The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Posted by hermionemma Dec 21st 2006

PS, COS, POA, GOF, OOTP, HBP, DH Wouldn't it be interesting if when we re-arranged these letters they spelled something? Unlikely, but interesting... Gah! I can't wait. :D

Ok...a question popped into my head that I can't seem to find the answer to, and it's been bugging me. So I figured I'd ask it here: At the end of book 5, Dumbledore says that many Death Eaters were trapped in the Death Chamber of the Department of Mysteries by anti-apparation jinx. Whatever happened to these Death Eaters?? And who were they? They can't have been sent to Azkaban since Voldemort has control of the Dementors... Thanks for the help :-)

Oh my goodness!!! I just got home from work and this was the GREATEST stress reliever EVER! :D I'm so excited -- even if the "Deathly Hallows" part worries me about some characters futures!

Posted by ajohnson Dec 21st 2006

I was so excited to find out the title today. Made me smile when I thought it was going to be a very bad very long day. I started thinking about it and thought that maybe it has something to do with the Hallows where James and Lilly were murdered. But the veil idea is a good one too. I can't wait to read the 7th book and learn some fact instead of all this guessing!! Thanks JK and Merry Christmas!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAY THANKS JO!

Posted by HPbrownLove1 Dec 21st 2006

i dont think the 7th book will come out on 7/7/07. i think that its a good date but its way too soon. 7/7 is in around 6 months. when the 6th book came out, i knew about it 1 year before and got a preorder form a year before too. AND, with all the 5th harry potter movie stuff going on, i dont think Jo would want to bring it out at that time. dont get me wrong, im still voting on 7/7/07... i just dont think that date is going to happen =/

Posted by Ginny Dec 21st 2006

ooo!!... the veil!... at last that topic surges!... i've been wondering if the veil will be something important!!... the fifth book left me so :O... I still can't understand the veil!... hey!... ppl!... loads of you are getting confused here... its hallow... which means it is not hollow... wich means it musn't have anything to do with godrics hollow... (the title of course!)

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

LOL keep the party going... YEAH! GOOO BOOK 7! or as we have to call it now.... DEATHLY HALLOW!

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

heres my theory, just cos the forum is inundated and wnt let me on!! stuipd thing :P so yeh neway, "deathly hallows" hallows - Hallowed halls etc, maybe voices of those lost AKA the viel, deathly, links in with this, maybe the veil has a lot more to do with this thn i thought, because hallows- the hallowed voices of those lost maybe?

Posted by isa Dec 21st 2006

This is the best christmas present ever! Thanks to Micah of course, after all, Micah gets results. -.^

Posted by sublimemilae Dec 21st 2006

i think this definitely means a Halloween release for the final book. By the way, I found an interesting definition for hallows on google: ("holy" or "holy night") the Oct. 31 Greater Sabbat, also called November Eve, the Celtic Samhain ("sow-en"); the beginning of the Celtic winter, and of the Celtic year; the beginning of the Witches' Year, when the Veil Between the Worlds grows thin (!) and the spirits of the dead may return to Earth; the Descent of the Goddess to the Underworld; the final Harvest festival Thanks JK, happy holidays!

Posted by julietsurvives Dec 21st 2006

Well, I'm hoping the book DOESN'T come out in the summer... I'd rather have the book AFTER the movie... It's just that I'm not going to give a rip about the movie when the book's out... I want the book to come out later than that... I don't want the story to end so soon... But at the same time I want to know what happens... What a dilemma...

OMFG! YESYESYESYESYES!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Y E S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTT TTTTTTT! OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!

Posted by Ginny Dec 21st 2006

ok!... i was on the forums... (which by the way are collapsed and wont let me on!... i had this gigantic comment and it all went down the looo... ¬¬)... anyway!... this realy smart girl called ginnywinny got me into a VERY interesting subject!... this is what she said (part of..)...: The Hallows could refer to the Four Hallows of Arthurian legend. They are intimately connected to the Grail and ultimately probably go back to the Four Treasures of the Tuatha de Danaan of Irish myth. The Four Hallows are: The Cup or Chalice The Baton or Wand The Sword or Dagger The Coin, Disc or Pentacle

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

haha, by the end of the year there will be no one who doesn´t know what google has to say about hallows or what it means in general for that matter ;). great and I´m noticing that I like the title more and more...

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

...AT the solstace will come a new... and none will come after!!

Posted by Snugglebug Dec 21st 2006

Huh...am I the only one who thinks that the title seems rather...not up to standard (To put it gently). It sounds like a title for a childs book or a childs television show...the others were MUCH better.

Posted by lam13 Dec 21st 2006

I am soooooo excited!!!!! Um, I think it means a graveyard, because hallows means holy..... I think it means where Harry's parents were buried...... I think that Harry and some of his friends will have to fight a death eater there.... And someone will die, maybe Snape or Lupin or Ginny or Ron........ Maybe not though.... *shrugs*

Posted by Kareen Dec 21st 2006

"Deathly Hallows"... sounds creepy. I like I like I like I like... wait... no... revise that... I love I love I love! Why does the summer have to be so far away!!!! Curse you slow-moving time!

