Australian kids love Harry Potter
A recent poll conducted by Australia's largest bookseller Angus & Robertson asked over 23,000 Australian kids, aged 5-17, what their favorite books are. Harry Potter (of course) made the #1 spot. Of the top 50 most-voted-for books, 23 were by Australian writers. The poll coordinators were stunned to discover classics such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice were among the favorites.

Thanks to Damon, Book Basilisk and Joseph for the tip!

Posted by pen_magic May 15th 2006

Of course it was hp! We aussies know a good book when we see one ;P

Posted by phoenixsong09 May 15th 2006

Well, that's no surprise! Yay!!

Posted by weathermanR May 15th 2006

That is so cool, WOW!

Posted by weathermanR May 15th 2006

That is so cool, WOW!

Posted by Maheema May 15th 2006

Yep, not at all surprised. Funny how Ciaran put "Harry Potter (of course) won". If it weren't /that/ would be news.

Posted by Celebwen May 15th 2006

Umm... DUH! I laughed when I saw the heading for this one. Australian kids love Harry Potter? EVERYONE should love Harry Potter! But it's cool to hear about stuff like this. Especially if you live in Australia. Come to think of it... I want to go to Australia! Yeah. Definitely. Going to Australia now.

Posted by Illusions May 15th 2006

This doesn't surprise me one bit. Go HP. :D

Posted by Ethel May 15th 2006

It irks me how the people conducting the poll were 'surprised' to see 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and books similar to it in the list. It just shows how children are being underestimated and patronized even today. ¬__¬

Posted by robemsan May 15th 2006

Man, people here in my country think that reading classics is extremely "uncool". I really like this about the Australian kids.

Posted by AmateurAuthor May 15th 2006

I've read just about everything, well, getting into Stephen King books recently, but yeah, I like the austrian kids for liking Harry Potter. I wonder if J.K. Rowling ever thought her books would carry her this far along the road. Can't wait for book 7. =P

Posted by jota May 15th 2006

Hahaha thats so true, I'm from Sydney and I cant be f***ed to read anything else other than HP

Posted by christianaeg May 15th 2006

Coolness! GO AUSTRALIANS!! (even though i'm in th US...)

Posted by zacz May 15th 2006

And yet the release date for the OOTP movie is still two months behind everyone else. I read in a survey somewhere that a larger proportion of people (not just children) had read the potter book than in any other country.

Posted by slytherinprincess May 15th 2006

wow thats so cool !! but theres allways harry potter fans no matter where you go :D

Posted by daritzcwacka May 15th 2006

well obviously harry potter would win! but it's is rather surprising that in today's society teens enjoy books such as to kill a mockingbird so much. it's one of my favorites but it IS rather surprising...

Posted by arther7 May 15th 2006

I'm not very surprised considering how they counted all of the Harry Potter books as one whole thing.

Posted by sam_709 May 15th 2006

australian kids must be really cool if they like classics...not many people i know like classics AND harry potter...well, except me...

Posted by mischiefmaker_george May 15th 2006

itz obvious that potter is the best book.there is no doubt abt it.so the australians must b really cool!our potter is worth getting universal love isnt he??

Posted by Katie_Grint May 15th 2006

I love Harry Potter and all but, I absolutely adore To Kill A Mockingnird. I'm not surprised that Harry Potter won though. :]

Posted by GrangerGirl May 15th 2006

No suprises there!!!

Posted by Noodles May 15th 2006

Woot down under. I so wanna go there

Posted by Dani May 15th 2006

as much as i love hp its good to hear that classic books made that list as well...to kill a mockingbird is such a good book!

Posted by scurvy_cur May 15th 2006

wow that's great! and its also great to hear kids are not only reading excellent classics but loving them too!

Posted by Kadaj May 15th 2006

what a coincidence that the top three books were the biggest blockbuster movies of the year. NOT. The kids probably voted for those books because they saw the movies. I hope they actually read the books. Atleast the movies are encouraging some of them to read.

