EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Hallows: 1, to make or set apart as holy 2, to respect or honour greatly; revere 3, To make sacred by a religious rite: bless, consecrate, sanctify 4, and interestingly in a magic sense; 1, another name for halloween(one of the sabbat festivals) Could mean that Harry has to go beyond the veil

Thank you for posting this! I woke up to read this and I've never been more excited! I am not sure what to make of the title but it is intriguing and just makes me anticipate book 7 even more.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. I could used to it. PS, COS, POA, GOF, OOTP, HBP and TDH, the complete set.
Darn! Someone else got the saints idea before I did! I looked it up on Wikipedia, and Hallow's, as in All Hallow's Eve, is supposed to mean 'saint'. Does it mean that a bunch of good people are going to die? Or does it have something to do with the Hogwarts four? I can't wait to find out!

Right you are ylime. You know, this title actually gets me thinking of Sleepy Hollow. Maybe Harry's going to face of with the headless horseman, the final horcrux! Ichabod Crane pairs up with Harry Potter for the final battle...cause you know, Ichabod can fight in the magic world...or something... ...this is why Jo is a writer, and I'm not!
The difference between two titles was two consonants and a vowel, so that could mean one of the other titles she was struggling with was "Harry Potter and the Death Hollow" or "Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows". This book shall take its place among the other six, ss, cos, poa, gof, ootp, hbp, and finally TDH. Merry Christmas everyone!

Oooooh my Goooood! I've been laughing for half an hour now....! Just freaking out!! A friend told called me while I was walking my dog, and I just ran aaaall the way home.... And now my sister's calling me crazy...and I guess she's right.. But right now, crazy feels goooood! And for all norwegians out there, I think the title can be translated into "HP og de dødelige hellige/helgnene" Merry Christmas and "God Jul"!!!
I can just imagine Stephen Fry reading the title on the audio books :P It's the right title for the book! :D So happy!

"Deathly Hollows" has a nice spooky, ominous air about it. I like it.
Now that they released the title, does this mean that the 7-07-07 date is when the book will be released? My theory is that they would not release the title if the book wasn't going to be coming out in the 9 months.
I'm pretty sure she's referring to the Horcruxes. Hallows refer to the 'sacred' places/objects where Voldemort hid bits of his soul. And as we already saw, the first three were quite 'deathly' (the diary, the ring and the locket)

Its not referring to Godric's Hollow, its the Deathly Hallows. Hollow and Hallows are completely different words. The Deathly Hallows must be a new place that Harry must go, possible the place where the final battle with Voldemort will occur. My guess is Deadly Hallows = magical graveyard, possibly where the hogwarts' founders' bodies are buried or resting?

TO ALIRENE: that's Peeves you're seeing, knocking over the pencil-holder. Just can't wait till we get a release-date and read the final book. In the meantime it will be great to hear all the theories as long as people stop confusing hollows with hallows. MERRY X-MAS!!!!

hahaha Micah gets RESULTS!!! I'm excited for the book, but somehow I don't like the title, maybe it hasn't grown on me yet... in fact, my initial thought was "well, the American version will have a different name." I'm excited anyway!
