EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Interesting discover Joanovarq, can you quote the text, or give me the gist of it? I'm surprised at the title, scared and a bit disoriented. Not what I expected in a title at all. I just want to read it now...
Okay I found out about this about 3 hours ago and I finally calmed down enough to post something. The title isn't appealing at first but then it's great. I don't think we should say Jo could have come up with a better title because we have no idea if this is the BEST tile for the book. We don't know what it's about yet, although alot of us are speculating and coming up with alot of theories. The only thing I have to complain about is MY FINGERNAILS! LOL I have bitten all of them off and even some skin cause I had no more nail to bite. I can't think of anything else to controll myself.
A comment about what people have been saying regarding the title in connection with Halloween: Yes, 'hallows' does have to do with Halloween, but it's not limited to that date. I doubt that the big showdown in the book will happen on Halloween because all the books cover about a year and the big climax is always near the end. I doubt that the BIG THING will happen early in the book, and I also doubt that Jo will have October/November be the end of the book. Also, Jo CAN'T have the book be released on 10/31/07, people. That's a school day and a school night. This is a children's book, and Jo is well aware that thousands of fans read the book straight through once they get it at midnight. I am perfectly willing to skip one day of school for Harry Potter and get in trouble for it afterwards, but Jo just wouldn't do it to us. It makes perfect sense that the book will be released next summer. Jo told us the title of HBP the Christmas before its summer release, so I bet DH will follow the same pattern.
Isn't "hallow" both a noun and a verb in Britain? We could be going about this all wrong...

Some sources, like Yahoo articles, say "hollows" instead of "hallows." I can see either one making sense, because of Godric's Hollow. I can't check it out myself because I can't seem to drag the key to get to the hangman game - I heard the Do Not Disturb sign is already back up so maybe that's why. Anyway, does anyone know which title is right?

As many have mentioned, title is anti-climatic. Although thrilled to death to hear this, it just seems like something with the word DEATH was bound to be in the title...publication date of 7/7/07 still seems a lil iffy since scholastic mentioned something about not wanting to shed limelight from one another since the film wil be out the same month...we'll see! OK people. The Potter's lived in Godic Hollow, the title of the next book is Deathly Hallows... They do sound alike, very different meanings. Still waiting Joanovarq...

WOW... I got this news kind of late because I actually was working this morning instead of surfing the net for Potter news (which I do every. day.) but AWWW YEAH!!! So many questions have I... Are The Deathly Hallows where the show wil go down btw Harry & Voldemort or Harry & TFPWSNBN? (Cause you know he's got it coming). Thinking about what Marlene said about the definition of "Hallows" being "holy person or saint", does this give a clue about Harry's possible death? Will he in fact die therefore becoming a Martyr and/or a saint? Does he go beyond the veil and find a way to use the power of wizards long gone? Is Voldemort trying to raise wizards from the dead and use their power for evil? I mean he's all "I ain't gonna die" why not try to bring wizards from the dead? I cannot wait to hear how long we'll still have to wait till the book comes out!!! WHOO HOO!!!!

Well she actually told us the title of HBP during the summer. Then it came out a year or so later during the following summer. So I dunno what that means for the 7th book. Does that mean that this one will come out during the winter break next year when there is no school? Or can it somehow be released during the summer like JK's camp told us originally? I dunno I'm just happy :) But I just realized that the eraser you click to open the door just takes you out of her office space, because you can see the gum wrappers, The Daily News newspaper, and the Rumours newspaper on the desk. I dunno if anyone has stated that before, but I just noticed.

haha I found out in a most unexpected way...my sis, she´s not even that much into hp, but she woke my up like "WAKE UP YOU SLEPT TOO MUCH! TITLE OF BOOK 7!"...I was like..."whaat" in a sleepy voice and thinking that she was mad cos Jo had updated her site just the other day, so it had to be a false alarm. but when she didn´t budge I was suddenly very awake.."OMG!!! WHICH IS IT???NO DON´T TELL ME I DON´T WANT TO KNOW!!" duh, lol, but of course she did tell me and duh I´m ranting... no good theory so far. But this titles does smell of...sacrifice. And for the good side. No good. AAAAAAAAAAAH

my first thought this morning was deathly hallows could be a place where voldermort is hiding at. it may have nothing to do with halloween at all.

This is so exciting!!!! My mind is still racing with all the new theories I've come up with!!!! One point I want to add is that didn't we hear that we would learn exactly how a person becomes a ghost in Book 7??? Since the title is kinda dark and foreshadows death I'm sure some ghost is going to show up. I like what someone said about 300 comments before me. Somehting about a trip to the underworld? That could be such a great story!!! And that would explain everything. The Sirus mirror thing, (which we know is going to turn up) and the ghost thing. And also, someone was saying that the book can't be put out at Halloween because they start with the beginning of Term I but Harry isn't going back to Hogwarts!!!!! Okay. Very long comment. Can't wait to hear the discussions to come!!!!!

WOW, im not sure if I like the title yet or not, half blood prince grew on me, im sure that this one will two. Hallow is pronounced HAL-O if any of you are wondering. this is great news, i have been a hp fan since the begining.

Not my favorite but its in my top ten for favorite Harry Potter book titles. I don't know what the hell a "Deathly Hallow" is but its probably got something to do with the horcruxes!

are any of you going to be sad when the books are at an end, like harry potter has alwas been with me since third grade. IM now in 10th grade, i will be very sad when the series comes to an end. any of you feel the same way?
So it's not only me.... People in here have been saying that they're not 100% convinced with the title, and neither am I, to be honest. The minute I heard "Order of the Phoenix" title, I totally adjusted to it. It was so easy to believe. The same with "Half-Blood Prince". But this title is so not what I imagined. There is a theory that JK will present to us the three titles she had in mind before she chooses one. Let's hope she does do that. And that theory came up because NOWHERE on JKR.com does it say that this is the title to Book 7, so let's just hope that this is true and that Jo is only fooling around with us again...
