Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

That is absolutely disgusting. All she'll be succeeding with this ridiculous tirade of hers is an uprising against Christians - she'll pretty much only succeed in labelling herself as an ignorant bigot. How does she plan to make an educated argument when she isn't even educated? She doesn't know what the books are even about, having not even read them, and furthermore, she labels Wicca (which isn't even a part of the series) as evil because she's horribly misinformed...and really just plain horrible. I'm sure Fahrenheit 451 has been referenced here already, but that's a book we should make her read - so that she can see that ignorant people like her are really the ones responsible for what will surely be the downfall of literature, and subsequently the downfall of creative and independent thought. I say if anyone should be banning anyone, it should be me banning her from banning anything. Or we should have her arrested, because having kids when you're that stupid is child abuse.

Posted by ZodiacRose Oct 11th 2006

Haha, child abuse. I know. But the even more stupidity of it. She is more concern about blaming a book series for all the violence in world than blaming television shows, the internet, and video games. Video games EPECIALLY, because of their violence. For instance, HALO2. I'm not sure how many kids i listened to, talking about how they play the game. It is just SICK. We should be greatful that we have books like Harry Potter. Back in the early 1800's or so they waited 10 years for a book to come out. Now, we have internet sights popping up in less than 10 seconds. With this technology, how do we use it?! To blow off some guy's head, defeat king kuppa, save the princess, make simulation characters make love, and god knows what else!

i think americas kinda uhhhhh retarded..but i dont like how u were sayin that evryone up in the u.s is stupid or wutever....hecka trying to be all stereotypical or whatever.=]AND i dont like this mallory woman.

Posted by Kreenie Oct 11th 2006

This woman is the most ignorant and offensive type of person imaginable. Why is it that she feels the need to insult both J.K. Rowling AND the Wicca religion, which, mind you, has NEVER had anything to do with 'evil'? Wow, someone needs and enema.

Posted by Shelledfade Oct 11th 2006

PFFFTT is all i gotta say to this women, she probably will end up having derranged and peranoid children that never see the light of day in this creative and imaginitive world... And that just sickens me.

Watever AnyaMarcos. Unfortunately, you are going to stay the stuck-up prune you always have been. Goodbye and 'bad luck' in the real world! I hope that one day you understand the true meaning of Christianity! Because you should know that you are going to have a very loely life, because no one will like you! The friends you may have now are not your real friends! You need to understand life, which you don't! And if you must know, Jesus CREATED catholocism! He created it! We are just following in his footsteps! I mean, look at Mother Theresa! She helped people ALL over the world, and SHE was a catholic! Well, goodbye AnyaMarcos, and remember! CHRISTIANS ARE NOT BAD PEOPEL! BUT PEOPLE LIKE ANYAMARCOS ARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 12th 2006

Every time you post, you prove me right about Christians, Timothy. Remember that.

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Oct 12th 2006

HPFANTimothy PLEASE STOP!! Your just look stupid! And Just because AnyaMarcos is not christan does NOT make him evil! And many christans are BAD PEOPLE!So dont go preaching to everyone here!

Posted by caffinated Oct 12th 2006

i think that a lot of people who aren't christians can often get bad ideas about it simply because of those who say they are christians and then like anyamarcos said, express so much hate towards others.Listen to this next bit carefully:People who express hate like that aren't abiding to christian teaching, saying you are a christian does not make you one, you have to be truly changed from the heart outwards by god who is the complete expression of love!I'm really sorry if people in your life have pushed you to have this opinion and like HPFANTimothy said i hope that, in time you come to understand the true meaning of christianity.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 12th 2006

Timothy has not done anything to change my mind about Christians. All he has done is confirmed that I am right to hate them.

Posted by cutupangel423 Oct 12th 2006

Ok.. 1st note. Not all christians are bad. 2nd who really cares what religion others are. 3rd as some have said before.. we should just be nice to her or were proving her shes right about harry potter.

Posted by duckers99 Oct 12th 2006

AnyaMarcos - what you're doing is judging all Christians based on a select few. its called "discrimination." its what starts racism and prejudice and hate. you're saying that you dont like Christians because of all the hate they show toward others, but all you're doing is showing hate toward them. yeah, Timothy is doing a really bad job of showing you that Christians can be good people, but you have to think - there's good and bad in every group of people in the world. there are good and bad Jews, there are good and bad Muslims, there are good and bad Americans, there are good and bad Brits. so ok, most of the Christians you see are bad people who just hate everyone who doesnt believe what they do - but that's not all Christians. once you've met every single Christian in the world, then you have a right to judge them as a whole.

