Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

Posted by hplvr Oct 5th 2006

WHAT?! That's so stupid. I mean, at least finish reading them before you make a judgement. What's sad is that there are so many people that feel that way. Many don't even attempt to read them, but just assume that they are "evil" *eyeroll*

Posted by dobbyroxmysox Oct 5th 2006

wait noo actually shes rite..after reading harryp i decided to go out and start killing ppl, yeah i avada kedavrad everyone in my path using my secret magic EVIL wand......pshhhhhh this stupid idiotic woman just pisses me off soooo MUCH.

Posted by Cearbhall Oct 5th 2006

Ugh! this woman needs to Poag Ma'Hone (pronounced poag mah home).. but seriously.. who cares if witchcraft is a religeon... in the end, lady, ur kids r gonna beleive wht they wanna...

Posted by TTruett Oct 5th 2006

Everyone PLEASE e-mail the Georgia State Board of Education and tell them what you think!!!!! You can link to the board memebers e-mail off the home page. Please do this!!!! Even though I think she's got about a ice cube's chance in !@#* of ever getting the books banned.

Posted by loony_luna_lovegood Oct 5th 2006

The woman is stupid. She probably has never read the books even! Oh my good God, she should be worrying about other things, not a series of books!

Posted by Lady_Sabine Oct 5th 2006

*sigh* Anyone who believes there is a direct relationship between Harry Potter and Wicca is a complete idiot. I suppose I shouldn't expect people to actually do research before making accusations. I tend to be disappointed most of the time.

Posted by hp323232 Oct 5th 2006

what a HATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! she makes me soooooooo mad; the books are fantastic every child teen and adult should be able to read these books. i'll feel sorry for those children if the books do get banned. it's popoustrius (did i spell that right???) that some one would even consider banning the books uggggggghhhhh. i wish i could of logged on sooner to post me comment sooner!!!!!!!

Posted by skunklover Oct 5th 2006

i know that personally, every time i pick up a harry potter book i get the urge to pick up a gun and shoot someone...

Posted by TheOtherMinister Oct 5th 2006

I'm a Christian too but,... why don't you bring me someone who has ever been hurt by witchcraft, and then start telling me how bad it is.

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Oct 5th 2006

When you do that. You ruin childrens imagination, dreams and childhoods.

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Oct 5th 2006

http://i30.photobucket.co m/albums/c310/prophetie/i cons/dan012.gif remember dans extras thing, theres an avatar for it.. >> this woman is mad, rampid and manical. The best thing we can do is cherish how much hp means to us, and just hope every child will have the hopes of being able to read it.

Posted by kkatid Oct 5th 2006

Grrrrrr! she makes me sick- judging a book before she read it. She makes me sicker, to blame HP for the school shootings. Well, she actually said that with the shooting we would want to get the evils out of school, but if thats the case, then get councilers for al those deranged people and ban video games that actually promote violence and porn.

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Oct 5th 2006

Idiots, will in fact, be idiots. You know what though? We are right and she is wrong, we have expierienced one of the best books ever written. It has molded my child hood, i NEVER read until I read harry potter. So for all those little kids who wont get a chance to, I am sorry. And I hope they can somehow get a chance to. As long as everyone who wants to read it, can, then im happy. And the fact that the books are agasint her religion, DOES NOT give her the right to do this. Im an athiast and I don't walk into a court house and BAN EVERY RELIGIOUS BOOK just because i disagree with whats written in it. Please, I respect your religion, please respect the lack of mine.

Posted by Dobbys5150 Oct 5th 2006

You know, I almost hope she's able to ban the books, because if there is one thing that can insure that every child will read the HP books it is banning them. But then again she would know that had she actualy read the books.

Posted by Roonil Oct 5th 2006

Ahh what is wrong with this lady? Has she even read the BOOKS?? Obviously not, or she wouldn't have such screwed up views. Everyone I know who likes Harry Potter is really smart and awesome, and I think reading has influenced them in a GOOD way. Jeeez, this lady should do a little more unbiased research before she sues everyone in sight... It almost makes me laugh how ridiculous the things she says are.

