Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

*Sings* Here we go loopy loo, here we go loopy lie....*hums inananely to self*. BORING!!!!!!! Mrs M - get off your stuck record and find something else to occupy your exceedingly narrow little mind. *rolls eyes, huffs and puffs, grinds teeth* Yes, I am getting nasty now - I've tried being reasonable, but it hasn't woked in this instance, so out with the old and in with the new - she should probably take a leaf out of my book- non-HP of course! NOT!!!!! and "despicable images of unicorns" .... riiiiiiiight! I was always under the impretion that unicorns were beautiful, sweet creatures? I guess I was wrong. Apparently they are "despicable". *rolls eyes*"Guys, Mrs Mallory isn't trying to ban HP from everywhere, just her local school library. She is already on a losing wicket anyway, and she would be apparently an even bigger fool if she thought she could ban the publishers from printing the books and selling them: that really would be an infringement of free speech. I am amazed that To Kill a Mocking Bird was banned, although I can understand that certain elements of society (i.e. abject racists - people I have ABSOLUTELY no time for...) might find it unpalatable - more fool them!

This absolutly drives me insane, nearly 300 years ago the US fought for freedom of speech and seperation between church and state, yet 300 years later, we still are fighting, only with our own citizens. Jo owns all the right to write whatever she wants, we own the choice to read them. Frankly, coming from a Jewish perspective, I am sick and tired of people telling us what to do. Banning--or trying--Harry Potter will only create more publicity and more people will buy and read the books. Jo said it in the fifth book, "If she could have done one thing to make absolutely sure that every single person in this school will read your interview, it was banning it!" (*Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, Rowling, 582). In fact, if she is going to ban Harry Potter, than Mallory should go ahead and ban Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Spongebob, The Diary of Anne Frank, and more. It is an absurd way to protect her children and an absurd way to taint her name. Congress has crossed over the church/state line just too many times.

How the HELL do the school shootings have anything to do with the Hp series? NOTHING!!!! this lady is just wasting her time...cause she doesn't have a life & thinks that trying to get rid of harry will keep her busy...LOL!

Posted by Loony Oct 4th 2006

I don't want the issue to be put to rest! she's amusing!

Posted by TheOtherMinister Oct 4th 2006

HOW DARE SHE even compare something like fantasy witchcraft to a REAL TRAGEDY?!!! I'm almost shaking with anger! I can't believe anyone would say that Harry Potter is evil along the same lines as real gun shootings!!! And one more thing: If she's gonna argue against the Harry Potter books, she should at least read them and see what they're really about, because they promote lots of good themes!

Posted by stargirl3198 Oct 4th 2006

Can I make a request? Please stop posting these kinds of things about people who dont like HP. Its driving me nuts. It's their problem, not ours!! I want something about what's going on in the world about Harry Potter and Jk Rowling's site. I really dont get the point of this kind of crap. Hey, no offense Ciaran. I enjoy the way you write and all but topics like these just doesnt have any effect so what's the point of posting them? Besides, that crazy woman's gonna lose...so if you want to write about it, just tell us that she lost. thats all. but anyways, i want something else and not this kind of crap.

Posted by Cookieprincess13 Oct 4th 2006

::curses incoherently:: I can't even start. Stories like this get me so mad. I wrote an essay on idiots like her in high school a few years ago. My best information that I found while researching was that Wiccans say that the witchcraft in the Harry Potter series has NOTHING to do with their religion, and they're happy that Harry Potter is portraying witches in a positive way, instead of what you see, for example, on Halloween. ARGG

Posted by Roanne Oct 4th 2006

Excuse my behavior, but I want to shoot that woman. I've heard enough from her and that other pope guy connecting Harry Potter to Satanism.

Posted by Chitra Oct 4th 2006

Why on Earth would someone wish to make a fool of themselves...again?

Posted by Patronus Oct 4th 2006

Yeah... she should read them first... when i was about 10, my parents heard about this Harry Potter craze, and heard that they were "evil", and so they tried reading them to see if the rumors were true. my parents LOVED the books, and even encouraged me to read them. it actually has christian allegories in it, and has been used to teach sunday school.

