Harry Potter owns all... But why are all you guys making such a big deal about it beating the bible, not everyone believes in that, some people don't believe in god and some follow other religions. The bible, as important as it may be just cannot appeal to everyone, and literature such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Ring can just be enjoyed by more people.

the bible is a book you can't live without it? don't make me laugh, that piece of trash, one of the best lie ever created. the thing is that lord of the ring and harry potter are fictions and sold in that idea. the bible is one of the only books which is a fiction sold like reality and people are stupid enough to believe it's true. if the bible was a fictional book, noone would be interested in it. you believe of all hp stuff? no, of course... then why do you all believe the nonsense things shown as "miracle" in that "sacred" book? seeing that stupid book in that top makes me sick, and to think we're in the 21th century... 2000 years of lies... 2000 years of mankind foolish enough to believe... perhaps their own existence is so bad they want to put the shame on someone else... someone they believe in, God... powerful being who never move is godly ass to help someone... oh perhaps because.... it's just in your minds guys.

Posted by i_loverz_HP Mar 1st 2007

OMG benmanu- keep that to yourself seriously. oh and if it is such a lie then why would so many people believe in it. where do you think the world came from wait let me guess are going to say evolution wow what a weak answer!!! and if you hate the bible so much dont bring it up.....thats so rediciouls how the bible is on there but you have to say all these crap about but when how to kill a mocking bird is on there nope not one word said but then again you say they are both fictional. you hate it that much you have to write a whole freakin paragraph wow LAME!!!! sorry to say. but thats just sad.

Posted by Susan_Bones Mar 1st 2007

benmanu, if your not a chistian, fine, but please don't go bashing someone elses religion.

Posted by july21tillhp7 Mar 1st 2007

ben, i'de say tons of horrible thing about u that would make u cry, but since i dont wanta get banned i wont... BIBLE IS #1!! HP IS #2!!

Posted by july21tillhp7 Mar 1st 2007

ALSO IM HEADING TO BEAD NOW SO WATEVER TRASH U GOTA SAY ABOUT ME I DONT CARE =P also eragon should be up there!! and i think harry potter books are much better then lord of the rings! they bored me to sleep, thogh the movies were good!! LONG LIVE THE BIBLE AND HARRY POTTER :)

Posted by i_loverz_HP Mar 1st 2007

HARRY POTTER HERE I CAME!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU HARRY AND DRACO!!! GOODNIGHT UT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by dougthewhale Mar 1st 2007

Wow I've never posted on here before but I liked the list alot. Are people still debating about the Bible thing? I wish it would have been first but understand why its not, I mean the poll is taken at a time when Harry Potter hype is at its greatest right? Take another poll in two thousand years where will he be on the list compared to the Bible? Still I love the books and the Bible at the same time and am a little upset with all the debates and rude comments I've been reading from both Christians and Harry Potter fans. Just wanted to say that, and I wish Count of Monte Cristo had made the list, I'd probably put that way high up.

Posted by Susan_Bones Mar 1st 2007

dougthewhale, the debating on the bible thing went down a while ago but it seems to be starting again...

Susan Bones thanks for the heads up, I kind of hoped that thing had died down.

Posted by Araminta Mar 1st 2007

Benmanu: As an atheist and agnostic, I'm ashamed of your comments. If you want to "show people the light," the proper way to do it is to calmly and courteously present the reasons for your stance. To hatefully deride people as you have done serves only to further convince them of the accuracy of the common conception that atheists are rude, spiteful, and bitter. By acting as you did, you're ruining the chances of Christians ever taking our position seriously.

Posted by tkoko Mar 1st 2007

Yeah it's cool that it did so well. Having it beat the bible is something, but I don't know, some people get more out of the religeon spiritually than by reading. Cheers

Posted by ej020506 Mar 2nd 2007

once, while reding da vinci's code, i came upon a dialogue where it says that Langdon's book could have rivaled the bestseller of all time...he asked: the bible? his editor replied: no, harry potter....this is amusing =) but it is sad that the bible is only top 5, and that the four books beat it in becoming the topmost book a person cant live without...call me a hypocrite or something (coz ive only read genesis and the 4 gospels), but i still believe that the bible should have been the first.

oh fasho

Posted by Roonil Mar 2nd 2007

Aw come on, I need HP a lot more than Pride and Prejudice... ah well. That's hella awesome though! Yay!

Posted by Siebensprung Mar 2nd 2007

This is just a result for the UK and IRL, not Europe or the whole world. Don´t forget that. The UK is NOT the Centre of the Earth!

Posted by Siebensprung Mar 2nd 2007

It doesn´t beat the Bible worldwide just in UK . So what is your problem all of you guys who defend such a brainless list of some english books? This list represents not the ideas of the people in all over the world. It just shows us how low the level of cultural education in the UK must be, nothing else.