Posted by GinnyandHarryForever Oct 5th 2006

Urghh! Don't even get me started on these people. So they think its "promotes witchcraft" but i like hpstephanie am a confirmed and pretty religious catholic whose obsessed with harry potter, and i promise you, Im not trying to hex people because of harry potters influence.

Posted by SiriuslyLupin Oct 5th 2006

This woman should seriously do her homework on BOTH Harry Potter and Wicca before she makes herself look like a moron. Too late.

Posted by Lily_Hbp Oct 5th 2006

Reading HP saved ME from a deep depression (my mother died tragically in Jan)... so I personally LOVE THE BOOKS, They gave my life and happiness back...I and will always support JRK for helping me and HP books. I love the imagination, the way JRK writes, the story, the characters... I just wish everyone could actually read and understand books. By the way, I am also Catholic, a mom and I understand why everyone is kind of upset. But never mind this woman, she just wants to get attention ... and she shouldn´t get it.

Posted by DondaLonda Oct 6th 2006

I can't get over how many times I have to defend Harry Potter to people who haven't even read it and are just taking other people's opinions. I finally made my mum read it and (shockingly) she didn't think it was that interesting but cute and fun and not really as bad as she had thought, and she's fairly conservative. But seriously, when did Harry Potter become a religion or promote Wicca. It's just a fantasy world, much like SO MANY other books. It doesn't condone violence it just tells a story of a boy growing up and how he would act. But if you look at the list of famously banned books it just goes to show... PEOPLE WILL BAN ANYTHING IF IT'S WELL WRITTEN!!!!

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Oct 6th 2006

If shes going to ban Harry Potter, heck, why don't you just take down every book written with a cuss word. How bout you ban every novel that uses imagination and different lands. Why dont we ban everybook that doesnt support god. Why dont we also ban every novel that has a protagonist. Hell lets just remove every book ever written. If this woman can find something wrong in harry potter, whats stopping here there. I just hope everyday she doesn't stroll across a little book called The Lord of The Rings. Tolkien would roll over in his grave.

Posted by GinnyandHarryForever Oct 6th 2006

I would also like to add that even if this crazy lady thought that removing them because she thinks they support Wicca (WHICH IS RIDICULOUS IN ITSELF!, I see way more christian refernces than anything else) she certainly isn't trying to remove all books with christian references. This woman is clearly predjudiced and ignorant. And, religion is part of the world, keeping it away from kids just isn't going to happen.

Posted by looneylovebad Oct 6th 2006

o the logical fallacies!

Posted by Books_4_eva Oct 6th 2006

What really gets to me about this is that she came up with the hole hp caused that school shooting. I mean it was done by two very disturbed adult men who I really doubt would be affected by Harry potter. She had no right to bring that up. And what she obviously doesn’t get is these books are fiction, sure there is evil in them with voldermort and all that but so do most books. That is what makes it a fiction and that is how the hole "good vs. evil" thing works. *roles eyes*

Posted by Muggle_1993 Oct 6th 2006

I agree with Books_4_eva. if they did not have good vs evil, there would be no story

Posted by melcat Oct 6th 2006

haha! this woman made mugglenet! I'm so amused! she should be so proud of herself. I live a couple counties away from all this chaos, and it's always in the news... makes me go into a huge rant every time. I'm sure everyone here has said it all already.

Posted by Potty_eater Oct 6th 2006

OMG! geez woman... the books don't promote ANY religion at all! Geez! Why don't they just ban the books promoting christianity too? anywho, Wicca isn't even bad! She's just a narrow-minded fool who hasn't even read the books.