Posted by padfootisnotdead Oct 4th 2006

I AM SSOO ASHAMED TO LIVE IN THE SAME STATE AS THIS WOMAN!! WILL SHE LET IT GO!! I think it's time for another "Give-Me-a-Butterbeer!!", Ben!!

Posted by WickedSmile Oct 4th 2006

This woman needs to lighten up. If she doesn't want her kids to read the books then she should tell them not too. The fact that she's trying to get them out of the school completely just shows that she can't trust her own kids to stay away from them. Ignorant woman...

Posted by Saki Oct 4th 2006

Misguided though this woman's opinions are, I do respect her courage in standing up for what she believes is right. "Censorship! Censorship!" you all scream, and of course, you're right. But this woman is fighting for a very unpopular cause and has little chance of success. If I believed that the Harry Potter books were harmful to children, I hope that I would be brave enough to try to get the books removed. Consider. Suppose the books in question were not Harry Potter books, but were pornographic manuals that featured adults having sex with little children. Would it not seem to you that the only moral thing to do would be to get the books removed from library shelves? In such a case, I would not hesitate to advocate censorship of such filth. Now, of course, the Harry Potter books are not filth. They contain--I hate to say "morality lessons," but at any rate they explore questions of good and evil in what I believe to be a morally sound fashion. The woman is wrong to insist that they be removed--but I reserve some admiration for actions nonetheless.

Wow. Um...okay! I think SOMEBODY needs a hobby... *Brandishes wand* No, I'm just kidding. Wow. CRAAA AAAZY...

Posted by Dumbledalf Oct 4th 2006

a) The Harry Potter books are not ABOUT Witchcraft. Magic is simply a major plot device in this incredible mystery/adventure series. b) Wicca is a religion (Mallory says so herself), just as Christianity is and, regardless of whether it's true or evil, deserves the same rights and freedoms as Christianity (one of the basic ideas of American democracy). If someone was to burn C.S. Lewis books because they were about Christianity (which, unlike the Harry Potter books being about Wicca, they actually are) would Mallory not (I'm assuming she reads C.S.Lewis) complain using the same argument I set above? c) Mallory said that the books do have many positive points, such as the battle between good and evil, etc. If the powers of these characters comes from Satan (which they don't, because it's a book), how is it that they could do good things with them? What exactly is "magic" anyway? In the Bible, I'm pretty sure that Moses proves to the Egyptian Priests that the "magic" of the Hebrew god is more powerful then the magic of their god (correct me if I'm wrong). This isn't considered evil.

Posted by theladycarmilla Oct 4th 2006

I personally am Wiccan, and I was before ever reading the Harry Potter books. There is no references what so ever to any religious practice other than Christian (with Christmas break being given off) in the books. If JKR was trying to push Wicca into the books, there would be no Christmas (Yule instead) and Hallowe'en would be called Samhain, and would be treated rather differently. Also, it's rather insulting to have one's religion treated as if it were the end of the world and dangerous- posionous. The more that misinformed extremist keep their prejudice to themselves, the better.

Posted by MelanieV Oct 4th 2006

Wouldn't it be great if Jo called this woman and politely asked her to explain her problem with Harry Potter? That's what I would do.

Posted by No_Idea_Why_I_Smile Oct 4th 2006

that stupid person...if people were gonna be wicca, they wouldnt need the book to push them along.... that is such a stupid b****...oh lord...i just...urgh... Everyon e knows that HP is not Satin's book...the main character is on the side of the good, for God's sake... and honestly... urgh...... i dont like that person...she needs to leave it alone...she is never going to win...and there are TOO many HP fans out there for her to win...next thing we know..she'll be trying to ban it from all of the US...tehn shell go onto the world... there are worse books out there...urgh...stupid...* * a few choice words here **

Posted by SnapeCake7889 Oct 4th 2006

HELLO! Wicca is not even the same thing as it is in HP. Wicca is all about loving nature and stuff. It is not the same kind of witchcraft and HP is not bad on any levels. I do not understand how people can think that, and I think they should get off the drugs they are on, shut their mouths, and if you don't like it , DON'T READ IT. Gah.

