Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

Ah. Complete and utter madness in the flesh. Eveyrone take a good look, you won't be able to see it that often. But really, she can't even be bothered to read the book fully and instead goes about screaming the profanities of evil which are supposedly in in. I see where your logic comes from Miss. Mallory.

Posted by MuggleMage Oct 4th 2006

I happen to remember that she originally said that she wouldn't read them because they're "too long". Ok lady, go home and continue on with your life. Stop being such an attention-seeker! You sound like you're 8 and you have no idea what you're talking about.

Posted by Gwendolyn Oct 4th 2006

She's never even read the books? Enough said. She's an ignorant moron that just wants to girl and moan about something. I do hope someone embarrassed her on the stand because her accusations are beyond ignorant it's almost laughable. I would love to have a discussion with her about the books... That certainly would be fun.

Posted by ba_ba_ba_ba_baloney Oct 4th 2006

feel sorry for her children....if my mom made a gigantic deal over a book everyone loved, I would crawl under a rock and DIE.

Posted by aguamenti1234 Oct 4th 2006

Honestly. She's acting as if on the middle page in these books, in BOLD Caps, it says JOIN WICCA!!! it's horrible for her to turn a nice fantasy book in to that. (Not anti-wicca or anything...). She hasn't even read them.....*confused*

Posted by xProfessorx Oct 4th 2006

I won't even bother ranting. But, I'd like all you I've-got-no-life-so-I'll- read-the-comments people that there are far worse things out there kids today are being exposed to. In my opinion, making all this fuss over a book that is adored by billions (YES, billions!) around the world is simply nonsense. I doubt Harry Potter will EVER be pulled off the shelves. Shouldn't we be worrying about protecting kids from rapists and serial killers, and all the violence that's presented to little children on television?! Siriusly! Now this lady comes and starts comparing Wicca to the books? Wicca happens to be an entirely different thing, yes, it is a religion, but has anyone ever spotted a mention of the word 'wicca' in the series? Has Jkr ever made it seem cynical and evil? No! Here's this lady worryed about some book that everyone seems to have no problem with, trying to ban it, when we really don't need anymore of that! I'd like to meet her kids and give them the first book for christmas or something, since this complete idiot seems to be all about protecting christianity or whatever. I'd like to see how they'd take it. Idiots.

Posted by tovarbaker Oct 4th 2006

um, Wicca guy. Christians aren't fans of Wiccans either, according to Christian theology (Jewish and Muslim also) divination is divination weather you call it something else doesn't change it, weather it openly "worships" the devil isn't the point. so unfortunately your argument is a little thin however, what narrow minded book banner lady fails to realize is the HP books aren't "teaching" witchcraft, one; because the spells aren't real, two because the stories are essentially fairy tales that teach Morales (in fact the Morales are so blatant in the HP book that it is hard to say that they are not in harmony with Christian teaching and theology) the problem as I see it is people get freaked out because the stories are modern and not set in a far away land or a far away time like Grimm fairy tales or LOTR or the Narnia Chronicles and if the freaky evangelicals were being consistent with their beliefs they would have jumped on the protest band wagon and spoke out against the overwhelmingly new age Star Wars decades ago. or they could do the smart and open minded thing and appreciate the stories for what they teach that is in alignment with what they do agree with and then teach their children the differences with the parts that they have a problem with

Posted by singer2b182 Oct 4th 2006

soooo, she basically doesn't want books in libraries that involve any recognized religion that isn't hers? yes, wiccan is a recognized religion. so is catholicism, christianity, judaism, islam, buddhism, hinduism, and a ton others... those ideas are getting through to the public through books too, *GASP*

Posted by Mea Oct 4th 2006

IDIOT. What a waste of time and public monies. Books shouldn't banned or burned. If you don't like them - don't read them.

Posted by Weazley_is_MY_King Oct 4th 2006

Uggghhh! This chick is really starting 2 drive me nuts! At first, I was super super mad, but now it's really just getting annoying. She'd better loose this case ( unless of course she had a death wish :P lol ) . . . . . . GRRRRR!

