Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.
Apparently she finds the books so disturbing she says she's never completely read any of them. But surely that's a necessity in order to dub them 'evil.'

Additionally, in an effort to strengthen her argument, she referenced the past week's school shootings, saying that "you would think that we would want to do everything we can to get any form of evil out of our schools now."

The board is expected to make a decision in December. Let's hope they finally put this issue to rest.

I am sorry but blaming school violence on Harry Potter, are you kidding me. Next time school violence happens because somebody casts a spell or uses a wand as a weapon please feel free to ban it, but until then get rid of history books, I hear there is violence in those too!

Do stupid people ever give up?

Posted by princesshermione Oct 5th 2006

I cannot understand {& I am a parent} how someone who has never read a book can call it evil. If someone has a problem with the books then fine, but at least read them and then form a decision. Good grief, give it up already!

Posted by Quidditch_Queen Oct 5th 2006

SOOO, lets ban Narnia and Lord of the Rings because they have witchcraft in them too. Oh wait, they are ok because the authors were self-proclaimed Christians. It's cooky people like this that give us Christians a bad name. People see weirdos like this woman and think all of us Christians are like her. Nevermind all the positive aspects of this book, and the fact that it deals with many Christian themes as well. How can someone that has not read any of the books to their entirity declare them evil. Maybe she's just too stupid to be able to read them so they must be evil. LOL, seriously people need to get a life and worry about some real problems like reading abilities of children in their schools. Of course, weirdos like this woman are trying to take all the interesting and well written books out of schools so there is nothing left for them to read. No wonder so many kids in schools across the nation have such poor reading ability. A book that actually pulls kids away from the TV and gets them reading again... it must be evil!

Posted by harry_p_7 Oct 5th 2006

any one who said this ladies an absolute idiot i totally agree with them! i mean, c'mon! i bet you half the kids in the world ACTUALLY got into books until these books like narnia, lord of the rings and best of all harry potter came out and finally got kids picking up books and reading them befor throwing them aside. this ladie must be jealous that during HER time she didnt have such great author and books, and so she gets revenge on us all! she really needs to get her nose out of harry potter, take a pack of chill pills and get a LIFE!

Posted by morrineandjoel Oct 5th 2006

Does she not understand that there is a seperation of church and state? That just because it doesn't go well with what you believe in doesn't mean it should be with held from others? That maybe, just maybe, if you haven't read the book to begin with you really shouldn't be voicing your opinon when you don't REALLY know what you are arguing against? That if you DO NOT LIKE IT THEN JUST DON'T READ IT! Just because you don't like it it does not make you the person to say that everyone else shouldn't like it either and shouldn't have a chance to experince it. There is this little thing in America called F-R-E-E-D-O-M and that applys to what kind of books you read. If you want to be in a country or society that REALLY will ban you from reading certain books then you can take yourself to a communist country where they will be happy to ban and keep others from reading that book. But this is America, and you can't keep everyone from reading a book.

OMG EMMA WATSON HAS A BOYFRIEND! They are really wierd pics, Emma said in that interview that she doesn't have a 'special someone,' well, she OBVIOUSLY does now! Just follow these instructions: Go to, www.google.com and then click on 'images.' Type in 'Emma Watson' and the go to Page 5. Scroll down and you will see a picture of Emma in a group of 4 (Emma, 2 boys and a girl) under the website of 'www.emmawatsonla.com.' Click on the image and it will take you to a page called 'EWLA' where you will see a picture of Emma drinking a beer. Scroll down and you will see a horizontal list of mini-pics. Click on the end pic (same as the one on Google images) and then you will see another line of pics, also mini-pics. After the pic with the Emma surrounded by a group of friends, you will see her in a pic with another guy in a court-yard. Hugging. I'm guessing that this is her boyfriend, although I have no idea. Oh, and ig you cannot find the image on Google Images, it is under the sub-heading of 'normal_emma-watson-3.jpg .' So, she LIED!

this woman seriously needs a phycologist. i imean she has no strong support and reasoning at all.does she think children of today's generation are absolute nutters and that they cannot differentiate between fiction and real world. firstfall, h.p does not promote evil IT PROMOTES LOVE, STAMPING THE EVIL. AND IF SHE IS TRYING TO BAN H.P IT IS THIS LADY WHO IS PROMOTING EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by baleleng Oct 5th 2006

i doubt if the shooters have read harry potter... all i know is that they used guns... not spells...

