The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows????? "Deathly" better mean Harry dies.

Posted by Elizabeth_S Dec 22nd 2006

Oh man Oh man Oh man, this is it! That's it! The last title! It's almost over. It's funny because I thought this was breaking news because I saw it on the news but then I go to my dad and he's like, "Uh, I knew that". He at least could have told me because he listens to talk radio 24/7 and hears all the news as it happens. Oh well it was kinda funny anyway. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO!

Posted by Gorgeous Dec 22nd 2006

Woah. Still not the most amazinly informative title, but still something to work on! At first, I thought it was a joke, but I guess it's the real title! I don't know, there's something horrible final about the series when the title was revealed. Boo! Anyways, I can't wait.

Posted by Dana_of_the_DA Dec 22nd 2006

seven7, I really like your theory. You've said almost everything that could be concluded from the title. But unlike any others ,I don't think that Harry's going to die. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE WE'VE GOT THE TITLE AND THAT THE SERIES WILL BE SOON OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by HPfanatic71 Dec 22nd 2006

Seven7! What you just said totally makes sense to me. I think you hit it right on the nose.

Posted by mooseman93 Dec 22nd 2006

We almost have 1000 comments!

Posted by HPfanatic71 Dec 22nd 2006

Oh yea!... Btw.. I'm also one of those that think Harry wont die. Or at least hope so. Deathly doesn't mean it's Harry that'll die. Remember!! He's not the only one that going to go hunt for the Horcruxes.

Posted by abi Dec 22nd 2006

well the dictionary defanition(yes i can't spell) is verb: render holy by means of religious rites Maybe this refers to the horcruxs? Because there is a certain spell or rite that you have to do to spilt your soul. And deathly? Things arent looking good for Harry...

Posted by samia_padfoot Dec 22nd 2006

WHOA...this title's givin' me the creeps...it's a bit grave, but nevertheless, interesting! i'm DYING to get hold of the 7th one! thanx jkr, for this lovely christmas present!

Posted by onlii_artist Dec 22nd 2006

again, i will repeat, its HOLLOWS not HALLOWS.

Posted by Susan14 Dec 22nd 2006

Is it 'Hallows' or 'Hollows'? Mugglenet seems to insist 'hallows'....

Posted by RhiannonMei Dec 22nd 2006

No, I'm pretty sure that it is Deathly Hallows, not Deathly Hollows. That's what it said on the Barnes & Nobles website, anyway.

Posted by onlii_artist Dec 22nd 2006

the press conference i was reading referred to it as "hollows." i dunno. i'll do hangman again.

Posted by onlii_artist Dec 22nd 2006

weird. well, it would make more sense for it to be "hollows" but obviously jo knows what she's doing. i'll...look up on it.

Posted by Susan14 Dec 22nd 2006

I just watched the Mugglenet video. It is most definitely HALLOWS.

Posted by diasphora Dec 22nd 2006

It's Hallows, the time when spirits can communicate most effectively with the living. Just my opinion, but Deathly Hollows would sound silly. Too literal and 'kiddie.' The titles are sometimes not massive parts of the book, anyway, like Goblet of Fire. Something horrible might go down on Halloween in Book 7 that affects the rest of the book but is rarely mentioned by name again. My guess goes more in that direction. :-D

Posted by lalala Dec 22nd 2006

Yea, but it's the last book. And after having to choose between 2 titles, I would think that DH would be significant. What do you think the other 2 titles were?

Posted by joshholly Dec 22nd 2006

woot woot...jo rocks

Posted by dumbledoresman Dec 22nd 2006

YAHOOOOOOOOO!!!no one but i would believe that i wasnt this happy even when i had passed my CA examss:D:D:D:D i was actually feeling lyke dancing all the dayyyyyy!!! Love u Jo!

Posted by rupertsgirl Dec 22nd 2006

SQUEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

Posted by talkingeyebook Dec 22nd 2006

Anyone think that Deathly Hallows could be a group of ghosts who call themselfs "The Deathly Hallows". I don't think it will necessarily be harmful to Harry as the word in the title is Deathly (related to death) and not deadly (harmful).

Posted by Krissa Dec 22nd 2006

I don't think I could have been more dissappointed of the title. I've been really excited, but when I heard it I wa like: WHAT? It stinks, it has nothing to do with magic, and really, could it sound worse? The Deathly Hallows, it's not worthy of being a Harry Potter title. It stinks, that's what I think, anyway. Hrmph.

Posted by HPbrownLove1 Dec 22nd 2006

To Krissa: i didnt think HBP was a good title either...but it grew on me. its not the BEST, but you cant be sure until you READ the book =)

Posted by Isil_Helyanwe Dec 22nd 2006

Okay, first I'd like to say thanks to Jo for giving us the title for Christmas! But... I don't know, the title's a little disappointing. And it's 'hallows' not 'hollows', so I doubt that the title is referring to anything to do with Godric's Hollow. I'm thinking 'hallows' ... 'All Hallow's Eve' ... 'Hallowe'en'. Somesort of massacre on Hallowe'en?

Posted by XboredX Dec 22nd 2006

OMg that soo freaken cool. i cant wait for the book. This is so awesome!!!