Posted by hlconley Oct 4th 2006

Right now, I am mortified to be a resident of Metro Atlanta. Though not in Gwinnett, I live close enough to cringe when reading this article. This woman is completely ignorant.

Posted by chocolatemoose Oct 4th 2006

I would be so horrified if that were my mother. Luckily mine really likes the books, not nearly as much as I do though.

Posted by No_Idea_Why_I_Smile Oct 4th 2006

oh...and who bloody cares what religion people are...like said by hlconely...i live in TN and im emarassed to be even close to Atlanta....im embarassed by her...maybe we should go and make her read the book...make her see that its not about evilness...its a good plot...gawd almighty...i say we storm atlanta and mess with her...then she'll see what happens when she pisses off HP fans...c'mon...we are devoted...and she is trying to mess up our fandom....i dont like her...and i am past the point of knowing what it is that i am saying...lol...

Posted by pygmypuff811 Oct 4th 2006

To add to my comment... Honestly, if this woman has a problem with people being...scarred, or whatever she thinks will happen, than she can explain her rules to her own kids not a whole city. Oy Vey!

Posted by klarity Oct 4th 2006

i wonder if she's read 'the crucible'...she sounds exactly like danforth to me.

Posted by samwise_potter Oct 4th 2006

It' this simple: if she is opposed to the books, she shouldnt' let her kids read them. Her antiquated views should not be imposed upon the community at large.

Posted by jens Oct 4th 2006

to stargirl3198---- ive been thinking about what you said and i agree.. all it does is rile the fans up when we hear such nonsense about the books that we love. this site is a fan site and should be used as one. i personally dont give a crap what this woman thinks, and i also think that attention is the key here. this woman wants attention... and guess what we are doing!!! GIVING THIS RIDICULOUS SUBJECT OUR ATTENTION. well....not me.. not anymore. im outta here. for me this matter is closed! i hope mugglenet takes your advice stargirl3198, because no news is better than this crap.(so eloquently put).... "It's appalling that we want our children in the post-Columbine era where we've seen repeats this week of school shootings that we don't want to remove evil from our schools. You would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools," argued Mallory. How dare her! I am a parent of students in the school systems, and I am the one appalled that she would even give the past weeks events a label of post-Columbine, if she was a she claims to be first she learn how to read which seems to be a lacking quality she posses. The events were the works of unstabled ADULTS! I am a HP fan but Iam also a mother and a grandmother who is griveing from the lost of unstarted life at the hands of people such as this woman who has issues about a child learning to have loyal friends, be they giants or classmates (a refer to parent figure and siblings) or how to overcome the harshes of obsticals, while still knowing yourself and building on your inner strenghts without changing who you are, about lerning about lifes ups and downs before they are knocking down your door. I know there are books out there that teach the same morals without the fantasy aspect but how man children would read them> Sorry for long comment, but if this woman want to help a child just one she would read what ever she got her hands on to him or her and explain how the story is fiction, but from what I've read thus far she has not a clue to the definition.A book to me is a free trip, I or you can go and come back as many times as I like and you can choose your own destination! I'd like to know if she would not allow her child to vist Alice in Wonderland, because there is a MadHatter there, orover to Dr Suess house, cause there is a Grinch, or by Sesame Street because there is a crouch there, too...to an adult who has lost thier kindren spirit these all seem evil, but to a child and an adult with the child still within, these are learning tools that helped us thus fa...

Posted by potter4president Oct 4th 2006

there is one word to describe this...but I don't think it is very polite.

Posted by MagicalMuse Oct 4th 2006

The book is fiction. FICTION. As in NOT real and most people realize that fact, but she is obviously an acception. School shootings? Has there ever even been a gun mentioned in any of the books at all?!?! Because if so I don't remember it.