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 5th 2006

Well, I TOTALLY disagree with this woman... but I wouldn't call her a nutter. I mean, I'm not a person who looks at something that everyone is rebutting to, and then thinks 'Oh well, she's definitely wrong,' I am a person that respects EVERYONE'S opinions. No matter how crazy they are. I'm a catholic, and I am really quite offended by some people saying that we're weird. We're not, we are just another religion. And I am SO sick and tired of racism, sexism and people who are biased. Unfortunately, my parents are EXTREMELY biased and sexist. They say that they aren’t but they obviously are. I’m happy that they are not racist though, I think I’d cry of utter sadness. I can’t stand this world, everybody hates everybody, everyone kills everyone, and the one person who is in charge of the world is a COMPLETE bone head… George W. Bush. Who seems to have this idea in his mind that the War in Iraq will be resolved by sending more troops in. Upsetting everyone, and then Tony Blaire and John Howard just tag along… and then we get to this woman. Again, I disagree with her 100%, but everyone! It is her opinion, and if she wants to express it, let her.

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 5th 2006

Sorry, I kind of went over the top there. But you get the picture; just let people express their opinions... Don't blame them at first glance. I'm sure she has her reasons why she wants my favourite books in the world taken off of the shelves, but unfortunately, she's a human being. And I'm sure she's very very strong about the topic. I mean, put it in her view. Mallory: 'Harry Potter teaches witchcraft and sorcery to our kids everyday! It's pure evil!' Myself: 'Harry Potter is a brilliant series. Sure, it MAY show signs of magic, witchcraft and sorcery on every page. But children wouldn't believe it! And J.K. Rowling has INSPIRED so many children in this world onto reading! Just by writing these fabulous books!' See? Different opinions. No matter how different they are, you've just got to respect everyone's beliefs and opinions.

Posted by HPFANTimothy Oct 5th 2006

And yes, as ba_ba_ba_ba_baloney once said on a comment somewhere on this board. If I were one of this woman's kids, I would also crawl under a rock and die lol!

Posted by HermyG_1300 Oct 5th 2006

I simply cannot handle or tolerate this woman. It makes me ashamed that people like that exist in my state. If reading and being excited about books is evil, then we're all guilty, sorry lady. The ignorance to which she approaches her baseless claims is also ridiculous.

Posted by double_trouble Oct 5th 2006

hmm... I don't have much to say except all I can do is roll my eyes at this woman....she needs to get over it all...

Posted by Aldaron Oct 5th 2006

all i'm gonna say is that i go to school near there and we were talking about this in Psych, if she doesnt want her kids to read it, either homeschool them or put them into a Christian private school, or regular one for that matter, there are plenty of them for her to choose from

Posted by asraiSOA Oct 5th 2006

Boy-o-boy, someone does have some serious insecurity issues with their religion, don't they? Mallory, your lame 15 minutes are up -- now just do everyone a favor and crawl back under the rock from whence you came.

Posted by Lucas Oct 5th 2006

I agree Purplearcher07 but I went to a christian private school and the books were still there.

My friend Laura says " I don't see why so many people are obsessing ove this woman. Okay she did a pretty mean thing, but you klot gotta start listening to music and stop reading books! I suggest bands such as Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, Hawthorne Heights and more emo bands like that. Anyhoo, bubbi!" I, on the other hand, think that we are right to obsess about this woman unfounded vendetta again the HP books. Once, Laura Mallory has been laughed at again; she wil give up but not after becomeing a laughing stock and an embaressment to her children. she wants to protect them but she is doing it the wrong way. Muggle_1993's friend says " HP books are good but music is better. However, If oyu dont enjoy music, you should try skateboarding, you do hurt yourself a lot, but its fun. I don't mean that its fun to hurt yourself, as it isnt believe me. I gave up. ANyhoo Bye x Laura is annoyed that she shares a name with Laura Mallory Thanks for reading

Posted by herotomy2sons Oct 5th 2006

As an Ordained Minister I had an obligation to read the Harry Potter series in order to advise my congregation as to whether or not the content was really suitable for Christian children. After reading the books and doing a professional theological survey I told my congregation that the Harry Potter series tries to teach the same values that I do from the pulpit i.e., faithfulness. Though careful to keep religious symbols and verbage to a minimum in order to make her books acceptable to readers of all faiths and nations, I concluded that since Harry Potter was "christened" at birth, his parents James and Lily Potter were practicing Chrisitians and you cannot punish Harry Potter himself for being brought up in the non-Chrisitan home of the Dursleys, anymore than you could blame Harry Potter for the circumstance of his birth; he was born a wizard, is that really any different than being born with a medical condition? Harry is who he is just as each one of us are and to blame someone for being who they are is racism, so we don't do that. To me, Harry Potter represents more than a story about good vs. evil, he is the modern representation of a Christian without a church. Though Rowling doesn't say so explicitly, there is enough Christian symbolism in the story to indicate that Harry considers himself to be a Christian, but is unable to fully grasp the significance of his faith because he has no real religious training - not unlike millions of unchurched Christian people today. Realizing that I could use the lessons in Harry Potter's story to teach people about faith in God, I not only recommended these books to my congregation, I read them to my two sons.

