Rumor: UK 'Deathly Hallows' 608 pages
British book chain Waterstone's is currently listing Deathly Hallows on their website as having 608 pages. If correct, this would make the US edition around 688 pages long.

However, it should be noted that the site also lists Half-Blood Prince with 608 pages, so Waterstone's could simply be using that page count as an estimate for Deathly Hallows. In addition, generally this type of information is released to the public (via JKRowling.com or her publishers) first.

Please consider this very much a rumor for now, and we will update you with more information as soon as possible.

Thanks to Tom for the heads-up!

ill be disappointed if it isnt longer. even GOF was 734 pages long. comone JK! we can handle it! =]

Posted by performingmonkey Mar 19th 2007

Please pay no attention to this page count. It's just a placeholder. There's no way they could know the final page count yet. Also, I think we can assume it's going to be longer than HBP. Remember Jo commented on how things were taking more chapters than she first thought.

That would suck. I hope it's 1,000 pages!!! 688 or whatever won't keep me reading for long. Gah. And there's no way she can fit everything in that few pages... Hope it's a rumor!

Posted by hermione28 Mar 19th 2007

I want it to be longer then 608 pages! thats wat too short!

Posted by dragons_melody Mar 19th 2007

688 for u.s not long enough for me unless its absolutely amazing , which is going to happen , ok i know i contradicted myself SO WHAT .

Posted by Jadore_Bella Mar 19th 2007

688 PAGES? THAT'S IT? So, basically, my life will end after only 688 pages? BTW why is the US version 80 pages more?

Posted by 62442 Mar 19th 2007

ONLY! 688 pages, I NEED more than 608 pages! ?I want this one to take more then a day, even if i dont put it down until i finish! like how about 62,442 pages! Tehn the pages would spell magic! and take me roughly 2 whole weeks to read! And why is the American eddition longer? Do Americans get bigger print or soemthing, which makes no sense because we(Americans) aree just as capable of reding small print.

Posted by dumbeldoreISdead Mar 19th 2007

actually whoever said that the cover is out before the page # is incorrect well for HBP at least if you look at the news archives, the page number for HBP was released in februrary if im not mistake(2 months after release date) and the cover was released march 8(2 1/2 months after release date)

Posted by i_loverz_HP Mar 19th 2007

OMG thats is sooo short i want it to be so long that my eyes fall out from reading it so much.....grrrr i wish it was like 1000 pages.....AHHH well whatever just as long as i get to read it right when it comes out..... its the last book man you gotta savor the flavor!!!!!

Posted by smarisian Mar 19th 2007

Stupid questions... Why is the American version always longer? Don't we speak English? Why can't we have the original words as JK put them down? Or is it just the choice of font or something? Whatever. I for one am very excited about #7.

"How are they supposed to know yet? I mean, according to what Jo's said, it sounds like they have just started editing it, so how can they possibly have a page count already? Wouldn't the page count depend on what they do while editing? SarahtheBeansprout is right, how does the US edition end up 80 pages longer? Do they use a bigger font so the stupid Americans have an easier time reading? And about Americans being stupid, that is a joke people! I am an American, and while I can testify that some Americans are stupid, the stupid Americans don't read Harry Potter, only the smart Americans." I agree with this statement. Why would the american version be significantly longer?

Posted by Iteka Mar 19th 2007

As stated earlier in these comments, the US version is longer for a number of reasons. 1) The font size is slightly larger (only slightly). 2) Each chapter has chapter art, and as thus the chapter commences half way down the page. 3) The margins are wider on each page (thus creating more whitespace) and 4) The spacing between each line is greater than in the British version. All of those help to push the US version to a decidedly longer length. Both versions tell the same story, in the same order. They are exactly the same (minus a few word changes), it is just that the formatting of each page differs between each version. The same happens when a book receives a new print run. It's not unusual to have five or more copies of the one book that have a different number of total pages. They won't differ by much, but if you need the page numbers because you are studying it in school, it can get annoying if you have a different version of the book.

thats good, at least we have a estimate, but i definatley want it to be at least 50-200 pgs longer than the order of the phoeni book! but either way, i would still read it, even if its like 1,500 pgs, i dont mind, more pages, more things happen. i think for the very last book, i think jk would want it to be the longest, ieven if it is by just 1 pg. alot of stuff have to be in this book, or else jo's gonna have to write 8th book!

Posted by Quiscalus Mar 20th 2007

Too short! I hope this is wrong...

Posted by lisa_dee Mar 20th 2007

Aw, I expected to be longer, lol. Say about 800 pages?

Posted by ninja58 Mar 20th 2007

Hope it's a rumor. I want it to be at leat longer than GoF.

Posted by Frey Mar 20th 2007

HarryLatino.com says that Bloomsbury has denied this rumour. Bloomsbury say that they haven't release the info yet, so Waterstones has probably copied page number from Half-Blood Prince.

Posted by Northern_light Mar 20th 2007

ellopoppet7hp, you do not want the book to be 999,999,999,999,999 pages ;) The Bible, in the version that I own, has 1520 very thin pages and is about 3cm thick (without the cover). That would make a book with 999,999,999,999,999 pages of the same thickness almost 20 million kilometers thick, more than 51 times the distance to the moon! Also, even if you could read one page in a second, it would take you over 31 million years to read it. Sorry, I know you didn't mean it literally, I just couldn't resist... ;)

Oooh, I´m disappointed, I wanted it to be so much longer!!!! I won´t want it to end! Hopefully it´s just a rumour...

Posted by Nimue Mar 20th 2007

This is fair as an estimate. My speculation is that 'Deathly Hallows' will end up a length between HBP and OoTP. Any longer and I'll have serious doubts about whether JKR's editors are doing their jobs. There might be a lot to say, but the important thing is how it is said, not how many pages it takes to say it - OoTP was a joke when it came to length over quality.

Posted by cedarbluff Mar 20th 2007

it better be longer than 608 or 688 or whatever!!

Posted by king_snape Mar 20th 2007

i bet i will be around 784 pages!

Posted by snapefan4 Mar 22nd 2007

Yeah! My guess on the reason for the US version being longer was right and it's a lot of fun being right!

Posted by july21tillhp7 Mar 27th 2007