Posted by patty892 Oct 4th 2006

This lady is getting on my nerves, she has been fighting this for a very long time. I cant even believe that she made a refrence to the school shootings. She said that "we need to protect our children", but what she failed to see is that most of those shootings were made by grown men with disturbed mines. Not one of those murders said "I did it because I read Harry Potter". She therefore has no reason to even make a refrence to the shootings. I think Laura should go to one of those Appeals and read one of Ben's "Give me a butterbeer" segment. I really dont think that she is going to win this case. This is nothing like the "Hit Man" case, and she cant put the book off the shelves because they promote "evil". I could go on for hours about this lady, but im not. so that's all i have to say.

Posted by oofa Oct 4th 2006

This is getting out of hand.

Posted by trevorthetoad Oct 4th 2006

oh, get a life lady..................don 't you have something better to do than try to get in the news for trying to ban about the most popular book in the last couple of centuries????????

Posted by Rictemsempra Oct 4th 2006

hehe i like how the school's attorney mentioned macbeth..... right now my school is doing the play macbeth and i'm the first witch...... hehe so according to this woman from georgia i'm going to become evil and try to cast spells.... lol...... it's just a play and harry potter is just a book.....there are lots of books w/ "witches and sorceries" in them.... this woman needs to get a life or something

Posted by hermione214 Oct 4th 2006

Gosh, she is so ANNOYING! I bet her kid/kids doesn't/don't like her much because she/he/they probably look's/look like an idiot with a mom like that. And even if Wicca is a real religion, kids aren't gonna want to change religions just because of a book they read. Harry Potter has many Christian themes in it. They even celebrate Christmas and Easter. She is so ignorant and bossy.

Posted by heartnut Oct 4th 2006

The whole reason behind this is that she doesn't want to parent her children. If she tells her child not to read a book and they do anyway, it's HER problem. She should not presume to tell ME how to raise MY child. If I tell my child to leave something alone, they do it because they know that there are unpleasant consequences (for example: no playtime, no TV, no movies, no candy, no friends over, grounding, yard work, lines, etc... the list goes on!)Each person in the 'States has the freedom to raise their children the way they want. If I want my child to check out a HP book from a school library (it's on the AR/Accelerated Reading book list in my county, even!), then that is MY decision. Not hers. And I'm a staunch Southern Methodist.

Posted by polish Oct 4th 2006

i agree with ba_ba_ba_ba_baloney this time. i'd crawl under a rock and die. i feel sorry for her children.

YEAAAH SEND THAT girl BACK TO WHERE SHE CAME FORM!

Posted by Jackson Oct 4th 2006

She makes me sad to say I live in Gwinnett. I mean, this is the only reason most people know of Gwinnett anyways.

Posted by evilbutsexy Oct 4th 2006

I really hate people like this. Honestly. That's all i'm gonna say about it on here, but I'm gonna go whine to someone else about it now. Have a good day, all!

Posted by Nameless Oct 4th 2006

If we banned every book that offended someone, then every book in the world would be banned. Besides, Wicca is completely different from the magic seen in HP, or at least the little that I know about it is. And it's not like Wiccans go around firing spells at people. Gosh. What she needs to do is get over it. If she doesn't want her kids to read it, they don't have to read it. But everyone else should have the freedom to think for themselves.

Posted by The_Maltese_Fan Oct 4th 2006

All of this just shows how much free time this woman has, to use it trying to find a way of how to ban the HP books!! She would use it better if she TRIED to read the books and certainly realise that the books ARE NOT evil.

Posted by sugarquill Oct 4th 2006

come on, cant she give it a rest? i mean, she's not going to win, so why is she bothering? there are more harry potter lovers than harry potter haters, i think. so really, can someone just shove the books under her nose and make her read them? seriously. although i would LOVE to be a witch and go to Hogwarts (and i think i speak for everyone), i don't slave over witchcraft. i havent ever looked it up and studied it like i do hp, so really, she needs to get a grip.

Posted by Alohomorra Oct 4th 2006

Unfortunately, Mugglenet has misattributed the quote, "However, for the first time Mallory noted positive aspects of the HP series, stating..." It was actually the attourney Victoria Sweeny who recognized the good in HP. Let's be honest, though. It'd be entirely out of character for someone who is so deliberately ignorant to recognize that anything good could come from a source outside of her established religion.