Posted by NoteBookLove Oct 12th 2006

Why don't we get rid of Santa? What about My Little Pony? Let's get rid of Disney. They all have to do with magic or witches. Besides, isn't it a public school? It might not go against some religions. (Even though it doesn't go against Christianity...)

Posted by NoteBookLove Oct 12th 2006

AnyaMarcos, not all Christians are mean or anything like that. What if someone said that every (insert your religion(s) here or (unreligious people)) are stupid, stuck-up butts? Doesn't that seem a little unfair? That's like saying you hate all Africans, Hispanics, Whites, or Asians. You haven't even met everyone of that race or religion.

Posted by epsilonic Oct 13th 2006

The only Christians I've ever had a problem with are a) the ones who act like their lives have more meaning then the everyday agnostic (i.e., me) because they have a set of beliefs that I don't, and b) ones like this Mallory broad who thinks that just because she's a Christian, it gives her the right to determine what is "evil" and what isn't like she's the Universal Holy Judge or something. If she thinks the books are evil, fine. Me and my bisexual agnostic self are going to keep reading them because is it our irreparable right to do so. Kindly do not cut through the First Amendment because your beliefs are different then mine. Fortunately, I've met very few Christians like the aforementioned in my lifetime, and whenever I do, I tend to just smile and nod along, then complain about my girlfriend just for kicks :D

Well sorry poeple. =( It's not that I am being rude, I was actually being nice to Miss AnyaMarcos in the beginning, but she proved me right. She just kept on saying that she hated us Chrisitans for NO reason. Bagging me in this and bagging me in that, I told her that Chrisitans are good poeple and that most of them help people, but she would NOT listen. So I just got SO fed up with her that I practically blew my head off. You should understand Anya, that Chrisitans are not bad people. We may have people in Chrisitanity, that act in the wrong way and do bad things. But really, we are trying to help the world! And it's not only that, but you have to learn to respect all religions. I'm sorry that I got a bit irritating earlier, but I was just so annoyed. Please, don't hate us. We've done nothing wrong, so the Pope may be a tight-ass idiot. I agree that he's a loner, but that doesn't make us loners. I mean, at school, the teacher's never teach us to hate. They teach us to love and respect. To stand up for eachother and not do bad things, to learn about the Gospal. That's the true meaning of Catholocsim, and Chrisitanity. We're not a bunch of idiots who 'preach' Jesus Christ, we follow in him. We beleive in him, I to agree with you on some things. I actually feel that what the Catholic Church teaches is a bit far-fetched. And I have a friend at school who is a bit 'too' catholic, If you know what I mean lol. It's just that, I've been brought up a Catholic, I was baptized the month I was born. I made my Communion two years ago, and I'm about to make my Confirmation. Just don't hate us, please.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 13th 2006

Timothy I said I hate Christians because they claim to follow Jesus, but instead promote hate. And you responded with hate. So basically you proved that what I said was right. You said I was as bad as Hitler, that I was a bad person, that nobody would like me, etc. I said again, that I hate Christians becuse they preach hate, and again you responded with hate. I'm sorry, Timothy, but you haven't given any reason NOT to hate you. Do you think you've behaved like Jesus wants you to? If your teachers at school saw what you posted here, do you think they'd still let you be confirmed? You have a lot of work to do if you want anyone to think you're a real Christian, and not a phony like most of them. Right now I doubt anyone on this board believes you are a real Christian. Ask yourself if you would be willing to let your grnadmother read what you've posted. That will give you an idea as to whether or not your posts were Christlike. Like I said, Timothy, you have only shown how right I am to hate Christians. And I am not reading anything else you post, so don't further embarrass yourself and your fellow Christians with more blathering nonsense.

