The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

to Ginny: i love the theory that u and your friend were coming up with. It completely makes sense, as the Horcruxes. A cup, wand, sword, and pentacle could definitely be horcruxes. AND there are only 4 horcruxes left to find (other than voldemort himself)... and four ideas that u came up with. to hpkate: fawkes is dead. Remember the "Fawke's Lament' or somethihng from the 6th book...Fawkes died, along with Dumbledore... But i like the theory, Ginny!! I'm so excited!!

hi~

Posted by Jadore_Bella Dec 21st 2006

I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! STFU all of you who "aren't impressed!" It's her book, she can call it whatever she likes! Think about what your lives would be like without JKR! She's the author and she knows what she's doing and we at least got a title! Personally, I could not be happier!!!!!!!!!

Posted by hpkate Dec 21st 2006

Sorry, here's the rest of my theory! I know we all think that the book will deal with the veil. Historically, Jo has brought up people/places/things almost in passing in a book, and then she has had them play a much larger role two books following the mention. The veil was not only mentioned but was significant in OOTP, but since then, nothing has brought our attention back to the veil itself, but merely to Sirius’ absence. The past event at the veil ties in directly with Regulus (if for no other reason than that it was his brother who fell behind the veil), and I am certain that the future event at the veil will impact or be impacted by Regulus. I don’t know where this leaves me in terms of a hard and fast theory. But I do know one thing: Harry will not die. These are children’s books. I know, I know, they are way too advanced for 99.43% of children under the age of 14 to really grasp, but that doesn’t change the fact that Jo wrote these for a younger audience and that she has continued to defend her choice to be a children’s author since the first book was written. If Jo were to kill off Harry, she would be telling every child who reads the book that life sucks and then you die. She would be saying that your parents will die and you’ll grow up in awful circumstances with relatives who despise you. You will grow close to people in your school only to see them marred by curses, pain, and, in some cases, death. You will lose the closest thing to a parent you have ever known thus furthering your despair. Your hero, mentor, and the source of all of your hope will die. And all of these people will die, essentially, to save you. And then, when it seems like nothing worse could happen, you will die, too. You may have moments in which you were happy, but overall, your life will have just been horribly, horribly sad. I think telling a 12 year old kid this is a form of cruelty that Jo could never descend to.

I'm so happy. :-D This title presents so many different possibilities. My imagination will be working overtime until the moment this puppy comes out. Also: I'm Top 1000! hahaha

Posted by Rictemsempra Dec 21st 2006

OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!! I've been waiting for the title for sooo long but I never really thought that it'd ever actually come... and now it's here!!!! Ah at first it didn't sink in that it was THE TITLE TO BOOK 7!!!! But once I realised that it was the ACTUALLY REAL LIVE TITLE I started hypervenalating!!!! :P OMG we're getting closer and closer to THE END.

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

to be fair, ahsnt she alredy sed life sux, shes killed off every person closest to harry?

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

Look, she did say in an interview years ago that she doesn´t write so that children can feel safe.....life isn´t safe, it is entertaining and in moments very very sad. But , I don´t want harry to die either!!!

Posted by SandyDandy Dec 21st 2006

omg. i like screamed so much when i saw the title! i cant wait i think itll b the best book by far! althoughs deaths are always extremely sad and depressing, those scenes are always reallllly interesting too!

Posted by joanovarq Dec 21st 2006

The person who pointed out that the words "deathly" and "hallows" both have 7 words is on to something. We all know that JKR likes the number 7. I'm sure that has some significance but I can't put my finger on it just yet. Also, I agree with the person who suggested that "deathly hallows" may refer to a day (October 31?) on which you can contact the dead. That would make sense, considering Harry will need help from some dead wizards who don't have portraits (his parents, Sirius, etc.). I don't think "Deathly Hallows" is a place -- that would be too obvious. The title does not mean Voldemort will die on Halloween -- too soon in the book. I don't think "Deathly Hallows" refers to anything that has been specifically mentioned before -- it will be something that *follows* from stuff mentioned in previous books, but it won't be something that was specifically identified, so I doubt the title refers to horcruxes.

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

oooooo! I can't wait!!! YEAH I'VE BEEN PARTING FOR ALMOST 12 HOURS NOW!! lol!

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

can i just say if JKR did kill off harry, wudnt tht just be well no offence but stupid? cos if she does tht means its a whole part of her life she has completely cut off, she cn never go bk to it, if ya get me. Also didnt she once say tht Harry was her in so many ways? so wudnt it just be like killing a major part of herself?

Posted by lillink1222 Dec 21st 2006

The one thing that doesn't make sense to me is the use of 'hallow'. The way that its used in the title makes it out to be a noun, while it usually is a verb (as far as I know). It's definately a very odd choice of words. But still, I can't wait! I'm in such a harry potter mood right now.

Posted by robin4272 Dec 21st 2006

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!

Posted by polkadots56 Dec 21st 2006

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! I LOVE IT!

Posted by catters Dec 21st 2006

all i can think is.... OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!! lol actually i looked up "hallows" and it means: 1. To make or set apart as holy. 2. To respect or honor greatly; revere. i combined that with deathly and came up with... holy death eaters??? lol maybe voldy and the d.e's are finally getting the "respect" they think they deserve?

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

did anyone else notice that SS+CoS+PoA+GoF+OotP+HBP=1 7???

Posted by joelephant Dec 21st 2006

Zomg! I can't wait until H&TDH comes out!

