Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

Posted by Dancer_1021 Oct 8th 2006

well it shouldnt be banned.

Posted by ZodiacRose Oct 8th 2006

O.k.....I'm not sure how many times I am arguing things. First of all. DO NOT judge a book that you haven't read. Because that is called "Don't judge a book by its cover." Second of all. I have to say this before i bring my second point. I am a Lutheran. It is a sub-form of christianity. My grandpa is a pastor of a methodist church. So don't you think that i am wrong because i thought long and hard about this point. Banning the "Harry Potter Books" is like banning the Bible. Now what is my point? From probably an athiest's point of veiw. The Bible could be just another book that condone's witchcraft. My reasoning? They talk about witchcraft in the first testament because Saul went to see a witch about connecting with a prophet (i forget wich one). And the Pharoh's 'wizards' also int he story about Moses. But *i'm sorry God for saying this* what Jesus did could be considered witchcraft also. And all the other hero's of the bible that had God's aide. My ultimate point? What the woman is saying is hypocratic!

Posted by broadwayybabe Oct 8th 2006

haha wow. That's really all I have to say.

Posted by Grey Oct 8th 2006

Georgia lady--your my hero...only not really. I know what you need for Christmas--some BIG old Harry Potter audio tapes and a nice shiny new tape player. That will take care of any "I can't read it because it's to long" phobias that you may have my dear.

Posted by rivendellroseOSU Oct 9th 2006

Actually, come to think of it, we should be proud of Jo for possibly making yet ANOTHER banned book list. I mean, hey, she said she's honored to be in such company, right? And she should be. So congrats, Jo, on people wanting to ban your books AND the great free publicity! :D

Posted by ans Oct 9th 2006

she is a bleeping idiot who in their write mind would ban the most popular childrens book of the year. is she on crack. there too many poeple who read the books so she can kiss my (censored).i mean come on at every bookstore in most countries their is a huge party.i reserved my copy of hbp in febuary and it came out in july.

Posted by werepixie Oct 9th 2006

There are a couple things that amuses me here. The obvious that the books are so evil yet she's never bothered to actually read them to find this out. Also that she brings up Wicca which I really have no idea what the comparison here is suppsed to be. Wicca is a religion in the books Magic is what you are not what you belive. And honestly to me bringing up the recent school shootings is just a really bad move. They have nothing to do with each other and I'm getting so sick of people using fear tactics.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 9th 2006

Hate to tell you this, Timothy, but Mugglenet didn't remove my comment. However if you ever make a threat toward me again I will see to it that you are banned. And nothing you have said has changed my mind, by the way. In fact all you've done is proven that I am right to hate Christians.

Posted by Death_eater_dobby Oct 9th 2006

My books are haunted cool!!! This lady is just a mentaly challenged fun hating muggle.;)

Posted by Harry_is_our_King Oct 9th 2006

i would write a really long paragraph, but i am to angry at this idiotic woman to do anything right now...

Posted by emmyv05 Oct 9th 2006

Hey guys, how many times is this. I am doing a paper on censorship on Harry Potter books at school and I need to know how many times she has appealed. This is her second time right?

Posted by AccioRon Oct 9th 2006

I may be satanic, brainwashed, and doomed to hell, but I'm satanic, brainwashed, doomed to hell, and happy!

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 9th 2006

There is no Satan, no Hell. So read whatever you want. There's also no Heaven or God, so...well, read anything you want. People who let such an archaic and outdated set of beliefs as Christianity run their lives today deserve pity.

Posted by ZodiacRose Oct 9th 2006

I believe this is the first time she appealed the case. So it would be the second time the case i looked over. And it is BS! She should have no right to do such a thing. I mean, Harry Potter is a BOOK SERIES. It's not like they are telling the kids to go out and study Wicca. Because it doesn't. It just a story about good verses evil. It relates to teenagers. And, in my opinion, it relates a bit to real life. Just a tiny bit though.

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 9th 2006

What an idiot, the Harry Potter books are AGAINST EVIL! There are much more disgusting things going on in this world than kids reading a book! She should be sent to jail for the worlds biggest IDIOT! I bet you she has never even read the books, she just looks at the cover. And listens to other people(more idiots, great) say there evil! If you ask me she is the evil one! What is she going to do to us if we read the books put us in Azkaban or something, if you ask me she belongs in there! She really needs to get a life and a brain!

Posted by TheWordsUnspoken Oct 9th 2006

oh...my...gosh... words can not express how STUPID I think it is for someone to want the hp books removed for a school library.

Posted by zaks_baby_girl Oct 9th 2006

You know she only wants it out of the libraries because its not HER religion. She shouldnt win because she thinks its a bad religion. ugh i hate those kind of people, if she wins somebody should start raising *pardon me* hell.

