Official Concept Art:
Hogwarts | Hogsmeade | Owl's View of Park | Logo

Latest Developments (10 AM EST):
- Official park website now open; visitors can sign up for e-mail updates.
- JK Rowling: "The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed."

Universal Studios and Warner Brothers made a joint announcement this evening from Leavesden Studios on the set of Dumbledore's Office to reveal that a Harry Potter theme park is currently in development. The image to the left is the first piece of concept art for the park: Hogsmeade Village.

Here's what we learned from Potter set designer Stuart Craig and a representative from Universal Studios (both of them hosted the big reveal):

- "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort"
- Announcement was made live via internet at 12:01 AM EST today to select media, including MuggleNet.
- Areas of park to include Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Castle, and the Forbidden Forest.
- 20 engineers working on project.
- Universal came to WB looking for authenticity.
- Potter park to be built in "Islands of Adventure" area of Universal.
- Stuart wants to "take his grandchildren" to the park.
- Opening early 2010.
- Universal's Potter website to be available at this link.
- JK Rowling has been involved "since the very beginning" of the project. Also "supportive and encouraging."
- Stuart thinks that the park will be better off in the United States.
- Have been in design "for at least a year and a half."
- "Important that the theme park represents the entire saga from Book 1 to Book 7"

In a rather cute way to end the announcement, the Universal representative asks Stuart Craig, "Now where's Dumbledore?" Stuart paused for a moment, looked around the office, and replied, "He was just here."

We'll be discussing these developments on this week's episode of MuggleCast (due out over the weekend). This post will be updated frequently as we learn more!

Whoa, I think this is a brilliant idea!! The world of harry potter will still be around after the last book is out. Not that it wouldn´t be anyway but you get my point. I really really want to visit that place. I´m just wondering whether Jo has anything against the idea to have the park in usa??? Maybe they have it there cause they think it will be better for the business...

I am disappointed in all of you who insist in being negative about something at all costs. The movies didn't ruin the books, the theme park won't ruin the books, yes it's hot in Florida but tourism to support a park would not happen in Scotland. Profit is not a dirty word, the US is not perfect but neither is the UK. Be happy that there is going to be a Hogswart Castle somewhere in the world to visit and they put it in the place with the most likelihood of success. This is a hugely expensive proposition and investment and it has to pay off. It won't have everything, just like the movies don't, but accept it for what it is . Besides those drawings look incredible - how can one not be excited?

Thank you Agnes! Harry = English JKR = English Books = what was it again? Oh yeh! ENGLISH! Plus, if you think about it, JKR could build one herself, then it would be exactly how she'd imagined the "Magical World" when she first wrote the Philosophers Stone...rather than how WB imagined it - which is still good, by the way, just not as authentic as JKR's own theme park would be!

Oh my gos this is SO COOL!! Ahhh I can't wait for 2010 to go and see it!!!! This is what I love about Harry Potter! There is always something to look forward too!! Oh I can't Wait!!!

Honestly, all the people saying it shouldn't be in America.... It will be a TOURIST ATTRACTION. It belongs in a TOURISM CITY. More people will visit Orlando to go to Universal, Disney, Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove, the beach, etc. Putting it in Britain, they can't only have this, because it'd be way too much money for families to shell out on plane tickets, hotels, entrance to the park, food, etc. Putting it in Orlando, families have more of an incentive, because they can stay here for cheaper, and see everything at once. More fans can visit it in Orlando, and that is the bottom line. People are too quick to judge how it will turn out because it is in Florida. Is it really the temperature that makes Harry Potter a great book and movie series? No. It's the magic. The only company that could probably make this better is Disney. Universal is great at making everything look amazing. People think it all just appeared, but no, it was built by engineers who want to make something look amazing. Dueling Dragons in Islands of Adventure is a great example of this. If you have ridden that, you can see the work, the detail that was put into constructing just the queue lines. This park will turn out fantastic, because there is too much on the line to not be.

OMG I am too excited! I think I may have to extend my college program with Disney by 2.5 years so i can be there when it opens!!! I still wish it was Disney doing the project...but needless to say it should still be awesome! Florida is an awesome tourist destination...esp with WDW being the #1 spot, this is sure to get tons of tourists to the area. Can't wait!

Posted by hpwiz812 Jun 1st 2007

i live like 3 hours away, abd i basically go every weekend up there to visit my cousins who btw, live like 20 minutes away from the park....IM SO THERE!!!!!! and i have an annual pass....PERFECT!!!! XD

Anyone else lost all respect for JK Rowling? The money I spend on the 7th book will be the last the Harry Potter franchise ever gets from me.