Posted by luigiman90 Dec 21st 2006

oh my crap, i think i just pooped my pants. >.

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

@ psychosamie, sinister name by the way. Yeah, it would be stupid cause it would be so depressing. But if she does kill him off, she has decided to do so maybe almost 16 years ago so she would have grieved already, (like the case with dumledore). For us it was news but not for her. But don´t worry, Harry will not die. :)

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

@bwof : this is tru, but atm im too fasinated with the fact tht the title in so many ways cud mean seeing sirius in some way agen (well frm some of the thoeries ive red neway) lol

Posted by Kid_A Dec 21st 2006

I'm so happy while this title doesn't leave much room for theories it's still a title and today is mt birthday which was made infinitely more pleasurable by my checking Mugglenet in second period when the teacher wasn't looking. Thank you Mugglenet!

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

@ Kid_A ; Why don´t you check it on google? * falls off the chair in laughter*

Posted by itsharrypotter Dec 21st 2006

wow thats just awesome it sounds a little weird, but all of the titles do until we get used to them

Posted by Wellsie Dec 21st 2006

OMG!!! knowing just the title opens up a whole world of possibilities!

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

Kid_A: hallows means To make or set apart as holy, or To respect or honor greatly; revere

Posted by lei300 Dec 21st 2006

i don't want anyone else to die!!! dumbledore was bad enough!!! i hope she's faking us out.... i would be really sad if any of the charcters i love (especially ron, hermione, and harry) die.... :( i'm scared

Posted by LOL_dAnCeR Dec 21st 2006

any1 notice this? SS was the shortest book, and only two letters in the title. they got slowly (or quickly) longer, with three words in each title, then OotP was FOUR letters, and the longest book, the HBP was shorter, back to three letters. so this could mean that it will be SHORT!!!! NOOO!!!!

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

@ bwof - lol, google it!! solution to all prblems :P

Posted by Ferder Dec 21st 2006

While it's pretty cool to hear the new book's name (and what a curious one it is), I still can't understand why this is SUCH a big deal for people. It's not like the new book just arrived in the mail or we found out that it was coming out next week or something like that.

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

dang.. jave to leave the party for a while! ALL HAIL BOOK 7!!!

Posted by Matrinka Dec 21st 2006

JK Rowling: Confusing those who can not tell the letter "a" from the letter "o" since 2006. The title is "Deathly HALLOWS" not hollows. They mean two differenting things. As a comparison: think of the word tentacles. Now think of a part of the male body that sounds the same. Yep, that one letter makes a HUGE difference in meaning.

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

@ psychosamie; yeah, that´s right ;). I hope we would get a glimpse of sirius as well, that would be brilliant.

Posted by Kid_A Dec 21st 2006

From Google and from what I know, I'm making a guess that it means "Hollowed things that are deathly" but it reminds me "deadly". I think I can't gonna know the real meaning of it unless I see the summary of the book, which is a far away event. :P

Posted by psychosamie Dec 21st 2006

@ Ferder - lighten up, tis the biggest news weve had about the book yet so forgive us if we get slighlty overexcited but it opens the door to so many possibilities now..

Posted by kirsti Dec 21st 2006

Thats a pretty cool title, my bf texted me to tell me this when he found out lol, I was slightly on a bus and just styarted smiling like mad, which made all my mates thing I'm mental, but oh well, will just have to wait for the actual book now.. Wonder if JKR will reveal anything else? Like while waiting for HBP we ot that little extract and chapter names and stuff? We'll just have to wait and see. Getting exciting now :P x

Posted by jupiter21243 Dec 21st 2006

i jusrt want to say, I saw the title on my last day of school before break, and what an awesome way to start Christmas break! Anyway, the title sounds cool, but quick question. What's a hallow?

Posted by Flying_Cows Dec 21st 2006

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOO "HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HOLLOW"!!!!! I SAW THAT ON THE NEWS TODAY; THEY WERE LIKE "And also, two people will die in the book!"

Posted by Tinkerbell0578 Dec 21st 2006

AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM FREAKING!!! I'm sorta sad though. It's the last time I will ever find out a new title to a harry Potter book. :(

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

That´true but She will write NEW books which will be as...sensational ;)

Posted by GrownUpChick Dec 21st 2006

Hpkate: I've been thinking all along that Harry will die but you bring up a very valid point. Perhaps you should send your post to Jo so that she'll think twice before doing the poor boy in! Just kidding! She's going to do what she's going to do. If she decided at the beginning that Harry has to die, we can't possibly expect her to change her mind. I hate the idea of him dying but I really think he will. I also think he may somehow be resurrected, though I have no idea how this will play out or what good it will do for Ron, Hermione, and every character in the books who loves Harry.

Posted by lupinslover Dec 21st 2006

I don't know if some one's already mentioned this....I wasn't going to read the comments, but any cule as to why it's plural? And deathly is like death, not dying.....the whole title makes me confused....Why do we have to wait to find out about the book....*wishes that it was several months from now....hopefully the day the book come's out*....i wish wishes came true...

Posted by sapphired900 Dec 21st 2006

OMG I LUV IT WOO!!!!! THTS A GREAT TITLE! now we all have 2 wait how the harry potter series end.

Posted by LOL_dAnCeR Dec 21st 2006

omgomgomgomg random theory: the seventh horcrux will be harry's dad's (or possibly moms) grave. i just shouted "oh my god" really loudly when i thot of this theory and my non-hp little sister has no idea what im talking about.
