RAB revealed?
Following the release of the sixth Harry Potter book, rumors have been abuzz concerning the identity of RAB, the mysterious character who left a note in the cave in the novel's closing chapters. So far, JK has remained relatively tight-lipped on the subject, although she said Regulus Black, Sirius' brother, was a "fine guess" in the MN/TLC interview last summer. Subsequently, (highlight)-->"Arcturus"<-- was suggested by fans as the late Death Eater's middle name after the name of a certain star.

Now, the Portuguese HP translator, Isabel Nunes, has reportedly confirmed this in an interview with a Portuguese fan site. Apparently, before Book 6 hit shelves, she contacted Jo about the character's gender, and was told the full name as well as the gender. Her reason for shedding light on the topic at this point is to "keep awake" the excitement for the seventh book. In the past, Nunes also clarified that Blaise Zabini is a man and Professor Sinistra is a woman.

EDIT: Some readers have written in letting us know that the interview where Nunes said this was conducted last November - you can see it here, page 15. Also, according to commenter Ismara, "A translator doesn't have to sign a contract of confidentiality... Translators can share that type of information as long as it's public. If JKR told her the middle name and the gender, it's public information." Jo hasn't confirmed or denied this - let's hope she doesn't so as to leave room for more conjecture - but take that for what you will!

Awesome:O You should put them on MuggleNet FanFics, they're the best. Oh and check out The Unseemly Proposal by Sparx! ANYWAAAYY. How long do you think it will take Hermione and Ron to finally get together? What is all this with Godric's Hollow? If it was under the Fidelius Charm, how then did Hagrid find the way(Chap.1, PS)?

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

i had this revelation that as the person who died in BK6 died well the 'secret' died with him then wouldnt that make Grimmauld Place the safest place in the wizarding world, unless the one who died in BK6 left a note sayin the where abts of headquarters or leave a message in some form, yh i kno uve probably figured this out long time ago, im slow at these kinda things

Well, she didn't choose now to reveal the identity of R.A.B. The original interview was dated November 2005, when she was interviewed just before the release of the last movie. The site, Nimbus Network, only found out about the interview now. He e-mailed the translator about it, and got a confirmation that she did get the information in the course of translating the Half Blood Prince. Isabel also mentions that she has discussed the issue with Steve Vander Arc, from The Harry Potter Lexicon, and Steve has said for a long time that he was in contact with some translators and that they had all come to the conclusion that R.A.B. is indeed Regulos Black, so I guess that the cross-reference checks. I really don't understand all this hate mail towards the poor translator. This information has been out there for almost an year, and nobody bothered to check it before. I guess not too many Harry Potter fans read Economy magasines. I am surprised that HPANA didn't catch it, but maybe the search machine searches only sites in english.

About the fidelius charm, what happens and such, you should read the information on JK's official page. It says it all, only those who know the whereabouts will get to know them, nobody can be told of it anymore. It is therefore quite safe. Well, if you look away from the fact that Snape knows of it. But he can't tell:D

I think I'll have to post on Mugglenet fanfic sooner or later. What was your theory about Book 7? Grimmauld Place? I tire my family out by pelting them with relentless theories about HP! I think they find me a tad irritating. Fancy that! It shouldn't take Ron and Hermione too long to get together. In a way they kind of remind me of Lily and James. I'll be sure to check out that fanfic. You know you can find a TON of HP stuff on Quizilla. I didn't think there'd be that much there but there is!

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

NOOOO, Snape knows, Snape knows, ermmm......well i thought that snape was a good guy and think that he acted upon dumbledores orders but now he is ermm..gone*crys*....it just sound lyk a reli good plot twist if u get what i mean

He'll kill LV in a duel, like in GOF, and when he stands there he'll be all mad and pointing at LV(who has no wand), and he will say: "You killed my parents. Now I kill you." Then he will say the spell. Hermione is there, she has put a binding spell on LV. Harry will stand there pointing at LV even after he kills him, then Ginny will come running up and look him in the eyes and they will kiss and then later they'll marry. I think the book ends with GW+HP's son's birth, and they look at him and say: "He's got his father's scar." That way it fits with her interviews, she has said that the last word is "scar". This is just how I see it;) Later I've come to the conclusion that there can't be a duel, as we know that those two wands can't duel.

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

amandeep_sagoo you and I can cry with each other! I like Krissa's theory. Weird but cute!

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

*still crying* yh me too, i lyk the bit abt ginny running up to harry and, the son having his fathers scar, reli cool theory Krissa

Posted by Krissa Oct 9th 2006

Theory concerning Dumbledore/Grimmauld Place. She said he is definately dead, but he is still approachable through paintings. Anyway: The point is secret-keeping. The Fideleus Charm makes the secret a total secret, so that only the secret-keeper can tell it to others. Now, with dumbledore dead, though approachable, there is nobody that can tell the secret of Number 12 Grimauld place. Only the ones that have been told the location will know it, and they cannot tell the secret, seeing as they are not the secret-keeper. This is very handy, as Harry is about to move into Number 12 Grimauld Place(I think he will, it's extremely safe!), because nobody will know the location except those who already know it. Snape might be evil, but he cannot tell anyone the location of the HQ. Those who haven't been told by Dumbledore, they cannot even see the house. Harry is therefore pretty safe.

