Latest Developments (10 AM EST):
- Official park website now open; visitors can sign up for e-mail updates.
- JK Rowling: "The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed."

Universal Studios and Warner Brothers made a joint announcement this evening from Leavesden Studios on the set of Dumbledore's Office to reveal that a Harry Potter theme park is currently in development. The image to the left is the first piece of concept art for the park: Hogsmeade Village.

Here's what we learned from Potter set designer Stuart Craig and a representative from Universal Studios (both of them hosted the big reveal):

- "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort"
- Announcement was made live via internet at 12:01 AM EST today to select media, including MuggleNet.
- Areas of park to include Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Castle, and the Forbidden Forest.
- 20 engineers working on project.
- Universal came to WB looking for authenticity.
- Potter park to be built in "Islands of Adventure" area of Universal.
- Stuart wants to "take his grandchildren" to the park.
- Opening early 2010.
- Universal's Potter website to be available at this link.
- JK Rowling has been involved "since the very beginning" of the project. Also "supportive and encouraging."
- Stuart thinks that the park will be better off in the United States.
- Have been in design "for at least a year and a half."
- "Important that the theme park represents the entire saga from Book 1 to Book 7"

In a rather cute way to end the announcement, the Universal representative asks Stuart Craig, "Now where's Dumbledore?" Stuart paused for a moment, looked around the office, and replied, "He was just here."

We'll be discussing these developments on this week's episode of MuggleCast (due out over the weekend). This post will be updated frequently as we learn more!

Milking Harry Potter for all it's worth, more and more and more money.I feared this day would come. This just makes me sick to my stomach. But by all means, have fun in your little village.

A little too commercial... Regardless, I am SO there. I just hope it's satisfying.

For all of those that are disappointed that it's in in the US, it is time to get real. Orlando is the number 1 tourist destination in the world. These books have a world wide appeal - look how many languages that it is published in. Orlando makes sense. Universal Studios also makes sense. DIsney's MGM Studios are locked into their product. Universal is where movies are made. Islands of Adventure is routinely voted the best theme park in the world and it has been my favourite since it opened. Corporations are in the business to make money and bring back returns to their shareholders. If you want a piece of it, start buyting Warner Brothers and/or Universal Studios shares (might have to figure out who the parent company is though). Please don't write me off as an unknowing American. I went to a British girl's school while I lived in London as a child. I was their only American in the first 100 years of the school's existence. I am a complete Anglophile. The Harry Potter books have been an excellent export for you. It is sooo English, as it should be, and I for one love it for that. It brings me home.

WOW!!!! a harry potter theme park!!! i cant wait for it to open!!!! but why is it in the Us!! Thats soooo unfair!!!!!i mean the Harry Potter books are set in the UK so its only fair that the theme park should be the UK somewhere!! I dont want to travel all the way to America for it, although it would serve as a nice holiday!!!!

Posted by Czechmetz May 31st 2007

HOLY CRAP! *hyperventilating* omg! This is so fricken GREAT!!! Ok, I'm going the day it opens. ahahaha, this is awesome!

Posted by proud2bus May 31st 2007

OMG OMG OMg I never thought they would do it~ Yay

Posted by violetfay May 31st 2007

suelene 13 I don't think anyone is actually reading either mine or your comments towards this as I see the US bashing continues and it makes me very sad to see that. I love harry potter no matter where they have the park. :)

Posted by dobby_rocks May 31st 2007

First America gets movie 5 on the 11th and now we get a theme park. Well I’ve never been to Orlando but will defiantly make a trip to go to this park, perhaps even with my Harry Potter meet up group. How awesome who knows maybe eventually they will build one over in the UK too.

That's so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's actually real, and not just a rumour! Yay!

Posted by K8y May 31st 2007

Wow! Too bad I won't be able to see it any time soon - I've got a phobia of flying and haven't been to the states since I was five! (I don't think I could stand a 9 and a half hour flight from the UK to the park!) It looks amazing though - especially the 'Owl's view' one... I wonder if they'll hold any future movie premiers there (The Pirates of the Caribbean 3 one was held at the Disney Land park in California) that would be really cool!

OMG OMG OMG OMG, I'm sooooo excited. I don't know if I can contain myself long enough to wait. I already informed my Mother I will be visiting her in Florida shortly after this new attraction opens.

I am so excited about the theme park! It looks beautiful and like tons of fun! I can't wait!

Posted by Dragonprincess25 May 31st 2007

I am kind of shocked that the people from the UK are not pissed about this. I mean it's written by someone from the UK and it takes place in the UK. I am from Chicago and my parents have a summer home in Florida, so I think that this is great. I am almost certin that they are going to make a ride. I am also looking forward to seeing the Forbidden Forest the most.

