The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Isn't Hallows a verb? So an adjective, Deathly, cannot be applied to it? Does she mean Hallows as a noun?!

Posted by lenix Dec 21st 2006

Three words...Harry's gonna die :'(

Posted by lenix Dec 21st 2006

Deathly - means fatal, mortal, destructive - an adverb (modifies a verb) Hallow - it IS a verb - means to purify, make holy, keep sacred Are you all thinkin' what i am? something or someone will be kept sacred or pure through the ultimate sacrifice...hence my previous comment

no harry cant die!! i would cry

Posted by Darth_Vader11 Dec 22nd 2006

Remember how JKR said she had a title that was a vowel and two consonants ahead... What if the title was originally "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hall". One vowel, 'o', and two consonants, 'w' and 's', later we get "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"!

YES!!! An excellent christmas gift!! Thank you so much JK!! n.n

OH MY GOD cant believe it I hope there's another one of those cover contests...odd title but it's cool...

Posted by TheOtherMinister Dec 22nd 2006

Wow! It hasn't even been a day since the title got released, and there are already over a hundred comments. So Deathly Hallows is what book 7 is called. What a title! I like it! now I can FINALLY stop calling it "HP book 7!" I'd like to know though, what the other two possible titles were (and what the possible titles for the other six books might have been).

Posted by hermy10 Dec 22nd 2006

OMG!!!! OOOOMMMMMGGGG!!! I still can't believe it! The last and final title! I really have accepted the big possibility that harry won't survive in the final book, but hearing the LAST title a lot of things crossed my mind. The Deathly Hallows??? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?? Harry and Death in a title? OMG! It's really sad there's not another book coming... :(

Posted by stardust88 Dec 22nd 2006

i dont think she will tell us what the other titles were until after the book is released.. if one of them is very different she might reveal more information than she wants to (if that makes sense.) Two titles reveal more than one does! I still think that "deathly hallows" refers to the graveyard at Hogwarts. She said there was one and that it was relevant to a future book.. but so far we haven't seen it anywhere. (the graveyard in books 4 and 6.. presumably the same one.. is not at hogwarts.)

918th yes!!!!!

Posted by sedona Dec 22nd 2006

Yes lenix. Someone or something will be made holy through death... kinda makes you think of Horcrux's. I do wonder where he made them... And the Hallow in the title might have something to do with All Hallow's Eve. Read this story please everyone, its quite interesting: The jack-o-lantern element of the Halloween tradition can be traced back to the Irish story of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard drinking old farmer who tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him(hallowing sort of ) by carving a cross into the trunk of the tree. In revenge, the devil places a curse on old Jack which dooms him to wander the earth at night for eternity. That could happen in it's own Harry Potter way. Except it wouldn't be a cross, and Harry isn't exactly greedy, gambling, or a drunk. Hm. But in the tradition of Halloween, Voldemort's red eyes are the sign of the "devil". Not his eyes, but the color red is associated with the devil in Halloween season. BUT WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO HARRY'S SCAR! I think it's going to save him or destroy him. The Lightning bolt, or thunderflash, derives from light; it is celestial fire and the source of divine goodness. In Greek myth it is a symbol of the creative powers of Zeus and in Roman myths a symbol of Jupiter. In the Old Testament lightning refers to spiritual illuminations as a sudden realization of truth cutting across time and space. TIME and space. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH HHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! I just want to read the book! I know, join the club.

Posted by Sherbooke Dec 22nd 2006

That has certainly got us thinking!! It is possible that the book will be released on "All Hallows Eve" (Halloween). Is it not also possible that something traumatic will happen in the book on Halloween as it has for every other book so far. I hope this is not the case as very few countries in the world (even in the western world) celebrate Halloween and may not identify with it. The title is somewhat depressing even for adults!! However we look forward to it whatever it contains...

Posted by Baphomet Dec 22nd 2006

Deathly Hallows? Hmm...somehow, I had expected something more imaginative than that.

Posted by LadyDarkheart Dec 22nd 2006

I got an email today from Borders.com saying that the new title had been released. To make sure it wasn't just a fluke, I shot over to MuggleNet RIGHT AWAY. You don't know how HAPPY I was to find that it was true!!! I can't wait for the book! "I'm so excited!"

Posted by Glitterbug Dec 22nd 2006

OH MY GOD please don't say JKR is tricking us! I originally didn't like this title, but im warming up to it. It doesn't give us as many oppertunities for theories as HBP, though. Can't wait! I bet it's released 7/7/07 SO EXCITED! XXX

Posted by rex Dec 22nd 2006

em, even though i am happy, HP & t DH doesn't sort of click, its doesn't flow on the tongue as smoothly as the others, but still, i am happy, an d i positively believe that there must be a reason she chose Deathly instead of Deadly ciao

Posted by MiracleMira Dec 22nd 2006

Me again ... just wanted to say the 7/7/07 sounds pretty good to me course I'm not British, but I can see how that would be bad timing and as far as the movie - let them move that instead of the date for the book(cause I agree that sadly for us the publicists and producers won't let that date happen and it will be a bit wierd for me as well to read book 7 and see movie 5 but on second thought why the hell not). As far as I'm conserned the perfect thing would be to have the movie as a New Years present and the book for my B-day (June 25th) wouldn't that be the coolest ahh well I'll go back to daydreaming. THANKS JO Merry Christmas to you and your lovely familly.

Posted by Wassan Dec 22nd 2006

OH MY GOD!!!!! What the hell could it mean????? I know the title sounds scary but I don't think Harry will die!!!!!