Posted by Mouse May 15th 2006

First, yay for HP! Second, with regard to To Kill a Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice: Yes, amazing that kids actually enjoy reading a good story, isn't it? It's so frustrating that adults seem incapable of the realization that kids do actually have brains and/or not everyone is constantly drooling after media stupidity! *mutter mutter* Anyway, good for the Australian kids!

Posted by pinktangerine May 15th 2006

It makes me so mad that people don't think kids read good books like To Kill a Mockingbird! That is a wonderful book! And DUH! was anyone suprised that Harry Potter won??? Yeah I didn't think so.

Posted by panic_method May 15th 2006

DUH!!!

Posted by jens May 15th 2006

of course!!

Posted by LadyArwen06 May 15th 2006

Its not really a fair survey really i mean it is but less known books dont have a chance against HP now they should conduct a survey where HP isnt an option (just my opinion)

Posted by iloveCedric May 15th 2006

yay!! i'm not really surprised HP made number 1. i'm a little upset Catcher in the Rye didn't make it. i love that book.

Posted by FaithInSnape May 15th 2006

I'm not surprised Harry Potter made #1. It's an awesome series. Of course, I'm speaking as a fan myself, but still...lol. Oh, I'm also not surprised that "To Kill A Mockingbird" was on the list, it's an awesome book as well. :)

Posted by carrot_top May 15th 2006

go hp!why were they stunned to see 'to kill a mockingbird' on the list?i love that book and always will(just like hp)!:)

Posted by ginny_weasley May 15th 2006

WOW!!!! cool! harry potter rules the world!

Posted by remylefay May 15th 2006

go hp! ppl all around the world recognize its awesomeness!

Posted by pygmy_puff May 15th 2006

Obviously!my cousins are australian and they love hp(well the older 2 anyway!)it's cool about "To Kill a Mockingbird" as well,I think it's so good!(",)

Posted by lady_eowyn May 15th 2006

I'm not too surprised about HP being at the top, but wow! 23 Australian authors out of 50? Must go check out some of those books...

Posted by Flannychan May 15th 2006

They should do that in the Netherlands... I think Harry Potter would be one of three books from non-Dutch writers. Funny to see that the Aussies love HP so much and they get the movies ages after we do. I feel pity for them.

Posted by arther7 May 15th 2006

I read part of To kill a mockingbird and it was soooooooo booooooooooorrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg!!!!!!! I'm not surprised that Harry Potter was at the top though:)

Posted by GinnyPotter May 15th 2006

yea...Australian kids are pretty beastly

Posted by Rainbow May 15th 2006

I had to read "To Kill a Mockingbird" for my english exam in the summer, it was actually pretty good, but it starts off being really confusing.

Posted by Potterfanatic May 15th 2006

To Kill a Mockingbird was one of the only good books that i have ever read in school and it sure beats Great Expectations i despise charles dickens works but yeah GO HP and to think if it wasnt for my aunt and my elementary teacher i wouldnt even be into these books

Posted by felena90 May 15th 2006

Cool news :))) Well, of course, HP got the first place - who could have doubted - and who wouldn't give it the first place? ;) But really good to hear people are still reading something - like Jane Austen, e.g., a huge fan of hers, as well, as of Jo's :) Just great. And... need to try something by Australian authors, haven't read anything... So far ;)

Posted by Ctgate12 May 15th 2006

I LOVE Pride and Prejudice!!!!!!!

Posted by veelagirl May 15th 2006

Cool!!!!!!!!! It's awesome that there are so many readers out there (not that I didn't know that, I mean look at all of the fan sites)!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by smurff May 15th 2006

lol I actually love the title of this. "Australian kids love Harry Potter"? ALL kids love harry potter. pah. i dunno, just an odd statement.

Posted by Kaleygurl May 15th 2006

That's cool...but kids in other countries like Harry Potter too! Like us kids ((well...teens...or whatever)) in the USA!! ...well...me anyway...lol

Posted by Luna May 15th 2006

I suppose that Aussies have good taste in books. I wonder what Americans would vote for. Seeing as though most poeple that I know don't like Harry Potter, maybe it would be The Cronicles of Narnia of something.