Posted by ParasMommy Oct 9th 2006

Laura Mallory and her friend Anne Feaster are zealots plain and simple. I wrote to Laura (her address is listed) back in July. She forwarded my letter to Feaster who sent a package in an attempt to sway me from Potter. I posted my reply to her on my blog, but I am sure that it won't make a difference. These people are so closed minded that an ounce of intelligence cannot penetrate into their timy little brains. Sad ... too sad ...

Posted by cutupangel423 Oct 9th 2006

AnyaMarcos, I'm Christian. But I am nothing like this woman. This woman can go to hell.. Better yet she should be condemed to Limbo. I have friends that are of other religions and I've read the harry potter books. I belive that Heaven and Hell are real. I'm not trying to shove this down your throught but i think you need to do as much research on Religion as her as well.

Posted by Abbeyme Oct 9th 2006

Oh Goodness Lady. Give it up. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WIN!! It's the schools choice whether or not they have the books and if you don't want your daughter to read them, YOU do something about it like disaplin her better and don't thy to make the SCHOOLS do your job for you by having them take them out of their libraries because I am in High School and I personaly LOVE the books. So BACK OFF!!!!!!!!

Posted by Abbeyme Oct 9th 2006

You know what people, I am really frustrated with this lady too, but I bet it doesn't help to swear so please if just for me don't swear when you post your blog things.

Posted by dobbyroxmysox Oct 9th 2006

uhhhh EXCUUUSE U wiztiz784 just cuz she ignorant that dont make her american..ha i bet u is just as ignorant her

Posted by wiztiz784 Oct 9th 2006

No I'm not. It's a fact that Americans are rather stupid. And I think that you "dobbyroxmysox" are ignorant, too along with every other American in this world.

Posted by hp_fanatic89 Oct 10th 2006

well................what a cow. just because she has strong beliefs, doesn't mean she can force them down other peoples throats.......maybe if she just read the book...people make me so mad. like although the books are about magic they are firsst and formost a story about a boy trying to rid the world of something evil!!!! if she doesn't want her own kids to read them then fine but not everyone agrees with her view. my whole family has red harry potter including my mum, dad and grandparents!!!!

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 10th 2006

Look! wiztiz784, its only this woman thats stupid NOT all americans! If i'am so stuipd then why did I skip a grade!!!! Looks to me like you are the stuid one! P.S This Mallory woman is an idiot.

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 10th 2006

Ok AnyaMarcos. I respect your beliefs totally, but you shouldn't hate Christians. We've done nothing to you. Just read my comment again: OMG AnyaMarcos? What kind of person are you? I am sorry that I overreacted on you earlier, but you hate Christians? And you have a problem with other religions? Can you not remember what happened in the days of Adolf Hitler? In World War II? When that terrible and evil man (and a Christian I must regret) killed innocent Jews just because he had a problem with their religion? Because he hated them! And now you are just reminding me of him! Telling me that you hate my religion, I am a Catholic, and there is nothing NOTHING wrong with us. And I got terribly offended when you said 'Jesus doesn't want me in his fan club.' My grandmother would be absolutely disgusted if I showed her your comment. I know that you probably live hundreds and hundreds of kilometers away from me but you should be happy that I didn't. I am sorry to say this but you make me sick! Blaming a religion for no reason. What do you have against us Christians? What did we do to you? I'm asking you that question once... **Back to myself again** Now AnyaMarcos, you shouldn't hate Christians. Half of this comment board are Christians, and I suppose a quarter or so of them are Catholics. Like me, what do you have againts us? You remind me of Hitler (sorry for saying that but you kinda do)

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 10th 2006

And I hate to tell YOU this AnyaMarcos, but I am not threatening you. I am just saying that you remind me of one of the most horrible and evil persons ever to walk the planet. And by the way, I wouldn't be the one about to get banned. You are the one being biased against Christians. You are the one who said 'Jesus wants to kik you out of his fan club.' It's you, not me, you. It's not my fault you are prejudice against us Christians... For no reason. Where did you get that idea anyway? That we teach evil and witchcraft! FYI! The Catholic Church teaches us to forgive and love, not to kill and brew potions every night, lol! All the people who go to a Catholic School would understand, and who pay attention in RE. We don't hate, we learn about the Gospal ect... The Feast Day's of the Saints and all that stuff. What did you think they teach us AnyaMarcos, what?

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 10th 2006

Oh yes, Timothy, comparing me to Hitler is so very Christ-like. How proud your parents must be. Look, you're a stupid little psycho zealot. You need therapy and strong medication. You are Not Right In The Head. Now go play. And always remember that you have done nothing to make me like Christians any better.