Posted by theREALginny88 Oct 5th 2006

GRRRR! I can't believe this woman, how could she draw lines between Wicca and Harry Potter? If she read any parts of the books she would realize that Harry celebrates Christmas, Easter Brake, Valentines Day..... I am sure that all of those holidays are evil. Harry Potter has brought so many people together and has taught us so many good things and for someone to come and say that Harry is EVIL is just a disgrace and I feel ashmend to call her an american. And by the way Harry Potter can now be blamed for school shootings on top of causing over weight kids and encourageing blood scarfice.

Posted by GinnyInTheStars Oct 5th 2006

I think the thing that disturbs me the most about all this, is this woman blaming school shootings on HP. You know most of those people that did that had a bad childhood (abuse ect.) In the series Harry himself has a bad home life but you don't see him going around and killing everyone! He makes the most of what he has and lives up to his parents NOT the Dursley's. He could careless about them but you know what...I bet if something was to happen to them he would be there to help.(Dudley Demented for example he could just as easily let Dudely die but instead he stepped up and put his life on the line and saved him) I get so angry at these people that just grasp hold of something without researching it or giving it a chance. They just take hold of what they're preist or minister or whatever says and runs with it. I'm not saying don't listen but what I am saying is sometimes even religious figures need to be challenged. I do I work with a minister and while I may not have gotten him to read the books I've got him interested enough to watch the movies. He used to tell me all the time that I was going to hell for reading HP and one day I got really angry at him and looked him straight int he eye and said "Judge not lest ye be judged!" I went to walk away and he called me back and asked me to explain the books and why I thought they weren't evil. I did and he doesn't give me a hard time about it anymore. HOnestly if this woman is soo determined NOT to have her kids read the books then it's her responisbility to instill that in them. It's not however her responsibility to try and instill HER BELIEFS upon everyone else.

Posted by theREALginny88 Oct 5th 2006

it is our choices harry that show what we truely are far more than our abilities. and she is choosing to make an ignorant idiot of herself! Separate church and state and stop creating more insignificant issues when we have bigger problems like terrorism and fighting voldy!!!!!! If you dont like the school system then remove your children. I cant stant anyone who tries to surpress their beliefs on to other people. My two best friends are catholic and LOVE harry potter, and I am jewish and Love harry. Although we are all opinionated on our beliefs we believe commonly that this woman is off her rocker.

Posted by Munchkin Oct 5th 2006

Yes Wicca does exist. But she does know that they don't go around brandishing a wand and shouting spells at people or make things wash themselves or regrow bones right? Maybe she should research the practice and read the HP books before making a fool of herself. IT'S MAKE BELIEVE. Try reading lady and you'll find out that JKR MAKES UP THE WORDS HERSELF. It's not fact, she doesn't go to a wiccan place of practice and say alright guys, start throwing out your terms for me so I know to get all the words in my book right. Man do I feel sorry for her kids. I would change my name and flee the country if I were them. Grrrrrrrr to stupid people like her. Holy Hippogriff lady, get a life.

Posted by MuggleTowne Oct 5th 2006

I CONCUR! Ü

Posted by Xindaeltal Oct 5th 2006

*LOUD SNAP* Sorry, haven't learned to apparate properly yet. Anyway. This is silly. The Wiccan religion and the Potter universe are not anything alike. The magic in the Potter universe sounds a lot more like what Meriln the Wizard would do in the Arther myths. In other words, Harry Potter is based off of a myth modernized so that young ones can relate to them. So the conclusion, The Potter Series is an Epic designed to get young people's noses back in good literature. People like this need to get over this. There are far greater evils in the universe we need to be combating.

Posted by Xindaeltal Oct 5th 2006

My fragile little mind has been warped by the Harry Potter series. Oh no, whatever shall I do. If only my parents had policed the universe and banned every book they weren't sure I should read, then no other child would have to go through my misery. Oh woe is me. That woman needs a life.

Posted by tonks_394 Oct 5th 2006

Yes. Why didn't we think of it before? Harry Potter has now become the reason for school shootings! Whats next? Will HP be the reason for terrorism too?

Posted by Munchkin Oct 5th 2006

I thought you knew....Harry is Osama in disguise.