I wasn't going to comment on this topic again but certain comments by some of you have made me feel the need to put in "another two cents worth". Anya--you need to re-read my original post. I don't feel I was trashing you. It's just that when I saw your name, I thought back to that other time when the comments got disabled. I think all those who were reading this board at that time would agree with me that it was your attacks that got the comments disabled. F. Y. I....I'm neither a Christian nor a church-goer, so I don't have a problem with atheists. I don't really care what religion(if any) a person happens to follow. I just want these comments kept up and not disabled. Timothy--chill out, man! Your stuff is getting really rude, too. How do you know that "nobody likes" Anya? I just want to close with one last thought: how about we all stay on subject and skip the personal stuff? As I've said more than once now, I don't want to see these comments get disabled. I hope I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 13th 2006

Apologies, GrownUpChick, I jumped the gun. But whenever a news item involves religion, the thread usually gets shut down eventually, because religion is a very touchy subject. Even when I am not involved, those threads usually get shut down. So I thought it was unfair to blame me for it. If THIS thread gets shut down, it will most likely be Timothy's fault, as his posts have been far more offensive than mine. It all comes back to Christians believing they have the right to say whatever they want to.

Posted by GrownUpChick Oct 13th 2006

Anya--apology accepted. You're right; religion is a very touchy subject. That's why people should be careful when talking to folks that they don't know. As for Tim, I believe he's probably too young to understand diplomacy. Oh well, this topic is about to be archived soon, anyway.

Posted by cutupangel423 Oct 13th 2006

AnyaMarcos-I am Christian. Ok. But, I'm not one of those sons of a B------ that judge others.. Im a Bisexual But Hey in the end. It's what good stuff you do thats gonna get you into heaven.Jesus didnt judge others, so why should I? I do not agree with Timothy on how he approched the situation. He should have taken a second to stand in your shoes. I have plenty of friends that are Atheist, wiccan, and other belifs. The Christians make up a lot of the earth and a lot of them are not bad at all. The Hitler refrence was very rude of Tim. Hitler had mental problems and he blamed the Jews for it. I've read the Harry Potter books atleast 7 times and im not evil. If this woman wants the books banned then let her try.. HP is the best selling book in World, and Someone should recite the book from memory infront of her. I would laugh so hard. But Timothy Think about stuff before you judge others.

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 13th 2006

Oh very well. I'll apologize too, but why is everyone feeling sympathetic to Anya? On my first comment, I was polite to her. And then she just srated getting rude so I did too. I'm a nice person, but I am only defending my religion. AnyaMarcos has no right to hate Chrisitans. And we do not do the 'nasty' work of god Miss Marcos. We simply follow in him, like he wants us to do. I mean, what have Christians done wrong? Just because there's this stuck-up idiot woman saying that she loathes thr Harry Potter series... I mean, we're just Catholics. We do not hate, we love. And I was not being horrible, and I sincerely apologize for my Hitler remark at Anya. It's just that Hitler hated the Jews, and AnyaMarcos hates the Chrisitans. That's all, but Anya, it's not that you don't like Christians. It's just that you have to learn to respect ALL< religions. No matter what they are and how stupid they may seem, including Christianity. And we do not hate everyone, just because the Pope thinks that Harty Potter is 'evil.' You have tpo learn that, and we again, do not follow Jesus Christ as haters. Omg lol, what did you think? And cutupangel423 , I did research my facts. I know for a fact that you should NOT NOT hate Chrisitnas, you shopuld respect all religions.

The whole point of the appeals system is to allow people to come up with better evidence that is relevant and may make a difference, but the nitwit has not even bothered giving any additional information or tried reading the books since the last time. Hello, time to grow a brain already.

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 14th 2006

Anyway, the point is we do not preach Jesus Christ. And where did you get that idea from anyway? What bad things do we do, what horrible things have we done? Anya, you really need to read the bible (not that I ever have) but still. Christians love, not hate. No one should hate, it's a terrible thing to do. And for your information you have to learn to respect all religions. Do you have any idea how weird it feels living in a country where you have indigenous people who think that that a water rat was formed by a swan drowning a normal rat? That's what the Aborigines believe, and I think it is total nonsense. But I respect what they believe in, and I cannot judge them. I respect them, I respect their beliefs. Which is what you should be doing to Christians. And will everyone please stop bagging me and telling me to chill! I was only defending my religion, which is more than the other Christians on this board can do. Remember! Don't hate Christians! Btw, this year I went to Timor on a Jesuit Mission with my school. That's a good way of putting it that we help. In Timor, I helped people, kids I mean. I taught them how to write, how to play some games and sports. It was really fun, and I got that privilege, I was lucky. This was set up by my school, a Jesuit school (catholic) and it was a real lot of fun. I enjoyed helping people act. So you see, we Catholics help, not preach, not place evil on this world, we help, we love...