Posted by Lithium Oct 4th 2006

Mmmkay, this woman needs to stop snorting whatever she's getting. It's obviously messing with her judgement. I'm a Christian, let's get that out there. And while I'm at it, I LOVE the books. I fail to see any harm in reading the books, or enjoying them. Otherwise we wouldn't have places like this, and I'd be a nerd (oh wait I already am). She really does have to read the books, that's the only real way to understand them. Sure Harry Potter has magic, otherwise it'd be boring. The magic is really not at the forefront of the theme. The theme is a KID trying to overcome the strange obstacles life has decided to throw at him, magic just happens to be the hook that gets your attention and the thing that often helps him get past it. Common Sense woman, I strongly reccomend she get some!!

Posted by vici1126 Oct 4th 2006

I am very offended by what she said connecting the school shootings and Harry Potter. Reading Harry Potter actually teaches about the horrors of murder and death, but without watering it down like most writers do. The books have NOTHING (and I mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!!!!!) to do with those school shootings. That REALLY offends me. It also offends me that she connects these books to worshipping the devil. I am a Catholic who goes to church every Sunday and goes to catechism every Wednesday. I go to my church to learn about God and Christ and the Bible twice a week, and I am totally obsessed with HP!!!!!!!!!! I don't understand this woman. She even contradicted herself. SHE HAS NO RIGHT TO DECIDE FOR EVERYONE ELSE WHAT THEY CAN AND CANNOT READ!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS NOT HER PLACE TO CONDEMN ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! This really irks me. Maybe it shouldn't be SPEW, it should be SPCHP (Society for the Promotion of Christianity in Harry Potter). I also agree that we should all go to http://www.m snbc.msn.com/id/15127464/ ?GT1=8618 to vote that Harry Potter is not evil. (We can all thank sxpnce for the link). ~Potter Purist and Christian Vici

Posted by Lydia_13 Oct 4th 2006

haha.. the whole subject makes me laugh. this prolly doesnt help the cause that HP isnt evil (cuz apparently im already going to hell for reading it...lol *jumps up and down* i cant wait!!!!) But if i were related to that woman, i would shoot her. honestly. you gotta be retarded to think that JKR thought of all of this just to turn a bunch of kids wiccan, i mean COME ON!! get a life, other then trying to ruin little kids fun! I bring my book to church and read it! they dont say anything to me!.... cept those few times... I started a huge argument about how HP is based off of The Chronicals of Narnia.. it was rather funny. :P but continuing, If people chose to turn Wiccan after reading Harry Potter, then let them. But i sincerely doubt that it was because of Harry Potter. I mean, when learning the Wiccan ways, its rather obvious that you cant do that stuff. like fly on brooms. Wicca isnt even bad, it celebrates nature, and the goddess's. and then thers Karma.. i wont even go there. It isnt witchcraft. But this woman obviously thinks that if your wiccan you are a witch and put spells on people and hurt them, again, Karma!! lol well im gonna stop rambling on and on. :P

Posted by delilah Oct 4th 2006

She appealed! She annoys me SO much. Since my county is right next to Gwinnett I hope these ideas spill over into our school system. I just don't know what she's gettign out of this. I'm sure her kids just like everybody elses know the difference from fiction and real-life. If she is going to try and ban something try banning something useful like violence. It affects her children more than Harry Potter ever will...

Posted by ski22 Oct 4th 2006

Okay, if there can be music that promotes being Nazi, and there can be propaganda posters saying that we should start a rebellion and overthrow the government, and there can be speeches that talk about being something else that isn't what average society thinks, then there can be some books that have witchcraft in them. But, Harry Potter doesn't have witchcraft, the religion in it(even though there's nothing wrong with those beliefs) so it should be fine. Now, saying that witchcraft is against Christianity and they should ban things that are, then why don't they go after characters that are Jewish? or Buddhists? or Islams?(sorry if I forgot your non-Christianity religion) Seriously, under the First Amendment it clearly states that we have FREEDOM OF SPEECH and FREEDOM OF RELIGION! JK Rowling isn't from the US, but she still has freedoms in Britain. It isn't a communist state(nothing against Second World Countries) and neither is America(HOME OF THE FREE) so banning it is like this woman trying to be Hitler. *I hope you praise this speech*

Posted by youknowwho_D69 Oct 4th 2006

And I bet she still hasn't read the books...