Posted by LindseyBindsey Dec 22nd 2006

HPDH sounds better than HPPS or HPHBP... This is the first time we have just 2 words after 'Harry Potter and the...' since PS/SS

Posted by Naush Dec 22nd 2006

And my collegues are wondering why I'm continously grinning at the office.... Go Harry! Go JKR! I'm so happy....

Posted by AzureTimm Dec 22nd 2006

I actually registered for this post! I feel obliged to do something and now Here I am, the title! Yay!

Posted by The_Oddball Dec 22nd 2006

I think the title is grim. Now I think Harry will die. It made me sad. That I didn't post yesterday. But still can't wait to read it!

Posted by harrypotteraddict Dec 22nd 2006

ok i couldn't be bothered reading all 933pgs + because its nearly 10 and im going on holiday tomorrow. i dont no if this has been mentioned before but i read the chicago sun times and it said that jo said that two people will die. now i wonder who those could be?

Sweet! Sounds great! I'm lovin it!

this is a follow up on reini's comment on pg 12... "Ok, Muggles. "Hallows" means to bless someone or something. But only that this blessing will cause death. Therefore the title "deathly hallows". "Hallows" is the plural form of a verb, not a noun. And "deathly" is the same like "deadly". It is an adverb, not the plural of a noun. I am sure this "blessing" is connected with the making of horcruxes. May be that the "blessing" (to hallow) is actually to perform the spell (on someone) which is needed to make a horcrux. Now I am convinced that Harrys scar is indeed a horcrux. Voldemorts spell on Harry that night in Godrics Hollow was connected with the horcrux spell which should cause Harrys death. So by accident Voldemort "blessed" Harry with a horcrux." It's a great theory, but.... *blubbers* Did Reini just say that HARRY'S SCAR is a HORCRUX? But I just have one teeny weeny little other thing. In OOTP its says "and Harry's scar burst open and he knew that he was dead". Did this scar-bursting-open thing have anything to do with Reini's theory about Harry's scar being a Horcrux? I don't doubt it but how would we know when Harry's scar is destroyed, if it is a Horcrux? Will it disappear or will Harry have to die? Harry might be one of the two people who Jo says in the Chicago Sun Times (read the online article, she says that two people will die. Harry and Hagrid, perhaps?).

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Wow, JK. Excellent. I'm excited :) I have a THEORY, please hear me out: I've been awake tonight thinking about what this final title might mean (curse of the HP-obsessed). Based on my quick read-over of other comments posted here, I think we're all a little puzzled as to what JK means by "Hallows." When I looked up 'hallow' in the dictionary, it was defined as a verb: "to make hallowed or holy." However, I feel that the title doesnât make much sense if âHallowsâ is being used as a verb (Harry Potter and the Deathly is Hallowing?). I guess âto hallowâ could be an ACTION that she is somehow using as a plural noun (Harry Potter and the Deathly Acts of Hallowing?), but this also doesnât make sense to me. I feel that the word âHallowsâ most likely refers to a plural THING (a noun not referring to an ACTION), because I think JK would keep in parallel with her other titles, all of which were: Harry Potter and the X, where X = a noun (person, place, or thing, never an ACTION) plus modifier(s). On this note, I saw that some people haveo suggested that "Hallows" may mean "spirits", as in "All Hallows' Eve" (Halloween). My speculations on the final title are based on that very idea. If, by "Hallows," JK means "spirits," then I wonder whether the "Deathly Hallows" that she speaks of aren't some of the most significant spirits in Harry's quest to defeat Voldemort- the fragments of Voldemort's soul stored in the remaining horcruxes? First, note that this theory explains the plurality of the word "HallowS*": the fact that multiple âHallowsâ are being referred to coincides with the fact that there are multiple remaining soul fragmentS in the remaining horcruxES (*capitalization for emphasis). We've already encountered one of these soul fragments in the Chamber of Secrets: the ghost-like or spirit-like projection of the sixteen-year-old Voldemort's preserved soul fragment from the horcrux that was his diary. ...

Posted by refills Dec 22nd 2006

i dont want to be a downer or anything, but the title sounds crap to me. it doesnt exactly roll off the tongue...

Posted by seven7 Dec 22nd 2006

...continuation from the post before last (THEORY) The fact that the preserved bits of Voldemort-soul in the horcruxes are ghastly and spirit-like seems to make it possible that JK would refer to them as "Hallows" (IF, of course, "Hallows" means "spirits"). Such a reference in the title seems to go along with the general purpose of this final book: for Harry to destroy Voldemort. Every year until now, Harry has been making further and further progress into figuring out how exactly to accomplish this task. In HBP, he realized that in order to destroy Voldemort, he must find and destroy all of Voldemort's remaining soul fragments. Therefore, if the "Deathly Hallows" are indeed Voldemort's soul fragments, then doesn't it sort of make sense that JK would choose this as the title for the seventh book, based on predictions that in this book, Harry will be out searching for the horcruxes and attempting to destroy them, thereupon having to deal with the "Hallows" (soul-fragment spirits) concealed inside of them? Concerning the word "Deathly," I've taken it to mean "having to do with death." If the "Hallows" are indeed the soul fragments in the horcruxes, then it surely makes sense to call them "Deathly"- they have loads to do with death. The very formation of these soul fragments ("Hallows") required death- Voldemort had to commit murder in order to rip his soul apart. Furthermore, I fear that the "Hallows" being described as "Deathly" bodes ill for Harry or any other characters who must face the "Hallows," because the "Hallows" may bring harm or even DEATH to these characters (as the horcrux diary almost did to Ginny and the horcrux Nagini almost did to Mr. Weasley). It's really very possible that my entire THEORY is flawed or missing an important point. Please give me your feedback!