Posted by aliceandjasper Oct 5th 2006

Oh, that woman again... Some people never learn, do they? That remembers me: What was it Rowling said? The next time she met another one of those people she wanted to introduce them to Hagrid? Now that´s a brilliant idea...

Posted by Smarty_Roxy Oct 5th 2006

That's right, go through all this 4 Harry Potter, not violent vid-games, not pornagraphy, not bullying, not teen pregnancy, not violence, not anything like that...NOOO, it's HARRY POTTER WHO IS TO BLAME 4 ALL THE EVIL IN THE WORLD!!! I'm a devoted catholic by the way, and I wanna point out that no where in the bible does it say ''If you read Harry Potter, you'll burn.'' disagree?

Posted by AnyaMarcos Oct 5th 2006

Christians should just stick their kids in private Christian schools, or homeschool them. More and more, we see evidence that Christians aren't fit to be around other people.

Posted by MuggleTowne Oct 5th 2006

nope...no disagreeing (?) over here... Ü

Posted by ginaforpeace Oct 5th 2006

I can't believe she said that Harry Potter is the reason why the school shooting occurs, as horrible as they were I don't see how Harry Potter books condone or promote that kind of behavior. Their is always going to be sick and twisted people in the world, they were her before Harry Potter's time and they will be here after. I don't see anything wrong with the books and/or movies. I involve my child who is 7 in these books. And it's just pure fun. On disney channel esp. now they have tons of witch movies shown to kids. Did she ever see "Sabrina the Teen Witch" that had spells. That was a cute show to. I'm sure she would think that was full of witchcraft and evil as well.

Posted by Seventhchild Oct 5th 2006

Here comes the thought police *rolls eyes* Mrs Mallory, not everyone in your state is a Christian, honey. Why don't you take off the apron, step outside and actually see the world?

Posted by joanna Oct 5th 2006

filthy mudblood

Posted by tweetygrll69 Oct 5th 2006

I am so tired of people pushing down the Wicca faith. She needs to research what being Wicca is before she starts making dumb, unfounded statements that shows her children that they can not be accepting of others if they believe in something different. Get a life woman...

Posted by Isil_Helyanwe Oct 5th 2006

You cannot blame the Amish school shooting of Harry Potter. The guy was a paedophile who said he wanted revenge! Compare that to the thousands of people who read Harry Potter and have yet to become psychopathic murderers. (Oh, and mischeifmanaged128: I think you mean Bowling for Columbine...)

Posted by flippinfool13 Oct 5th 2006

uuuurrrrggg. people like this makes me start to loose faith in the human race. ***sigh***

Posted by NoOneWouldListen Oct 5th 2006

How DARE that woman cite the tragic deaths of those children as a reason to ban Harry Potter! That is really low. >:-( She is just such an ingnorant, idiotic, crazy! She makes me feel ashamed to living in Georgia. I wish I'd known when the appeal was... I'd have gone.

Posted by grayback Oct 5th 2006

In the beginning snickered at the adults reading the book; began reading myself when the 1st movie came out. Hearing the negative connotations and evil. I do not see evil; I see a way of teaching not to condemn a different culture, reminding adults of myths while introducing them to younger people, seeing no matter your background there is abuse, neglect, hate, love, friendship, choices, taking responsiblity for actions. As others have mentioned, when you look at other books you might as well eliminate the whole library system. I am glad others encouraged me to read these books because I have enjoyed reading and discussing them with other people of all ages.

Posted by veela84 Oct 5th 2006

I'm a Christian. But I know the difference between real life and fantasy. If she wants to ban Harry Potter, then she needs to ban every book that mentions Wicca, witchcraft, anything "witchy." My PREACHER reads (and loves) the Harry Potter books, for goodness sake!! I don't know....if I ever meet her, I'm gonna get the strong urge to sing "Witchy Woman."

Posted by kyrilliondaemon Oct 5th 2006

Hello? Does she realise that Harry Potter does not tell you to start following the Wicca religion, or that as a recognised religion Wicca should be tolerated fairly and with respect, just as she would want for her own religion. Harry Potter is for anyone and everyone, not just people who are into witchcraft and things like that. I'm 16, non-relgious, and can't understand why the heck she'd want to ban Harry Potter from a library. My grandmother is pretty religious, goes to church reguarly, but she enjoyed the books. I hope that in time Moron Mal (yes thats mallory to the rest of you) will actually realise what she's trying to do and will realise exactly how stupid she is being.

Posted by Anjyp Oct 5th 2006

But, who is she to tell people what to believe? How come the Bible can't be banned cause it promotes "war and illogical thought"? This is America, and no one is allowed to discriminate because of religion. So, even if HP did promote Wicca then there should be no problem.