Posted by HorcruxHunter777 Oct 9th 2006

Yep, this is most def a rumor. JK hasn't even told her family who RAB is nor the title to the 7th book. Why would she tell someone such crucial information? In my opinion I think this person is wanting to stir up the seemingly boring and almost nonexistent news on Book 7, I mean, we really have gotten no new information about the book. A fwew debunked rumors and hints, but nothing solid, concrete.

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

yh but what if... what if snape is the evil one and he goes to headquarters and kills harry himself or takes him to voldemort then harry might ....might *crying getting worse*

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

I never thougt of it that way. My family will thank you. You have just given me another way to make them Crazy! My friend had the thought that Dumbledore is a Phoenix animagus and even after Jo said he was definately dead she refused to be brought down. She stubbornly claimed that Phoenixs can die but they are reborn. I hope she is right. My poor Dumbly. I do think however that losing Dumbledore would be like Harry being forced to grow up completely. You know, cause there's no one else.

Posted by gryffingirl99 Oct 9th 2006

I siriusly (ignore the pun please) doubt that Jo would tell us that. Before the title even! Suspicious.. I smell an update to the rumors section of jkrowling.com....

Posted by Krissa Oct 9th 2006

Yeah I was convinced about Dumbledore too, after reading that Dumbledoreisnotdead-page. But then she trashed it. =( And Amandeep, he's evil, but not THAT evil. She has said there is a reason why those who die have to die. Got to go.

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

*nods* yh coz harry doesnt have that father figure that used to be their and with sirius gone there is only lupin, but i bet the weasleys would adopt him, yh but ur right that harry is alone now and will have grow up and take matters into his own hands and do what needs to be done

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

yes, I as well, sense the update drawing closer. Soon, it will come. Strong, I feel it will be. Oh and amandeep, Dahling, you must stop crying. I can't even think about him being evil much less about anyone dying at this point. I wore nothing but black when Dumbledore died. I don't know how I'm going to handle another death much less two or more.

Posted by phoenixlament Oct 9th 2006

i really hope that this theory isnt confirmed because it would be no fun then...no more speculation u know? but i do hope that JKR atleast gives us the title of the 7th book!

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

yes ur right im a proud gryffindor and i will live up to that name, yes i have to accept it and be brave, he is dead now and theres nuthin i can do

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

I need some sort of information to tide me over. Something to think about. I can't wait a whole year for the book with nothing else to do. I could die!

Posted by amara Oct 9th 2006

let's think. did jo tell us who the HBP was? no, you say? then i hardly think she'd tell us who RAB is until the book is released. i'm taking this with a bucket rather than a pinch of salt.

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

That's the spirit Amandeep. Be brave. Oh and Amara is right. Jo never told us that dear Snape was the HBP. She's not gonna give RAB away like that. It's not her style. I just wish she'd give us SOMETHING!!

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

yh i wish she wouldnt leave snide hints here and there and then when we actually find out it becomes so clear and u think omg how could i have bin so stupid, but then again thats what make the books so enchanting and spellbinding and...i cant think of anything else

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

I feel your pain. It gets to the point where I eat sleep and breath HP. In fact, I think I'll check Jo's site again.................... grrrrrrrrr there's nothing there.

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

lol, trust Jo to bide her time now and make us nervous and curious and other things until she actually says anything significant, i think she lyks to c us lyk this

Posted by dumbledoreswoolnsox_22 Oct 9th 2006

COOLNESS!! I actually hope its just a rumour. That way the excitement builds up, and we find out when we read book 7!! There is such thing as giving up too much before the book comes out!! But I'd love it to be Regulus!!

Posted by focusf1 Oct 9th 2006

If this is true then I feel bad for JKR - she puts her trust in these people to protect her secrets, guard her plots and ALSO she lets them adapt and change her works to suit the languages - ANYONE EVER THOUGHT HOW HARD THAT MUST BE FOR HER AS THE AUTHOR. I'm pretty sure she has made it clear that the HARRY POTTER series is like a child to her - its her baby and I totally understand how it would feel to have that trust misused in this way. Its one thing for fans to speculate and work it out for themselves, its totally another for someone trusted by the author and Bloomsbury to betray them and in a way the fans too. I would much prefer JKR leaving hints on her site or in interviews than it come out this way. Poor form from the translator.