Posted by skates Dec 22nd 2006

Where can I see those pics Jane_Eyre? Ok. Now it's "Hollows" not "Hallows"????what? What would that change in the meaning?!

Posted by Faolan Dec 22nd 2006

It definitly is Hallows, not Hollows. And Deathly, not Deadly, so it doesn't so much imply death as it does death-like. And, what did PoA or HBP seemingly have to do with magic? Maybe some people should wait for the book to make judgments on the title. JK knows what she is doing.

name used by some traditions for Samhain, or Halloween crypt.eldritch s.com/wicca/glossary.html ("holy" or "holy night") the Oct. 31 Greater Sabbat, also called November Eve, the Celtic Samhain ("sow-en"); the beginning of the Celtic winter, and of the Celtic year; the beginning of the Witches' Year, when the Veil Between the Worlds grows thin and the spirits of the dead may return to Earth; the Descent of the Goddess to the Underworld; the final Harvest festival

Posted by Frontrunner Dec 22nd 2006

Who ever pointed out the grammar is on the right track. Jo used an anagram in book 2 so maybe she is using this again like “ WHOâ€LL SLAY DEATH†Just a thought. What do you think?

Posted by mooseman93 Dec 22nd 2006

Just 20 more till a thousand!

Posted by joelephant Dec 22nd 2006

The edit is a cool theory, Andrew.

On jk rowling's site, it was hallows, so it's hallows, I really hope that we'll get an early release date. I REALLY hope that Harry doesn't die, that would be HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!, oh yea, just a few more till 1000

Posted by Faolan Dec 22nd 2006

I do like the idea that the Hallows are refering to Horcruxes, but I don't think JK will let it be that simple. Something to do with the veil is almost a given. I hope Harry sees Sirius again (and his folks) but gets to grow old with Ginny!

Omigosh I cant believe it I keep on repeting it over and over like "Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." And peopkle around me think I am INSANE! But wow guys! Think about it...it is just sooo sad ya know? This Is th e beginning of the END! No more HP after the Deathly Hallows. I can hardly like digest the fact that it...is...nearly...over. I mean this had been such an enormous part of all of our lives...the analyzing, the theorizing, the fanfics, the fanart, just the everything that we have been builiding up until now will either be shut down or brought forth in this final book. Good Lord. I can't get over it. We have been obsessing over this amazing amazing book for so long...for most of my life in fact! And now in little more than a year or two it'll be out...and it will all be over. Over. Fin. No More. No more analyzing and podcasting. Over. And just the thought of not feverishly checking Mugglenet or Leaky every five seconds or Waiting on tenterhooks for the next podcast...it is just sad you know? It's nearly done. And I think I will go to my corner and cry. And maybe after all the depression I will go reread all six books. And dudes, If I am so spastic about a TITLE...I will seriously be in trouble when I am holding that book in my hands...and then finishing it. Wow. It's almost over. One glimmer of hope though...It's not over just yet.

This is a most groovy gift from JKR. Although I must say it is a little anti-climatic. Then again I have never been blow away by a book title, no matter who the writer. I suppose I would ony be psyched if it were "Harry and Dinky beat up Voldypoo", but that probably wouldn't excite anyone else.

Posted by hpnerdsunited Dec 22nd 2006

I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED! I am telling the whole world so it gets around! I also think the title has to do with something like "deathly screams" because hallow can mean a holler. So does anyone think that this has to do with people dying during the avada kadavra curse?

Posted by Faolan Dec 22nd 2006

Diddy dinky voldypoo! I kinda like that one, too! Mrs Roonil Wazlib, didn't you do the exact same post at the begining of the comments section? I know exactly what you mean though, it's the begining of the end *sheds tear*. I don't want it to be over either. But at least there will always be fanfic.

Posted by Luxmbrg_Harry Dec 22nd 2006

The title's now everywhere in the news and on tv, that's so exciting, i hope the book release isn't too far away!

Posted by lizzybennet Dec 22nd 2006

"Deathly Hallows" I think it refers to the Horcruxes or it could refer to some sort of killing on Halloween.....hmmmm I guess we won't know 4 sure until we see the book. Oh, and the grammar's interesting

Posted by Whatfunny Dec 22nd 2006

This is such a great Christmas present!!!! Anyway, I think the title is creepy!! I think Deathly Hallow means: Deathly = James and Lily (maybe Dumbledore and even Sirius) and Hallows has got something to do with Godric's Hollow!! I don't know just guessing here!!! Can't wait to find out how the end of the series will be, even though that will be the end of it!! *cry*

Posted by erised_desire Dec 22nd 2006

Well, hallows means "To make or set apart as holy. To respect or honor greatly; revere. ". Everyone honors Harry greatly. To the point, sometimes, where I'm sure it's extreme. Lord Voldemort too, he has a lot of respect from a lot of people. He considers himself 'lord", and sets himself apart as holy. Deathly Voldemort maybe? Or Deathly Harry?

Posted by Pixel Dec 22nd 2006

For some reason... I found that title to be cheesy... No offense to JK, of course. I dunno, maybe I just have all this high expectations from her... Or maybe, the funny feeling I have is correct... Hmm... Anyway... I'll still buy the last book. I HAVE to know the ending!

Posted by mariathepirate Dec 22nd 2006