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 10th 2006

Posted by Mommabez Oct 10th 2006

OK, as a Mom, I understand that she's trying (in her own way) to protect her children from a preceived danger - that's an admirable endeavor. But she's doing the children and herself a major disservice when she essentially refuses to to properly research her cause. As a responsible parent, I read the books and magazines that my kids are interested in, as well as watching the movies and shows they want to see *before* deciding if they are acceptable or not. It doesn't matter if I like the books (I love the Potter books, though), I just need to make sure they are age-appropriate, and don't promote values that I disagree with. There have been times I have had to tell my children "No", and there have been times that I didn;t like the books, but they met our family's criteria for 'acceptable material' and I've said "Yes" (The Capt Underpants series is a glaring example of the latter - gross, but acceptable and age-appropriate for my son at the time). That, I think, is the difference between Ms. Mallory's method of uninformed over-reaction, and responsible parenting. We pray weekly for her eyes to truly open to the alarmist example she is setting for her children, so that she can at least set a better example for them in future. Hopefully she doesn't vote the way she chooses to ban books. Imagine voting for the President based on 2 commercials and an internet ad? (shivers)

Posted by wiztiz784 Oct 10th 2006

Whatever.... I hate stupid little Americans. They just care about themselves and nothing else in this world. The U.S is a disgrace to the whole world and that's that.

dayaaamn tizwiz784 and AnyaMarcos yall just some HATERZZZZ.

Posted by natrah Oct 11th 2006

aii... religion is a sensitive issue, but really.. kids these days are far smarter than before, are we not? we actually know, that it is all just fictional. maybe there should be a disclaimer inside every hp series, saying like "this story bla bla bla..watever you put inside a disclaimer.." haha! for people like this mrs.mallory, who cant differentiate between fictional and fact.. hehe at least we're smarter than her.. z8P

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 11th 2006

Oh tut tut. I still don't understand you AnyaMarcos, and I never will. Nor will anybody else unfortunately. You've just got to understand to respect all religions, unfortunately for you, you are in the wrong. Not me, and when I said about comparing you to Hitler, I didn't say you’re him. I just said that you and him share something that nice people do not have. Hating other religions... poor you. And I wouldn’t say that I’M needing therapy. You’re the one who’s (sorry I have to repeat it) being biased and hates a religion for no particular reason. Because you just cannot understand anything. And if you do not know, you should (I am not being biased here) take into account, that some; I’m saying ‘some’ Catholic Schools produce better learning than State Schools. Aha, it's a fact. I mean, I come from Melbourne, Australia and we just got this new piece of technology in called the 'Promethean.' It's a huge board that is practically glued to a wall, and is showered by an over-head projector with light. It's quite fabulous actually. I am not saying that State Schools aren't good or anything, I'm just saying that Catholic Schools aren't all bad. I go to an all-boys catholic school called Xavier College (won't tell you what campus I go to). And by the way, you haven't told me WHY you hate Christians, if you ask me; I think that you are prejudice against us for no reason. You’re just following all the other idiots who share your passion. Got to go loner, please respond! And by the way, what do you think they teach us at Catholic schools? Witchcraft, sorcery? LOL! In R.E (Religious Education) we simply learn about the Gospel and how Jesus lived and the great things he did. Like how he helped people, how he cured the lepers, how he sacrificed himself to save us. How he was arrested by Pontius Pilot and all that stuff. And by the way, please don’t agitate me; I’m just about to make my Confirmation. And speaking about R.E, we barely ever learn the subject! Most of the time at s...

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 11th 2006

-chool we are learning other subjects. Like Maths, English, Art, Drama, Humanities, P.E (Physical Education), ICT (Internet Communication Technology), Science and every Wednesday (today) we have Sport! Which takes up 3 periods (3 hours) of the day! Again, please respond to this AnyaMarcos, I’m dying to hear why you hate Christians! P.S – I can recommend a REALLY good psychiatrist to you!

Posted by DTurtle Oct 11th 2006

You know I think all the points have been made. And it all comes down to raise your own kids and stay out of other people's business. Instead of blaming everyone else why doesn't she take some time to actually communicate with her kids and explain what’s what (i.e. being a parent)... Seriously if you didn't want to take the responsibility to raise kids maybe you shouldn't have had them. Also trying to link a book, video game, movie, music or any other form of entertainment to violence, crimes, “evil” or any other perceivably unmoral act is really weak. In the end we all still have free will, I think people need to stop using scapegoats, fess up and take the consequences of their choices. We are all human, in all of us lays the ability to be good or bad, again its called FREEWILL (humans* all have this though it's been contested throughout the centuries). We live in a world which does not support only one way so... I would like to offer up an alternative way for her to protect her family. Take all this money she's spending on court and instead build a bomb shelter, stock it with enough food to last till the children are of age and lock her family in. Then she will no longer have to worry about the "evils" of the world harming them. *is a general statement and does not always apply

Posted by DTurtle Oct 11th 2006

Also things I've learned on the way don't hate Christians (or whatever other group you can think of), have a "large dislike" of ignorant people. *grin* ;P. Most religious factions have some sort of judge not least ye be judged, so let people have their beliefs even if they aren't in line with yours. Don't expect people to defend or explain their beliefs just because you want to disprove them or prove something to them. Ok kiddies play nice.

