4th 2006

If she's so worried about the things that kids are exposed to ... she could try going after violence on TV rather than a series of books she's never read. There's a TON of Christian imagery in the book, but how would she know? She's only looked at the cover!! ... Or she could just be a real parent and talk to her kids about the difference between fact and fiction. Just a thought =]

SOMEONE'S been reading a little too much Farenheit 451....

Posted by hpstephanie Oct 4th 2006

OMG, people get over it, it is just a book(mind you, it is the greatest series ever), i have read all the books at least 3 times, some more than six times, i have yet to want to become a "witch", moreover, i am a confirmed Catholoic. People confuse me....