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

I agree with focusf1. This must be hard for Jo (If it is true) Even if it's not, how much do you think it sux to have people go around and make up things like this. What I am really enjoying though, is the fact that after hearing about this, no one is saying "ooooo ooooo I wanna know I wanna know!" Everyone is really indignant on Jo's behalf and I think it's great that instead of just being obsessed with the books, we have all really grown attached and developed a deep respect for the author. *sighs*

Posted by flipgirl Oct 9th 2006

OMG!! Blaise is a boy?!?! In a fan fic I'm writing she's (he's) a girl! And why couldn't they keep their fat mouths shut and let us all know who RAB is when the book actually comes out. And when can you start pre-ordering it. And I'm off 2 runescape... which was made in Wales :)

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

yup we have and sumtimes its scary coz we dont even know her and a majority of us have neva met her either but yh i repect the books with most of my heart, there has to br room for lord of the rings although i luv harry potter almost 50 times more than lord of the rings

Posted by dumbledoreswoolnsox_22 Oct 9th 2006

I completely agree with focusf1 and Witchy_Woman!! poor Jo!! I suppose she won't be very happy with that person.

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

and i respect Jo of course aswell

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006

Do you read the Wall of Shame? There's a ton of e-mails from LOTR fans to Emerson talkin' about how much they hate him and how stupid he is for liking HP. Anyway, I gotta fly you guys! Something tells me I'll probably talk to you later! Caio!

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

yh i was reading it a while ago, personally i think there are loads of similatites between LOTR and HP and those ppl on the wall of shame well sum of them deserve to be there but then again its not nice, cya Witchy_Woman, until out paths cross again i bid farewell

Posted by patty892 Oct 9th 2006

I dont even know who that is. the name sounds familiar but i dont remember where i heard it. so i guess that regulus is out of the question. although wasnt it confirmed a while back that it was regulus? didnt the lexicon confirm that? hmm, not im going to be curious all day.

Posted by xoxDreamerGirlxox Oct 9th 2006

If that's true, she certainly shouldn't have told everyone. I'd rather find out who it was WHILE reading the book. However, while it might be true, I'm certainly only treating it as a rumour. I don't think Jo would tell us that kind of information until the book is released.

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Oct 9th 2006

yup i dont think she would release info of such sensitive nature, anyways, have to fly, ive got an appointment with prof.trelawney, i think that she read the translators tea leaves and used the dream oracle to inpret her latest dream and came to this wild conclusion, no way would Jo let that happen without a unbreakable vow, ACCIO firebolt, cya until our paths cross again i bid farewell to all

Posted by hpstephanie Oct 9th 2006

This sounds like a rumor to me. There is already enough buzz about the seventh book(at least among devoted fans), that it dosnt need any more.

Posted by harryhugger Oct 9th 2006

probably a rumor about her blabbing, but Regulus is probably RAB. she'll probably ease this one over. as for the title, i totally believe Micah and she should give the title on Halloween. PLEASE, JO, PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP!!!

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Oct 9th 2006

I am kind of sick of stuff like this true/or not being leaked. I'd rather wait until book 7 to find out who he is, rather than spoil it for us now. I don't know.. I can't see jo letting that slide.. It sounds far fetched.

Posted by MuggleMage Oct 9th 2006

TODAY'S MY BIRTHDAY!!! =^^= yay me I'm fifteen! i really hope this doesn't get confirmed. I wanted it to be a surprise. You know, one of those things that you think about while you read it. But if it's official then there's no anticipation or anything for the true identity of R.A.B :*(

Posted by thiagofpw Oct 9th 2006

Hey guys, I'm Brazilian and (of course) I speak Portuguese... We REALLY need to know the gender of the person, it changes everything...Portuguese is a really boring and difficult language...I don't know if I can believe in this translator, it could be a joke or she can be lying, but, oh... JK, PLEAAAASEEEE, ANSWERRRRR *____*

Posted by Madison_Wales Oct 9th 2006

Happy B-day MuggleMage! I hope that JK Rowling won't say. I want to be in suspence.

Posted by muggleprefect Oct 9th 2006

R.A.B. is REGULAS (a..w/e it is) BLACK! OMG! *jumps up and down* I GUESSED IT RITE! ..er..my friend did. Yea, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUGGLEMAGE!!

Interesting... And by the way... Is it true.... That Emma Watson... ISN' T GOING TO BE HERMIONE IN MOVIE 6-7 ?!!?!!?

Posted by NoOneWouldListen Oct 9th 2006

So that's who their 'reliable source' was last year... I always wondered about that.

Posted by MuggleMage Oct 9th 2006

Gracias!!! *does happy dance*

Posted by justanotherweasley Oct 9th 2006

I hope it's true! Please say it's true!:) That would be wicked if it was true! It would be like the first book seven information:)

Posted by badboy1963 Oct 9th 2006

R.A.B could be blacks brother but who knows.J.K.R is the only one who knows the answer and she would be smart not to tell eather way. Gee I keep wondering who is getting snuffed out in book 7. R.A.B is the least of my worries. I hope R.A.B is blacks brother now that I think of it.

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 9th 2006