Posted by Ginny Dec 21st 2006

hahahaha!!... my google is slightly slow... might this mean something... ??... hahahahaha!!... anway!... all hallows eve??... isn't that halloween??... i read it was in google:S... but i like the other definition more:P... heehee!!

Posted by Kamion Dec 21st 2006

Deathly Hallows? sounds a bit like a Sleepy Hollow. and as all, but then ALL predictions and analyses based on the title HalfBloodPrionce proved to be miles beyond the mark I don't goning to connect any idea to this title. Bigger gift would be a release date.

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

all hallows eve is halloween- wen the barrier between the living and dead worlds is at its thinnest and is supposed to cross over...

Posted by chibikagome7 Dec 21st 2006

Wow this is awesome!!! I was at a Christmas party the other day and Santa was there, and Mrs. Claus asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said that I wanted JKR to reveal the title of book 7. Thanks Santa!!!!!

Posted by joanovarq Dec 21st 2006

PlickaPlicka: sorry for the slow response -- I am at work! Are you asking for the text from OotP referencing the winter solstice? If so, I don't have it with me, but some brilliant person already quoted it somewhere within the first 300 postings. What that person said was that while Harry & friends were running around in the Department of Mysteries, they accidentally broke another prophecy which said something along the lines of "it will be revealed on the solstice, and then no more..." (not an exact quote) So if you want to go back to OotP, it will be toward the end of the book in the chapters where they are in the Department of Mysteries, assuming the poster who mentioned this is correct (I'm sure he/she was).

Halloweeeen....hrm...it does appear in the books now and then ;)...and that would be a better release date than the summer because I don´t want it to end. I do want to read it but....not yet. On the other hand, if I could have it now; I wouldnt hesitate for a second to reach out and read it ;)

Posted by Matrinka Dec 21st 2006

ajohnson -- try a different browser. JK's site gives me headaches with Netscape, but its great with Firefox and IE.

I heard the title in Sunrise Australia in Channel 7 before I went here. The woman said that Harry may, I repeat, may die in book seven. I spat out my breakfast when I heard that lol but still, Deathly Hallows? Sounds like a place, like Spinners End, sounds ominous as well, but that's just me *shrug*

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

lol, reading the book now, i think i wud suffer sleep deprevation from not putting it down but at the same tym i wud be reluctant to read it lol cos i dnt wnt it to end :(

Posted by HP_and_me Dec 21st 2006

Wow.... It's been 7 hour 27 minutes since I first read the title for book seven, and Im still kind of in shock. I mean, now that everything is starting to sink in it just feels so weird and unreal... And all the theories make my brain go all fuzzy.. I think one of those Wrackspurts are zooming around my room... Ans also, when a friend reminded me about the prophecies in book 5: "At the Solstice will come a new" "and none will come after" I seriously thought I was going to die. Jo actually told us years ago when the title for book 7 would be released... SOLSTICE--> TODAY!!!! Genious, just genious......! So now Im really, really happy, confused, awestruck, sad and amazed- all at once... Sad because this is actually the END... the E.N.D... Omg...

Has anyone read Melindaleo on the fanfic? She did a 7th Horcrux story that totaly kicked. I could have almost been happy just reading that. So excited for Deathly Hallows!!

Posted by roadtripkaraoke Dec 21st 2006

Release date, woman! Grr. Honestly, kind of luke warm about the title. The others made me go "Oooo, I wonder what that means!" This makes me think "Yeah, okay, HP and the Dangerous Stuff. Woo." RELEASE DATE.

Posted by hpkate Dec 21st 2006

Okay, so here's my TOTALLY long take on the title... “Deathly” is too ambiguous of a term to definitely say what that will reference, though I do feel that Jo’s choice of using “deathly” rather than “deadly” is an interesting one. “Deathly” can mean “causing death,” or “of or pertaining to death,” but it can also mean “in the manner of death,” or “like death.” Like I said: ambiguous. However, “deadly,” although it does also have “like death” as a less common definition, certainly connotes a much more causal relationship, i.e., if something is deadly, it causes death. “Deadly Hallows” would indicate that the mysterious “hallows” cause death. “Deathly Hallows,” on the other hand, imply that the hallows pertain to/deal with death, not that they cause it. I love the theories I’ve been reading about “hallow” tying into grail lore. I think that the Cup/Wand/Sword/Pentacle connection is fascinating, and I wonder, like everyone else who has read about the grail, if something about the Wand pertains to Ravenclaw. Could Voldemort’s wand have belonged to Ravenclaw at one point? Perhaps the wood it was made of was from a forest on her land. Or (and I like this idea, though I’m not sure it’s very likely) perhaps Fawkes himself had been Rowena’s pet at one point in the past, thus justifying in Voldemort’s mind that his wand was something that belonged to Ravenclaw? I’m sure Dumbledore would have known of Fawkes’ previous owner if this were the case, but he may not have thought to make such a connection. Concerning the relation between “hallows” and Halloween, I do think it is absolutely by design that major events, e.g. deaths of Lily and James, occur on Halloween. In legend, Halloween is the night when people can commune with those beyond the grave. Could this mean that on Halloween, someone could possibly cross beyond the veil without being permanently stuck there? Or perhaps proximity to it could be significant. I know we all think that the book wi...
