Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

that horrible horrible HAG! that fugly whore.. if ANYONE's a witch, it's HER. go DIE u monster, everyone hates you

Posted by HPlover26 Oct 4th 2006

lets just ban every book in the entire universe because they all have something that someone disagrees with. magic fantasy anything that we are unsure of we want to ban because we are scared non-fiction is just about people and events so if the event is controverisal then ban that and if you don't like a person ban the book about them to the bible and anne frank couldn't even stay. NO!!! you can't please everyone all the time. let people read what they want. It shouldn't be up to the U.S. government to decide what people should read. let this go and let us find out what happens to harry and let j.k. rowling keep doing her job. she helps others and it got her off of welfare. she helps people that were like her b4 hp was popular. laura mallory just let this subject go and read what you wish and believe what you believe but let us do the same

I cant stand it when people are like that >_

While I largely agree with everyone defending Harry Potter, I do feel like maybe we're undermining our own case a bit here. I completely agree that this woman is misguided in attempting to ban Harry Potter. I suppose what I am bothered by is the tone of the reactions against her... I guess I am just really impressed with Dumbledore's consistent politeness and consideration for others even when they are rude to him... I mean, the man is even polite to people trying to kill him, let alone irritating gits like Umbridge and Fudge! I'm certainly not saying that Laura Mallory is right, only that I think that we would be more effective in undermining her efforts by showing unconditional respect like Dumbledore does. In the mean time, we can certainly disarm our opponents better by being able to reasonably discuss the matter like the civilized witches and wizards we are.

Posted by MargaretLouise Oct 4th 2006

while i agree with PhoenixDisciple, she's still a fugly girl

Posted by harryetmoi Oct 4th 2006

lol Drewen! WHat right does she have to affect what other people read! What bad had come out of hp? apart from some people being arrested for stealing copies and me getting distracted by muggnet when i am supposed to be doing homework!

Posted by smellysocks Oct 4th 2006

There are more important issues for her to question in this world, not about banning a book! she defo needs a night out on the town!

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Oct 4th 2006

Hang on...she's trying to squash imagination. Have any of you watched a young child see a butterfly for the first time in their life, or stood outside in the rain with their arms outstretched smiling? What about when a child is playing with a card-board box, which has miraculously turned into a castle with a twinkle of their eye. They are using their imagination...one of THE most important abilities a child has. Squash that, and they are left with nothing. Children have the right to be a child. Jo has given many children that opportunity (okay, I admit, us adults too) through her books. Who is this woman to take my childs imagination away? Or yours? Where does she have that right? Excuse me, but leave my childs imagination and mine alone. (As I go off playing with that cardboard box which has turned into a castle).

Does this parent stop her children from watching the news...or reading the papers... or listening to music.....or talking to others...? let the poor kids read the books!!

Posted by Aurora_Sailas Oct 4th 2006

Okay people, get it through your thick-skulls. Harry Potter is not evil, it is not designed to be evil, nor a handbook to witchcraft. It glorifies the value of friendship, loyalty, perserverance, and encourages many people to want to read. My sister was one of those who hated reading, like hated it with a passion. She came home one day, a few years after the series had started, and told my Mom and me in the car on the way home, a little about Harry Potter because her teacher was reading it to her in class. I'd never seen her that interested in any books before, the next thing I knew, we were standing in lines to get the books so yea, back off already on the whole, "This is causing our children to do evil things!" deal. The only thing that's causing kids to do bad things, is the way they were raised by their parents. So the true blame is the parents, so shape up and correct your mistakes already! Geeze!

Posted by psychoz Oct 4th 2006

This lady needs to get her facts straight, I have studied and practiced Wicca and what Wiccans do and what is in the world of Harry Potter are two different things. These books have made people who don't read, to read. She is your typical ignorant person who thinks they know what is better for us then we do.

Posted by flyersun Oct 4th 2006

She needs her head testing!!!

Posted by Magrathea Oct 4th 2006

THE REASONS FOR WHY THIS WOMAN DOES WHAT SHE DOES: ------------------ ------------------------- ------------------------- -------- *Why She Doesn't read the books - She can't read *Why she unfairly critisizes the books - She has NO life *Why she doesn't deserve to live - Shes almost a witch herself, just with one of the letters changed... ------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ---------------- Get this straight: I am 11 years old, and last time i read book 6, i'm sure i didn't march in a circle chanting voodoo along with my evil friends. WOMAN! GET IT TOGETHER, YOU ARE A ************************* !!! SHE MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL! URAGH! Thank you, now I am done. :)

Posted by london1075 Oct 4th 2006

Why are most of these crackpots from the US. Do other places in the world have them too? I'm just wondering. So if we ban HP, and anything with a referance with another religion or magic. Do we then ban the Torah or the Koran, any history books about the greeks asian roman culture and religion becuase they believed in magic. So whats next. These people need to stop worring about everyone elses kids, family whatever and worry about there own. If you dont what your kid to read the books....dont let them, thats what parents are suppose to do. Show some darn parental skill ya stupid prat.