Posted by MikeB Mar 2nd 2007

Siebensprung - German? And no, the U.S.A. being the one single first-world country with least people accepting science, evolution and cosmology and the most people of all first world countries believing that the bible is litterally true, I'm sure the bible tops pretty much everything in the U.S.A. Araminta, I have to agree mostly. But there's no need for us atheists to take bashing over bashing and keeping criticism to ourself - sure, it's about how you present it, but being not only an atheist, but also a man of science and a student of philosophy, let me present quote: "Celebrate and defend naturalism to its limits, respect those who see differently beyond the limits of foreseeable experiments, and don't let anyone get away with superstitions that intrude on the results of experimentally accessible questions. Unobtrusive superstitions, when held by others, are not trampled by polite, respectful people. That's the very heart of being respectful and polite." I think it's perfectly alright to point out logical fallacies, contradictions and impossibilities in religious belief. Something logically contradictory simply cannot be true... (to be continued)

Posted by Siebensprung Mar 2nd 2007

Amen, MikeB 12. Have a worldwide power day, best regards. In genrel! The list is crap, absolutely not representative!!!!!!!!!! Check out the website, guys. 2000 people voted, ONLY 2000 people. I´m laughing sardonically at all of you who believe in fairytales and overestimate the HP place 4 on a pure commercial voting-website for the UK and Ireland. Awake all you self-loving HP fans who don´t want to see the reality. If 2000 people in UK and IRL voted for the HP books it doesn´t say anything! Well, I like the HP books, too. But I still live in the real world, not in illusions aroused by dreamers like some of you.

Posted by MikeB Mar 2nd 2007

i_loverz_HP, you've just made it clear beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are just as hateful, ignorant and arrogant as benmanu, if not worse. Yes, science can explain how the universe, the world, life and even consciousness came to be (that's my field of studies btw). You obviously don't know a thing about evolution, sorry. Evolution does not explain how the world came to be, that's simple cosmology, physics. Evolution explains how life and the diversity of species came to be. And cognitive sciences, most prominently neuroscience attempt to explain how consciousness work. And without meaning to be rude, the thing is: Religion can't explain anything. Saying that something was a miracle or that a supernatural power created it is not an explanation, only an expression of our lack of knowledge. Go back one-thousand years and people would tell you that a lightning is a miracle, an expression of God's anger. Today we know that it's asymmetrical charge-states between ground and clouds leading to a discharge which is the flow of electrons. We can explain every micro-event in a lighning perfectly. That's what a real explanation is: A statement or set of statements linking phenomena to their causes and giving rules how the process happens. And when it comes to natural phenomena, an explanation must conform to the principle of being falsifyable if wrong. Life, the universe and earth are certainly empirical, therefor explanations as to how they came to be have to be scientific to be of any value. Now this is not bashing religion - if it makes people happy, let them have it, I don't object as long as it doesn't lead to violence or intolerance, I just won't let -as the above quote was meant to show- let superstition intrude on explanations to perfectly observable phenomena, since superstitions are not only of no value there, they hinder scientific progress and advance ignorance. Galileo, anyone?

HIS DARK MATERIALS FOR THE WINZ0RZ! *spazzes* Oh, oh... and HP too, of course. D: ..................LYRA FOR PREZ. Sorry. Goddamn I'm excited for the movie.

Posted by Quiscalus Mar 2nd 2007

Everyone who is in the UT: we need somewhere else to talk other than the comment board! What do you guys suggest? Meh, and the time zone thing gets in the way too. :D

Posted by godot Mar 2nd 2007

In response to the Bible being behind HP. It's been brought up before in this thread, but I thought as a British Athiest I should make the point again. Religion in the UK just doesn't have the same impact as it does in the US. I know of only a couple of people who go to church regularly, nearly all my friends are Agnostics. If I & my friends are any indication, thats why the Bible is so far down the list, as it just isn't relevant in our British lives. It would be interesting to see a US version of this list though. I've taken this info off the internet: The Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan periodically conducts the World Values Survey. It polls a statistically valid sample of adults from a total of 60 nations. In their their 1995-1997 survey, the found that: 16% of the British adult population consider religion to be very important in their lives. 53% in the U.S., 14% in France, and 13% in Germany agreed.

Posted by MikeB Mar 2nd 2007

godot - that's what I was saying a few posts ago, and to be honest - that's one reason why I like living in Germany, among (of course) the cultural treasures of all the great composers from Bach to Schönberg, all the great poets and writers from Goethe to Kafka and all the great Philosophers from Kant to Nietzsche to Habermas... anyway, nice name, wonderful play. So I take it everybody is always waiting for you but you never show up? :) P.S.: Did you know that there are more Harry Potter books per thousand people in Germany than in any other country? - I find this amusing, and uplifting of sorts.
