The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Harry Potter fanatics unite (and go absolutely crazy)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! Finally, finally! The title of book 7! I went on yahoo.com this morning and there it was, an article in which the title of book 7 was revealed! Well of course I was screaming inside my head, but being quite tired I did not let the rejoicing escape from within me. But don't worry, I will soon enough! Hmm..the deathly hallows...that sounds creepy. Gawd, I can't wait to get my paws on that booK!!!!!!!

Ok, I believe Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is just one of the three titles she had in mind. Perhaps she is giving them one by one to give us more insight. People are saying the DO NOT DISTURB sign is back on the door. This may mean she's giving us the two titles she is not using first and saving the actual title for the end. After all, it does not say anywhere on her website that Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows is the title for Book 7. This news was just inferred by Mugglenet. Obviously, this could be the actual title, but I'm hoping this is one she decided to throw out. I don't like it very much anyways. It's not like Jo. None of the other titles had such a blatantly ominous tone to them.

I can't believe that's the title.... I don't like it. But I CANNOT WAIT for the book to actually COME OUT!

Hallow refers to Halloween, which was originally Hallow's Eve. Hallow's Day is also known as All Saint's Day, or November 1. By referring to Hallow, JKR is probably referring to the events that happened on previous Halloweens, specifically Lily and James' deaths. While this did occur in Godric's Hollow (not Hallow), the similarity could point us in the right direction. We know that Harry, Ron, and Hermione are going to Godric's Hollow in the beginning of Book 7.

so HP7 = "Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows"in a nutshell this comes to mind:"What goes around comes around" as they say...so I think LV will EAT IT on Halloween Night. The night he started mucking about with HP & his family. At first I thought - oh ok, Hallows sounds like Godric's Hollow - makes sense - many of us have wondered if HP will run into LV there - where so much happened before...(I'm still hooked on the final duel being in the Love Room though, where HP will have obvious advantages over LV) but then... I remembered JKR's fave holiday is Halloween...aka Hallow's Eve - the same night LV murdered HP's parents and tried to kill HP and instead transferred LV's powers to HP ...in his chosing the so-called "Chosen One" so, i think this is a HUGE clue that LV will meet his end on Halloween Night by HP - Why? Well, a college professor i had had once talked about Shakespeare's life being symbolized as being a full & complete life simply because he died close to the date of his birth - mythology perhaps? & if this idea is deeply entrenched in mythology somewhere, like many Shakespeare stories have borrowed from, as has JKR drawn much from, i think? perhaps too, this circular idea/theory of something being final, complete, and whole, ending where something begins, resonates with JKR and will thus resonate in HP7? This title therefore being a strong (& final) clue that offing LV in this book will definitely happen and most completely at that?but oh good golly - if HP were to finish off LV on Oct. 31 in the story, that would mean the HP7 book would only span about 3 months? does this mean it could be as action packed and fast paced as the fun-read known as "The DaVinci Code"??? :) or better, too perhaps, HP could then go back to Hogwarts and finish his year 7 in school for himself! Scholastic could then still put "year 7" on the spines! This could also then "allow" JKR to keep up with her fabu standards of instilling lovely things like reading and education...

Posted by stardust88 Dec 21st 2006

HERE'S MY THEORY:: Jo had said that there is a graveyard at Hogwarts, but that we would not find out about it until later books (when they created the school in the movies she had told them they couldnt put something in a particular location because there was a graveyard there ..correct me if thats wrong because i cant remember the exact quote.. but i know she said there was a graveyard at hogwarts.) i DONT think that the graveyard she was talking about was the one from GOF... that one would have been near Tom Riddle Sr.'s manchine.. right? Could Deathly Hallows have anything to do with the Graveyard that we have yet to see???

Stardust - I think that is a very interesting idea and one that deserves more investigation. Will definitely be fun to reread and see what can be revealed now knowing the title. (I still think 10/31/07 will be the release date)

OMG, i speechless and still in shock, it hasn't quite sunk in yet, this is the first time i didn't find out ground-breaking news like this by myself on the internet and instead heard it on BBC news, while having dinner. Deathly Hallows, wow, it just gives you chills dunnit? No idea what it means though, but i'm sure i'll be enlightened through mugglecast and the deluge of editorials. i wonder why she didn't wait till xmas day, and also what our rewards for the WOMBAT tests are gonna be, i thought it would be the title. well i expect the release date of the book won't be far off now, lets hope.