Posted by atharvarya Oct 6th 2006

it is completely stupid step to ban harry potter books

Posted by AriaAlways Oct 6th 2006

You know what I'd really like to be able to do? Go over there with just ten Harry Potter fans, and argue against her, with plenty of references to MuggleNet, of course. It's been said before here, but Tolkien and Lewis were both Cristians, and they produced some of the most famous books, about magic! Laura and Kyle just need to be smacked upside the head.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 6th 2006

Luca2021 said "In the good ol' days, kids read about heroic teens that were doing great things, like The Hardy Boys who were out there solving crimes and drinking milk."..............ROTFL , Luca. But I bet you get some heat for the post nonetheless. Satire is not a language that youngsters tend to be fluent in.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 6th 2006

HPFANTimothy, shut up. Everyone here remembers the trouble you caused here a few weeks back. Were you hoping they had forgotten? You've already proven yourself to be an idiot weirdo. I hate Christians, and it is my right to. It is a disgusting reigion that teaches hatred. Oh and PS: Jesus called. He said get out of his fanclub, he hates you. :-)

Posted by 827heather Oct 6th 2006

I just wanted to say that I myself am a Christian, but I would never dream of trying to ban books just because they talk about magic. I personally love the Harry Potter books, they are probably one of the few books that I have really been able to get into. I think its important to remember to not be judgmental or condemning, especially if you don't even have a full idea of what it is you are condemning. People tend to think that if you don't stand for something you won't stand at all. While that may be true, it is also important that one can win an argument, but lose the overall battle. In this lady's case, I think that is what is happening. I think if she actually took the time to read the books (and no, God's not going to condemn her for doing so) she would see that, like previous commenters have said, there is really a lot more to it and like they said, even a lot of Christian references. More importantly though, if you are a Christian and you are reading this, remember that there are more effective ways of sharing the Gospel than banning books!

Posted by Anniina Oct 6th 2006

What a moron..

Posted by jolovesron Oct 6th 2006

if someone has said this already i'm sorry (i'm not reading nearly 500 posts to find out!) but doesnt Mallory seem similar to Malfoy? Hhhmmmmmmmmmmmm??!!!!!!

Posted by pensieveuser07 Oct 6th 2006

I live in Georgia, and I think that it is ridiculous that this woman would thry to relieve the books. Almost all literature that is worth reading has some kind of mystic elements.

Posted by scooter081 Oct 6th 2006

I agree with 827heather. I myself am a Christian and I love the Harry Potter series. These books are not Satanic and they do not promote witchcraft. They are fiction and are meant to be enjoyed. There are so many other terrible things happening today in our society, school shootings, etc., that this lady could stand up for and fight against. Think of how many other classic literary tales you would have to ban if you banned everything involving witchcraft, etc. Remember Shakespere's Hamlet, Macbeth. How about Cinderella and Snow White?

Posted by headlessseth Oct 6th 2006

I love when people are made fools by others.

Posted by crowchild Oct 6th 2006

I suppose she hasn't realized that she as a parent has an influence over her child's decisions in life. If she's really that concerned that a book can sway her child into a different lifestyle maybe she should reevaluate her parenting skills. I would be thrilled if my son turned out like Harry Potter!

Posted by lizbet Oct 6th 2006

people like this drive me crazy because they usually bash Harry Potter yet support The Lion the witch and the wardrobe - the excuse being C.S. Lewis is a Christian author - hello - J. K. Rowling is a Christian author as well - obsessed people like this woman have way too much time on their hands and should read a book or two instead of bashing them - grrrrr

Posted by s1pixie Oct 6th 2006

What kills me is that in the time she's spent protesting the books, she could've actually READ them. If she would've taken the opportunity BEFORE she started talking about something she doesn't understand, she would've realized how mistaken she was, and she could've saved everyone a lot of trouble. Incuding herself. At this point, after everything she's said, even if she reads the books and decides that she was wrong, it's too late. She's already made a fool of herself.