Posted by soccerbabix101 Oct 4th 2006

omg what a fucken load of shhh, i hate it when ppl say these things ughhhh

Posted by stefan Oct 4th 2006

this lady is mental! her kids will never know the joys of hp

Posted by mischiefmanaged128 Oct 4th 2006

I bet SHE has a book in the works and just wants Harry Potter to be banned so her book has less competition. NOT HAPPENING!

Posted by littlemuggle Oct 4th 2006

unluckily, none of us is dumbledore, and i reckon that behaving like him is not that easy for simple muggles like us. but we can try. we must try. and of course she's a fugly girl

Posted by Wierdgirl5834 Oct 4th 2006

THIS WOMAN IS DRIVING ME NUTS!

Posted by Harrys_Ginny Oct 4th 2006

Wow, this woman needs some serious help! Really though...how about we just ban life now? Macbeth is one of Shakesperes great works of literature and Sleeping Beauty? Are you kidding me? What about cinderella? Beauty and the Beast? This is getting riddiculos. If anything they are promoting good over evil! How many times has she tried to argue this and how many times has she failed? GIVE UP! You are fighting a loosing battle. So disturbing? What about books about murders? And television shows, like CSI which show dead people who have body parts that have been mutillated. Which one is going to scar a child more? Personally, I find that much more disturbing than any Harry Potter book I've ever read.

Posted by crazy_ned Oct 4th 2006

Good grief, yet another idiot complaining about books she hasn't even read. And fyi, Laura: WITCHCRAFT ISN'T REAL!!!

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Oct 4th 2006

WHOA!!!!! soccerbabix!! All of us are a bit peeved about this woman, and we all handle things differently, however I do believe the usage of profanity is going over the line. Frankly, I'm shocked that Mugglenet allowed that word, but stared out (***) my usage of the word b-a-l-l. I do believe an apology is warranted - Professor Dumbledore would be most gracious if you did.

Posted by Fordprefectzaphod Oct 4th 2006

It's amazing that one person would devote so much time and effort to such a futile and ridiculous task while simultaneously making themselves look like an superstitious idiot. I read that she's trying to link this to the horror in the Amish school this week. Surely to God, she should be more concerned about crazy people with guns than children with books. I can't remember the last time anyone was murdered with a book.

Posted by MuggleTowne Oct 4th 2006

Yeah...this woman needs to report back to the insanity ward of the nearest hospital...maybe it is so serious, she needs to be sent to St. Mungo's...ah well, she's a lost cause...she really is psychotic though....but I have to say that my favorite part of this story is the "come back" that they attorney gave her..."under Mallory's reasoning school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty."...BAM! In Yo Face Biz*natch!

Posted by soccerbabix101 Oct 4th 2006

oh puh-leez. lol that was my cousin brittney, shes like 15 sooo....yea. sry bout that children.

Posted by stefan Oct 4th 2006

those poor children of hers will never get to read about hp

Posted by Mayefair Oct 4th 2006

Being a mother of 3, I would like to put my 2 cents in. I never post here but felt compelled to this time because I am SO sick of other people trying to tell me how to raise my children. If she doesn't want her kids to read it fine. But no one elected her savior of all our children. I personally have read every HP book out loud with my 11 year old son and can't wait for the next one. HP has given us something to bond over and lead us into many discussions over right and wrong, how to handle certain situations in school and with friends. In this day and age it is not always easy to bond with your kids or find meaningful ways to talk to them about this stuff all while keeping their attention. I also look forward to reading them to my 2 other kids when they are old enough. Ban them if they must, but my kids WILL NOT go without. Also I think she has pretty much guaranteed her kids will read them sooner or later. That just the way kids work.

Posted by ah14ofia Oct 4th 2006

ok ppl. my mother is a PASTOR and she's just as obsessed as i am!!! i'd bet everything i own that her children are secretly THE hugest hp fans on the planet just cuz their mom's some freakin wack job. i know I would be. actually i think we all need to thank this woman--- she's making millions of ppl out there read the series that never would have before just so they can understand why it's so "terrible" "Oh Harry, don't you see? If she could have done one thing to make absolutely sure that every single person in this school will read your interview, it was banning it!" - Hermione

Posted by Mrs_Julia_Grint Oct 4th 2006

O D that woman is crazy!!!!!!!! doesn't she have other better things to do with her life?

Posted by alhpfan1 Oct 4th 2006

This lady has lost it. I know some of the teachers that work in that county and they chalk it up to this. These books are like any other thing out there. (book, movies, music etc..) In the end its the parents that have to teach the children how to look at things. And for these books we can say they got kids to read, and thats something that can't been said to often.. This lady needs to let it go.

Posted by MuggleTowne Oct 4th 2006

ah14ofia...nice citation...like it...and when ever I decide to have kids, I will do the same with them! (i mean reading this to them and such...just in case you get confused)...well it is off to school...eech* Ü Nitey-Nite!