Posted by Caria Oct 4th 2006

I am from Gwinnett county. Georgia, and I would just like everyone to know that not everyone in Georgia is insane like this woman. I HATE how people assume that something is wrong or "evil", but never take the opportunity to learn all the facts and information. How can you claim that Harry Potter books are evil and wiccan if you have never read one? People are crazy, and yes, Gwinnett county breeds some craziness, but most of us are normal! Just thought I would clear the air! Thanks!

Posted by rachelhp1829 Oct 4th 2006

to stargirl3198...what are you talking about? this site is for people who love Harry Potter. if someone is taking up a court case against something I love I would want to hear about it. I know we will hear the answer here but they're not making a decison till December! (though i dont know why it would take that long to tell Mallory she's wrong.) Its also awesome to hear people say exactly what you are feeling, and its good to just rant sometimes... And whats with her making points against herself, "for the first time Mallory noted positive aspects of the HP series, stating: 'The major themes are good versus evil, overcoming adversity, loyalty, friendship and courage.'"?! yeah, HP should be banned for showing good beating evil. This just makes me want to read all the books again. Sadly I have that thing called school.

Posted by rachelhp1829 Oct 4th 2006

Not to burst your bubble MagicalMuse 1, but guns are mentioned in Book 3, when Sirius Black is described as carrying one to the muggles so they know that Black’s dangerous.

Posted by radical_dreamer Oct 4th 2006

This son of a B%#@* I tried being nice with her, but she's just taking it too far. Is it mabe that she's the witch? Someone's been a little TOO tipsy if you know what I mean. ^__^ If they tried get riddding of HP in Fresno, oh boy are they going down.

Posted by coolnamestaken Oct 4th 2006

Potter books- my anti drug, without them there would be very few things to look foward to and my friends and I would be consumed with even more videogames

Posted by totallytexan Oct 4th 2006

Upcoming headline: HARRY POTTER CAUSES SCHOOL SHOOTINGS!!!! Pul-lease. With everything else going on in the world, Mrs. Mallory chooses to pick on Harry Potter? I hardly think the HP books would drive anyone towards violence. There are much worse things on TV, in movies, and even in real life from which psychos can draw their inspiration. If she really read the books, she would see the only religious connotations in them point toward Christian values and imagery. She should realize that fantasy and magic are a normal part of children's literature, and JKR has woven a story so great that it attracts adult audiences as well.

Posted by mysduende Oct 4th 2006

Fictional witchcraft and Wicca are like apples to oranges. Jaysus, honey, get your facts straight and do some research.

Posted by longmontgoalie31 Oct 4th 2006

This lady really made me laugh! oh it promotes witch craft... more like oh you mouth promotes B.S.! and not to mention the fact that she didnt even read the whole book... i wonder what her kids must think...

Posted by coolerin Oct 4th 2006

how rediculous, it's really depressing to know that there are people who are so ignorant and closed minded out there. And it was mentioned before but religion should not be brought into schools, if she wants to hate HP in a cathedral then whatever but how dare she stomp into a school, try and force her beliefs on other kids, talk down on a religion she knows nothing about, then try and relate harry potter to a horrible tragedy. And the best part is that she didn't even finish the book.

Posted by Bijoux Oct 4th 2006

It's kinda funny... by this insular woman trying to ban the books, she is doing the exact opposite of what she intends to do... by attempting to ban a book people will begin to wonder what all the hub bub is about and they'll read the book... this allows more people to be exposed to the book... gotta love legistics... people are so stupid....

Posted by jadefrog11 Oct 4th 2006

Wow. I love ignorant people. And by love I mean I want to punch them in the face. A) The spells used in the books aren't REAL! B) It's FICTION! Say it with me.....Fic-tion. Good job!

Posted by expectogirl Oct 4th 2006

This women doesn't even know anything about the Wiccan religion she opposes so adamently! Harry Potter doesn't follow that relgion or any other religion as far as I can tell! But HP is spriitual in that it promotes doing what is right, protecting others, showing loyalty and bravery...I could go on and on! I wish they would hurry up and end this silliness she has caused!