Posted by MuggleMage Oct 4th 2006

Okay Ms.Mallory, you can complain all you want but do NOT bring the school shootings into this. That was cowardly and desperate and made you seem so too.

Posted by Kaylad Oct 4th 2006

Geez that woman need to get over it. Harry Potter is fiction for heavens sake it is not real at all. I wish some people would see that.

Posted by KelseyRae Oct 4th 2006

Hey Laura! Sssh, we don't want you giving away our secrets. We are all evil witches afterall for reading HP... We already know we're going to Hell, don't rub it in :( She said HP has a parallel with the recent school shootings? Wow.

Posted by itsharrypotter Oct 4th 2006

She is so crazy. She hasn't read any of the books, so how can she judge them? And just because SHE doesn't like HP, doesn't mean she has to ruin it for everyone else.

Posted by muggleprefect Oct 4th 2006

hey at least we dont go to hell alone! i think more people wil go to hell than heaven if reading harry potter books makes you burn in hell...

Posted by crazy_ned Oct 4th 2006

She so crazy.

Posted by jlicon01 Oct 4th 2006

Ok, since there have been plenty of people trying to ban HP books from libraries, (HP was on the list for one of the most banned books-series) this shouldn't bother me. I know that there are plenty of people who have a problem with HP, and I don't have a problem with that. (it is nearly impossible to change someone's opinon) But the fact that Mallory brought up the recent school shootings really disturbed me. I really don't think that Harry Potter had ANYTHING to do with any school shootings. I think that the only reason that she brought up that, is because she wanted more sympathy for her plan, and to provide support for herself. (for an obviously failing venture)

Posted by lizzybennet Oct 4th 2006

Seriously....where does she keep her brain? Does she even know how much of an idiot she is? The Harry Potter books actually celebrate Christian holidays like Christmas. And what is more, I'm a Christian and I have never been drawn to "real" witchcraft after I read the books, (which by the way are fictional, meaning they're not real) and I have never been drawn to shoot anybody either. Honestly, this woman DOES make me wish I had a wand, then I could glue her tongue to the top of her mouth and the government could use our tax dollars for something that actually HELPS people...

Posted by halleedwards Oct 4th 2006

LAURA MALLORY'S READING LIST ------------------- -------------------- As made by me... Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Fahrenheit 451 At least know what you're criticizing.

Posted by muggleprefect Oct 4th 2006

Lol we can use the SILENCIO charm on that lady....maybe that'll make her moth shutup. i still cant belive that lady will think that i'll grab a wand and turn a blonde hair dude into a farret...*sigh* I wonder what she'll say abuot MAGICIANS, maybe she'll wanna ban magicians from circuses next??

Posted by KikiPotter Oct 4th 2006

Wiccas are not witches they are HEALERS!!! They use maturl remedies to heal. That is were the term "witch" came from!!! This bloody woman needs to get her facts straight! And I live in PA, USA and this shootings are older men and all sort of other stuff. WHAT THE HECK DOES HP GOTTA DO WITH THEM!!!!??????? I agree with hpstephanie, people has such closed minds......

Posted by vici1126 Oct 4th 2006

As I said earlier, I'm really offended by what she said concerning the school shootings. I also do not care to be called evil. I do not care to have my favorite books criticized and spit upon for doing the one thing that no other books could do: bring modern children back to reading. It's kinda a little sorta like what happened with Jesus. Some people loved him and believed in his goodness, and then others spat on him, condemned him, and said he was evil. They eventually crucified him. But, that's what God wanted. After being crucified, Jesus rose from the dead to save us from our sins. I'm not completely comparing the two things because (as Chriatinas) we belive Jesus' resurection to be a VERY HOLY THING, but it's kind of a rough comparison (like comparing Umbrige to Voldy in their evil, tortorus ways. Not too good of a comparison, though you get the picture). I'm just saying.

Posted by StrangeButCool Oct 4th 2006

My God, this lady's slow. Doesn't she realize that if she wins, the majority of the kids in that school are gonna hate her? Everybody ALREADY hates her. She needs to GIVE IT UP!!!!!!!!! Hp rocks, that ain't changin', hun.