Posted by phoenixfire1213 Dec 21st 2006

Posted by performingmonkey Dec 21st 2006

Yeah this is the real deal, people. 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' IS the title of book 7! As for it's meaning... PS/SS = item, CoS = place, PoA = person, GoF = item, OotP = people/group, HBP = person, DH = ...well, let's face it, it's not going to be figurative, it's either going to be a place or a group of dead people - the Deathly Hallows. It could refer to the long-dead founders of Hogwarts, or the ghosts (are we finally going to learn the truth about the Bloody Baron?). It could be the place beyond the Veil.

Posted by Kaitlynnn Dec 21st 2006

OMG!!!!!!!! THAT IS SOOO AWESOME!!! THAT JUST MADE MY DAY. I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW IT. THEN FREAKED OUT AND COULDN'T TELL MY SISTER CAUSE I KEPT FREAKING OUT. AHHHHH OMG. YAYY!!!!!

Posted by thats_nifty Dec 21st 2006

Ms. Rowling, thank you. Thank you for making this a wonderful, magnificent day. (Also, hallow can mean to honor something as holy, or to chase something with shouts and cries of “hallo!” or just to shout something according to Dictionary.com. All very interesting, especially when paired with 'deathly.')

Posted by 122476 Dec 21st 2006

so... harry should destroy or confront voldemort on halloween to come full circle???!!!

Posted by thats_nifty Dec 21st 2006

Oh, and good job, Micah! You rule!

I was so excited when I found out. They think I'm nuts at work for how excited I got. In the dictionary is says: To make or set apart as holy: CONSECRATE. 2. To honor or respect:REVERE. He is going to make Volemort human and Harry's going to have to use something very holy or pure to kill him. Any suggestions?

Posted by inomoreabouthpthnu Dec 21st 2006

Yea youre right, thats_nifty. Cause halloween, is also called All Hallow's Eve, Which Means All Holy's Eve. Cause the day after Halloween is All Saint's Day in the Catholic Church. So the Deathly Holy? Hmm..thats VERY interesting

Posted by Annalisse Dec 21st 2006

Yeah, it is the real deal. But do you know what's funny? I looked it up on Barnes and noble, and it says, AGE RANGE: 9-12. Hahaha.

Kudos to the person who caught the winter solstice reference in OotP. Obviously, JKR planned all along to reveal the title of Book 7 on the winter solstice! My theory is that Deathly Hallows refers to Halloween, and that it will not be hugely significant to the plot of the story. All dictionary definitions I looked up have "hallow" as a verb, and the only way "Hallows" appears as a noun is "All Hallows Eve," which is Halloween. "Deathly" means still, pale, ominous, or death-like, so I think the title refers to something ominous or spooky occurring on Halloween. Perhaps something to do with the anniversary of the Potters' death or some other Wizarding-world significance to Halloween that will be revealed in the book. Also, if I am correct and the title refers to Halloween, the Deathly Hallows will occur relatively early in the book; remember JKR's books usually run from June to May, so the Deathly Hallows' significance will be revealed in the first half of the book. I think the Deathly Hallows will be like the Goblet of Fire -- after the Triwizard champion selection, it was no longer significant to the plot of the book.

Posted by Dancer_1021 Dec 21st 2006

interesting. well im sure that that means Harry is going to die. Which i really dont want that to happen.

Posted by castpier Dec 21st 2006

So, I can't get in. My room with the door doesn't have the red and green bottles on the table. Why is that? In other news, I'm excited obviously. I have a bet going with one of my friends that the release date is NOT 7/7/07, but it looks like she might be right.... Uh oh!

Posted by inomoreabouthpthnu Dec 21st 2006

Very, Very Interesting theory, Joanovarq...I agree. Wow that really opened some things up. I was so excited about just knowing the title that i really didnt think about the total meaning. But i think youre prolly at least half right.

Posted by imapirateargg Dec 21st 2006

OMG I can't wait now! It's such a great title I mean it's just the perfect gift! I can't wait! Although I think that this might mean the end for Harry, I mean anything with the word death can't be good. :( But I'm soooooooo happy!!!!!!! :))))) Thank you Jo!

Posted by KTbell Dec 21st 2006

ok i went completly belistic when i saw the the title of book seven thing but then when i highlighted it i find this title really strange and sort of stupid!!!!!!

Posted by jana Dec 21st 2006

Wow I think it is a brilliant title, best Xmas present there is. But I do feel sad as well, this is the very last time we will have the excitement of having a HP title revealed to us. The Deathly Hallow? Perhaps it is the address at Spinners End where the Half Blood Prince lives…. Nah silly suggestion it probably has something to do with the Veil.