Posted by smellysocks Jun 1st 2007

OMG the amount of comments! :) As to losing respect for JK- I dont think so, she wants to give all HP fans the opportunity to experience what we, as in HP fans have fantasised about since reading the first book actually being IN HP land! It excites my imagination, i think it will be really cool!! and no I'm not naive it's a profit thing as well but so is most things in life! Cant wait to go and see it!! :)

Posted by smellysocks Jun 1st 2007

Just to add as well, Yes i'm disappointed it isn't in Britain, but i dont think we would have down it justice and can i just say that Harry Potter is a British book with all different nationality's from Great Britain and not just an English book, thank you! :)

Posted by ginaforpeace Jun 1st 2007

As for me, I can't wait. I'm planning on moving to Florida in the future anyways. The pictures of what it may look like look awesome. I wonder if any of the stars and/or JK Rowlings would ever make a visit.

Posted by ginaforpeace Jun 1st 2007

I would definitely try to get a part-time nights & weekend job there as well. I already have a day job.

Posted by lilbecky8 Jun 1st 2007

Responding to a comment made by Biddy earlier... Have you ever been to Florida? Yes it gets really hot there in the summer, but it also rains. Yeah May-Aug its super sunny, but in the winter time, it gets cool and they have cloudy rainy days too. Have you ever been to Disney World or Universal? They do a great job of theming the different lands and there ARENT palm trees everywhere. At Universal if you go to the Jurassic Park area there are tons of trees and theming, you dont definitely dont feel like you are in the middle of Florida. And when was the last time you saw an Owl flying around in the middle of the day? Have you ever heard about the book and movie Hoot? (I am not sure if it was released in the Britain) Its based on a true story about two FLORIDA boys trying to save some owls that live in FLORIDA. Dont be so quick to tear down Florida just because you are disappointed. Yeah I can totally understand why Britons are sad that this wont be Britain, but it wont be ruined just because its in America. Maybe if it takes off in the US they will add one in Britain... like Euro Disney. :-)

Posted by cows_in_wonderland Jun 1st 2007

I agree with everybody who is excited. Can't wait. Will be there on opening day and will be there for a week. Awesome!

Posted by marauder7 Jun 1st 2007

THIS IS THE GREATEST NEWS EVER!!! im sooo excited and im deffinatly going once it opens...and living there

Posted by FLHPFan Jun 1st 2007

Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure are definitely the right people to build the Harry Potter park. I have been there tons of times since I live only an hour away and they have done an amazing job on the islands they have already(such as Seuss Landing). With the whole location thing, my opinion is that they would want to build it in a tourist area. Since Orlando is known as the biggest tourist spot in the world, then that would probably be the most ideal place to build it because more people will have access to it. And I know that some people are saying that there needs to be trees and mountains around the area, etc. but the thing is, they are just focusing on Hogwarts and a couple areas around it, not Scotland itself.

Lose respect for J.K Rowling? NEVER. That would only happen if she decided not to give us book 7! She is wonderful, the theme park is not about the money for her, its about making the wizarding world become real and magical for her fans, Harry's fans. Its a step closer to immersing youself in the books, we can experience it.

Posted by jenny0731 Jun 1st 2007

OMG I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED ABOUT THIS PARK. I HEARD RUMORS ABOUT IT BUT I DIDN'T THINK THEY'D DO IT. I AM TOTALLY GOING TO SEE IT OPENING DAY. Are all the people complaining on here five years old? Wake up to the real world when you get done with your dreamed up Utopian society. The world is about making money. Rowling makes a ton of money off the books, a ton of money off the movies, and now a ton of money of a theme park. Sure she has a love for storytelling, but are you telling me that if you had an idea that was going to make you millions and millions of dollars, you would say "no thank you. I do it for the love of it". Get real. It's unfortunate that it is not in Britain, but come on. You cannot even compare the amount of money they would make off it being in Florida to it being in Britain. It's not even close and money is what drives our world. Maybe it's not right, but it's the way it is and Rowling is not stupid. If you feel it is too commercial then simply don't watch the movies and don't go to the theme park. Enjoy the books and let others choose what suits them. Or you can write Jo and ask her to build one in Britain. But something tells me she's thinking, "Hmm, spend millions of my own money or have these people pay me to build my world for me". You do the math.

Posted by greenphoenix Jun 2nd 2007

Ugh. I realise everyone on here will flame me because they would never hear a word against Jo even if it was revealed that she's a serial killer but this is so unbelievably tacky. This relegates Harry Potter to the status of cheesy children's entertainment (in the manner of Disney) rather than the great works of literature that they are. I am disappointed in JK Rowling for selling out, compromising the integrity of her books and turning her works of art into something that's just a product and has the sole purpose of squeezing as much money as possible out of the mindless American public.