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 11th 2006

Look "wiztiz" your the jerk you dont care your just coming here to get people angered, and where are you from canada the lamest country EVER.Just because Americas President is a jerk (no offense to anyone here that likes Bush) that does not mean everyone is.We do care about the world, when ever something bad happens America is always the first one there. So go spread you prejudice views some where else. You are as bad as the Malfoys.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 11th 2006

Timothy, I hate Christians because they claim to be followers of Jesus, but preach hate. I hate Christians for disgracing the name of the man who their religion is supposedly based on. There are no loving, good, compassionate Christians anymore. And you've shown everyone here that I am right with your hateful comments to me.

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 11th 2006

Look "wiztiz" your the jerk ,you dont care ,your just coming here to get people angered, and where are you from canada(I mean no offense to canadians, I have been to canada there are some nice people there, but I found it sort of lame, but remember ,I mean no offense to you at all) most people ther hate americans.Just because Americas President is a jerk (no offense to anyone here that likes Bush) that does not mean everyone is.We do care about the world, when ever something bad happens America is always the first one there. So go spread you prejudice views some where else. You are as bad as the Malfoys. Some countrys burn the flag but as soon as they have a problem it's "America help us,please".So next time think before you type.As I said before you are just like the Malfoys and this Mallory lady.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 11th 2006

Wiztiz is entitled to his opinion, guys.

Posted by duckers99 Oct 11th 2006

I'm american and I think our country as a whole is pretty stupid. No, not every person in america is stupid, like wiztiz is implying, but I think I know where he's coming from. Our government tends to think that we're the greatest country in the world. We're the ones that cause most of the worlds problems - nuclear weapons, global warming, and most of the worlds pollution to name a few. We, as a country, suck. But first of all, most of us aren't that stupid, and we're going to the UK as soon as can, and second, that has absolutely nothing to do with this lady trying to ban Harry Potter books. As for AnyaMarcos, you've got your idea of Christians completely warped. I dont blame you, I blame the media. The only Christians you see and hear about on the news are the extremists and the ones who really dont know anything about their religion. I'm not Christian, but most of what you see of Christianity is completely wrong. Hating gay people isnt in the Bible. Hating non-believers isnt in the Bible. All this stuff has been taken and twisted by todays society. Christians are supposed to live for God and love everyone as their equal: "Love thy neighbor." Just because our stupid generation screws everything up, dont blame the religion - blame the assholes that warped it.

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 11th 2006

Yes, everyone is. But he/she sould not call all americans stupid, and then call that fact, but it is a lie. P.SAnyaMarcos , you are right about radical christans,my aunt is one and she told me when I was 5 that I was going to hell!

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 11th 2006

This Mallory woman is an IDIOT!!!!

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 11th 2006

Anyone who bases their opinion of Americans on the news they hear about us in other countries WOULD think we are all idiots. That's the way we are protrayed. Duckers, I do base my opinion of Christians partly on how they are shown in the media, butmostly on my own experiences. You will never find a group of people who feel more justified and noble in their hatred of others than Christians. And that IS a fact.

Posted by GrownUpChick Oct 11th 2006

Oh, just when you thought it was safe...Anya's back. The last time this Mallory woman was discussed here I was really enjoying reading the comments...that is until the day I came back here to find that they had been disabled. I blame Anya for that because she attacked someone she doesn't even know; calling her/him(I can't remember the name) a stupid eleven year old, etc. Everyone has a right to their opinion. EVERYONE, okay? This particular comment board is supposed to be about how we feel about this woman's attempt to have the books banned in her kid's school. In my opinion, there is never any need to use this comment board as a place for trashing other people you don't even know. And to Timothy: don't take Anya's stuff so personally, okay? And please cool it with the threats!

Posted by harrys_wand Oct 11th 2006

SHE'S A MUDBLOOD!!!! anyway, WHY SHIP?

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 11th 2006

"In my opinion, there is never any need to use this comment board as a place for trashing other people " Kind of like you just did to me, you mean? Last comment I am making to you, by the way.