Posted by EloquentPhoenix Oct 4th 2006

*Commenting before comments get disabled* How dare she! Stupid stupid woman, she's evil! How dare she use the recent shootings that, even all the way across the Atlantic, have touched me and I have felt horror towards to her own benefits. Furthermore the shootings are completely and utterly incomparable to HP. Harry Potter never has and never will glorify a made-up magic! If Wicca is a recognised religion she has no right to brand it evil over her own. It's prejudiced and the biggest load of rubbish I have ever heard. She's got one thing right - HP is about good trying to triumph over evil - tell me how that promotes evil!

Posted by DarthWhitness Oct 4th 2006

That's awful that she used the tragedy of those school shootings as part of her argument of getting Harry Potter books banned from the school library. Just awful.

Posted by laxgirl101191 Oct 4th 2006

Ok people........this woman is obviously a crazed nut job......since when has Jo's books been about the Devil.......good always wins in her books.......(sighs at the crazyness of others)

Posted by soccerbabix101 Oct 4th 2006

i kno rite?? omg!!! that is soo gosh darn mean

Posted by laxgirl101191 Oct 4th 2006

I cant beleive she would stoop so low to mention the school shootings........cruel, crazy......wrong......... ...........need i say more?

Posted by candy17 Oct 4th 2006

omg...she didn't even read the books!!!! She probably just read the back of each book and claimed she read "some" of it....

Posted by anitaFELTON Oct 4th 2006

crazy people...i tell yah. anyone else think she's just jealous of J.K. Rowling? :) haha

Posted by pigwidgeon Oct 4th 2006

i hate it when adults think kids are completely stupid. we're not seriously going to believe the harry potter books are real. and i think it's really sad that a lot of people lose their imaginative mind at such an early age. without a good imagination, there would be no books and no artwork. and everyone would get depressed.

Posted by arther7 Oct 4th 2006

Not her again!!!!!!! Geeeze, some people these days are just trying to ban just about everything. Is she really trying to ban sleeping beauty???? What the!!!!!!

Posted by xxcrazedpotterfanxx Oct 4th 2006

absolutely ridiculous.....Harry Potter doesnt promote evilness it shows how good triumphs evil maybe she should acutually read the whole book before making these types of claims

Posted by mckenna Oct 4th 2006

This woman needs to give it a rest. *is currently finding a way to contact Gwinnet county...I'll speak for the harry potter community about this whole issue*

Posted by raychel10 Oct 4th 2006

omg.. this is crazy! these people seriously need to get over themselves.. it's not like harry and ron are teaching kids to burn down houses or kill small animals! geez... i'm a christian too and i see nothing wrong with reading harry potter.. banning da vinci code i get.. but harry potter? *faints* this is a huge case of "making something out of nothing!"..

Posted by Twiggy16 Oct 4th 2006

oh that terrible woman!!!!! stop reading farenheit 451 and get a life

Posted by Voldemort Oct 4th 2006

Who says that Wicca is evil, anyway? O_o Don't Wiccans promote kindness to nature? Doesn't seem very evil to me.

Posted by lemondrop89 Oct 4th 2006

geez...would this stupid woman give it up already? seriously, how can pass judgment on something you know NOTHING about? and still be taken seriously?! oh and my librarian at my old school had a button that said Everything I Need to Know About Life, I learned from a banned book. haha. isn't that great? We actually had some kids back in middle school that wanted them to remove the His Dark Materials trilogy and when the librarian refused they tried to steal the books. (and yes I'm a huge fan of that triology as well as HP)

Posted by polish Oct 4th 2006

hey Hannah_at_Hogwarts :) i agree with you. darn it

Posted by ba_ba_ba_ba_baloney Oct 4th 2006

i don't know wether to laugh or cry *sigh* There's not much for me to say that nobody has said already.....

Posted by hotterpotter2000 Oct 4th 2006

See? She admits Wicca is a religion, and banning a book based on a religion is against the constitution. Anyway, Harry Potter isn't even about any particular religion at all, it's just about life (which, in a way, is a religion unto its self). I feel sorry for our world, if it's the hands of people like this woman. I also feel sorry for her children, because of couse they'll grow up to be just as narrow minded as their mother and end up missing out on life because they can't see past the ends of their noses.

Posted by Dan_fan Oct 4th 2006

WILL YOU GIVE IT A REST!!!! SHE SHOULD HAVE JUST DROPPED IT WHEN THEY TOLD HER THEY WILL REMAIN ON THE SHELVE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! Harry Potter is something that kids like. And even is they do decide to take them off of school shelves, THEY WILL STILL BE IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES!!!! I also suggest that you read the books ALL THE WAY THROUGH!!!!! DONT SAY YOU DONT LIKE THEM WHEN YOU HAVENT READ THE INTIRE BOOK!!!! Kids love the Harry Potter books. But they will still be able to read them if they just go to the public library. SO THERE IS NO POINT!!!! DROP THE SUBJECT!!!