Posted by caaarls Jun 2nd 2007

wow i am sooo excited! i'm definantly gonna go! :O)

Posted by Brophie Jun 2nd 2007

Hurrah! Harry's safe! No one is going to kill off the hero and then build a theme park around him.

Posted by Biddy Jun 2nd 2007

mrs_weasley says: "Europe can't make their own park because America has wayyy more money! " Does anyone else realise why this sort of remark is what makes the US so very disliked across the rest of the world? The need to consume, and to consume in ever greater amounts, whilst rubbing the noses of poorer nations in their perceived less affluent status is obnoxious and offensive. I personally resent this theme park being built in Orlando, because the books are very much set in the UK. The writer, the characters, the surroundings, the weather and the very ethos is British. To set it in a sizzling hot, far part of the world, where US commercialism is at its most fervent and intimidating goes against everything the Harry Potter World is about. It's British, not American. JK Rowling has sold her soul, and I expect she'll be expected to account for this. Very bad show. I would be embarrassed to visit this park.

Posted by Biddy Jun 2nd 2007

Oh, and yes, I have visited Disney World in Florida, every January for the past seven years. We spend a fortnight in Fort Wilderness, if you must know. It's always, always hot. By British standards, it's extremely hot.

Posted by gryffindor_phoenix Jun 2nd 2007

I don't know what I think of this. It could end up being absolutely amazing or completely tacky which will cheapen the entire series. It all depends on how it's presented. But I don't think Jo will stand for the world she's spent more than a decase creating being turned into a cheap, tacky excuse for a theme park. So it could end up being truly amazing. The idea that she's been involved in the concept of the park and the fact that it looks like it'll be based off the books more than the movies comforts me greatly. Also, I seem to remember that when this came up as rumor several times in the past year, everyone thought it was a horrible idea. But now that it's confirmed everyone's jumping on the bandwagon. Don't know what changed everyone's minds.

now that we got a theme park... when r they gunna start with the ACTUAL school?! = D

Posted by HPFANTimothy Jun 3rd 2007

I AGREE WITH PEOPLE SAYING THAT IT SHOULD BE IN THE UK! ONCE AGAIN THE U.S DEMONSTARTE THAT THEY SHOULD GET EVERYTHING. OF COURSE THE AMERICAN HP FAN'S ARE SAYING THAT THEY AGREE WITH IT BEING IN AMERICA..... THEY ARE "AMERICAN" AFTER ALL. FAR OUT! I LIVE IN MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA, BUT I CAN ARGUE TOO BECAUSE I'M ORIGINALLY FROM LONDON. WHY MUST THE U.S GET EVERYTHING? BIG DEAL! 'TOURIST ATTRACTION.' THERE'LL BE JUST AS MUCH 'TOURIST ATTRACTION' IF IT'S BEING BUILT IN THE UK!

Posted by HPFANTimothy Jun 3rd 2007

WAIT A SECOND... This defeats the purpose of our beloved books! Never again will people talk about the sitting down in bed and having a good old read of a Harry Potter book, most of them'll think about the theme Park. Ohhh, how could JKR sell? =[ And I agree with the person who said 'this is just something to squeeze the money out of the mindless American public.'

Posted by Draigfire Jun 3rd 2007

To Biddy: You seem so far off topic....Whats up? Warner Brothers has produced the movies with American money paying the salaries of all those British actors and extras and crew, bringing a lot of work to the British Isles and it's people...all of that is a good thing...Warner Brothers and J K Rowling think it should be in Orlando. I personally am insulted by your sweeping assessment of why America is "disliked" the correct question is why are other countries so "jealous". It sounds to me you are a Disney fan and your just a bit upset that Disney lost out to Universal. I don't understand your hostility, what has America done to you personally? I happen to think America is a wonderful country. I think England is a wonderful country, Why is there a contest? Harry Potter's Theme Park is a dream come true for so many people, who cares where it's built! If you don't like it fine, don't go. Why rain on every ones parade?

Posted by evil_1 Jun 3rd 2007

*high pitched scream* i cant wait till its built.. ill hav to fly half way around the world to get there.. but still!!. rock on slytherin

Posted by magicgirl_rulz_4eva Jun 3rd 2007

I've always hoped that they'd have a harry potter theme park, but... NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! MAKE IT IN THE UK!! (Now i wont be going if its in the US)