Posted by trag Oct 6th 2006

Yes, she could have taken the time to read them, but she was afraid of being tainted by the *evil*. However, she's not afraid to go to court and make an idiot of herself. As a Wiccan, I would like to take the oppourtunity to say that there are hardly any Wiccan themes in those books. There are a few things, barely, but most of what's symbolic in those books is Christian. Basically, she's protesting the main and loving themes of her own religion.

Posted by MuggleTowne Oct 6th 2006

I wonder if anyone has gone as far as to send her hate mail to her house...and I dont doubt that it has happened...and I hope that she feels like *poop* when she reads how she makes others feel and to see that no one cares about her baseless case...and I dont remember who mentioned it earlier...but her kids will probably be one of the ones reading it whenever they can just because that is what kids do..."DONT DO THAT!..." ok mom I wont {yeah right?!} Ü

Posted by Vivian Oct 6th 2006

Given all the horrors that Christianity has unleashed on the world, such as the inquisitions and the (ahem!) witch hunts, perhaps we should leave the Wiccan books on library shelves and instead purge all Christian books. We want to eliminate evil, right? *eyeroll*

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 6th 2006

What an idiot, the Harry Potter books are AGAINST EVIL! There are much more disgusting things going on in this world than kids reading a book! She should be sent to jail for the worlds biggest IDIOT! I bet you she has never even read the books, she just looks at the cover. And listens to other people( more idiots, great) say there evil! I f you ask me she is the evil one!

Posted by gryffingirl99 Oct 6th 2006

Oh my god! WHAT?! THIS WOMAN IS BACK AGAIN?!!? Didn't she learn her lesson the first time? I am an obsessive HP fan, and have never had any desire or thoughts on becoming wicca. (the religion) I'm not saying the wicca people are bad or anything, it's just that I've never had the desire. In fact, I'm a catholic, and the books have never swayed me. Ever. Never ever. Never. I've read all of them at least 14 times each. Never ever. I do not practice witchcraft or wizardy. (OK, sometimes when I'm to lazy to get the tv remote I'll mutter "Accio", but then I'll go get the remote, of course. Don't we all? lol. I'm not practicing witchcraft!) And I strongly agree with scooter081. There are so many other problems in our world today. Say... Global warming, for example? AND THIS WOMAN IS WORRYING ABOUT A TOP-SELLING CHILDRENS BOOK SERIES! Ughhh... You guys have no idea how much this infuriates me.... Ughhh! This woman... Grrr..

Posted by Todesengal Oct 6th 2006

OH my.. That makes me so freaking mad. What the hell is peoples problems? Is she trying to purposely make our entire society completely illiturate? I've met priests inside church who are fans of the HP series! THese people need to get out of the dark ages! *GASP* That device over there is projecting images!!! IT"S BAD MAGIC!!! *hiss*

Posted by jeremy_8291 Oct 6th 2006

she's probably a jealous writer that's not going anywhere lol I mean hasn't she EVER heard of the book "Finding God in Harry Potter"? How can you find God in Harry Potter without Harry Potter? This woman is absolutely insane! I don't think she really knows what she's doing! What if Harry Potter is somebody's chance at becoming a Christian! It really could happen and probably has many times.... take that in your pot and stir it, Laura!

Posted by aquamarine116 Oct 6th 2006

Oh please, if she has a problem with the books then fine, but she shouldn't try to be banning Harry Potter and ruining it for other people.

Posted by BellaB Oct 6th 2006

Wow. Thats pretty pathetic. And sick that she thought one of the reaons all those kids died was because of Harry Potter. She honestly discusts me.

Posted by peruviangurl021 Oct 6th 2006

this woman is sooo ignorant. She says because of the recent shootings to remove evil things from school but what about how millions of children got into reading by reading the hp books?.. what would u prefer kids reading or misbehaving, doing drugs, etc. The books are FICTION as long as parents set that clear to smaller children who read the hp books then everyone understands that the hp world is made-up and just something to read for a good time.. i think people and even my own religion( catholic) is too stubborn to understand that it's FICTION... y ban books that are good for children???