Posted by snapdragon May 31st 2007

AAAAHHHHHHHH THIS IS SO COOL! THANKS, ANDREW! I cannot wait. I went to Disney World a couple weeks ago and wanted to visit Universal Studios really badly but we just didn't have the money. The next time my mom and I go, it will be strictly a Universal Studios Park vacation so we can go to this! I'm SO excited! ;D ;D ;D I've always wondered what a HP theme park would look like! I really hope Hogwarts castle will be like an actual castle inside and out, unlike Cinderella's castle where all it is is a store, a restaurant, the Cinderella suite, and a room for Tink's take-off tower. We should be able to walk through it at our own will! And wouldn't Quidditch be a cool ride? It would be cool if there was a thestral ride but that may scare little kids. Ahhh, the possibilities. ;D

Posted by crookshanks876 May 31st 2007

OMG!!!! I'm so glad I live in Florida....just an hour and a half drive!!!! WOOOHOOOOO

Posted by mrs_weasley May 31st 2007

I'm so upset! Sure the theme park will be awesome, but why do all the good things have to be in America?! It's not like I don't think that America should have good stuff like this aswell, but I can't afford to stay in America! Let alone pay for the theme oark aswell! I guess I'll simply have to dream...

Posted by jadeblack May 31st 2007

My kids are so excited, they can't wait to go!!!! Really it's my kids, not me. Ok it's mostly me!!!

Posted by Lily_Windsor May 31st 2007

Hey, just because I (and other Brits) wish our country would get some credit for HP and have it here, does not mean we're bashing the US. I have nothing against the US at all. In fact, I intend to marry an American (the men are so darn sexy) but I am very loyal to my country, and we are a country of literature. And HP is one of the greatest literary heros of modern times, so how can you blame us for wanting the park here.l It's nothing against the US!

Posted by NeedARemembrall May 31st 2007

Excuse me for a moment- *dies*

Posted by phoenixknight May 31st 2007

OH YEAH! COWABUNGA!!!! I'll be 20 then and in my second year in college...So that will be the bomb! LAURA MALLORY'S WORST NIGHTMARE HAS FINALLY RISEN...A HARRY POTTER THEME PARK! I HOPE SHE DOESN'T TRY TO GET THIS ONE BANNED, OR HIRE A GROUP OF EXTREME EVANGELICALS AND BOMB IT, LOL! Whatever, this is 3 years from now, why are sooo excited, it's not like it's this year, lol! I know! It's because it's coming the SAME YEAR the Final HP movie DH will be coming. wow, 2007 and 2010 will be one heck of a HP year!

Posted by violetfay May 31st 2007

Lily_Windsor if you look back at some of the comments made some of them were bashing and kinda nasty. also read back and you will see and maybe understand more about why the park is being made in the US and not the UK warner bros = movies univerdal studios = movies warner brose makes the HP movies and universal studios has attractions mostly all based on movies NOT BOOKS so warner bros + universal studios + HP Movies = theme park in US Now if it were strictly about the book only believe me this park would be being built in the UK and not the US. Can you see and understand it now?

Posted by nifflerbabe May 31st 2007

That is so freakin cool

Posted by polkadots56 May 31st 2007

NO! OPEN THIS SUMMER!!! lol i know thats pretty quick, but i am going to orlando then! NOOOOO!

Posted by nickinoodles May 31st 2007

It should most definitely be in Britain. I don't care what people are saying about the theme park being based on the movies, blah blah blah... If people want an 'authentic' HP experience (or as near to authentic as you can get anyway!), they're not going to get it in a warm place with no British feel about it. HP is extremely British, there's very little American about it. I have nothing against America, I would very much like to visit sometime (not that I can afford it!), but I just find it very disappointing that they've gone for the commercial option. Believe you me, the theme park would do VERY well in Britain too. Everyone from Europe would go and I'm sure a lot of Americans would brave the pond-crossing! It's a total cop-out. Anyway, that's my opinion. Please don't eat me. :P

Posted by Lily_Windsor May 31st 2007

violetfay >>> If people were bashing and being nasty then shame on them! I don't have time to read them all seeing i'm at work, but I know some ppl were just having a bit of friendly banter. Also, it has nothing to do with understanding why the park is in the US as to why i'm still rather idignant about it. I'm aware Warner Brothers is Ammericfan, and in all honestly, the US probably does have more HP fans - particularly die-hard fans. I do get that, seriously i do. But I still wish it was in Britain. My reasons don't have to have sense with regard to promotion, popularity and money. But I stand by my country. And Harry potter would not exist were it not for a Kings Cross train ride! So yeah, i'm gonna argue for truth, justice and the British way.... not that that makes any sense... but you get my drift. ;)

To all of you who are peeved about the theme park being made in the states, think about these few points.... 1. America is much cheaper than the UK. The sales tax in Florida is only 8 or 9%. Isn't it almost double this amount in the UK, or greater? I heard one English woman in a line at a store in Disney World say that where she lives, the sales tax is about 17.5%. I think people from all over the world, especially people who live in countries that are even cheaper than the US, would benefit from it being in the US for this reason. 2. America is huge. The UK is only slightly smaller than Oregon. It would be much cheaper for the millions of American Harry Potter fans to spend only a couple hundred dollars for a round-trip ticket. Could you imagine all of these American fans coming to England for this? You guys would be hit with so many tourists, and millions of Americans would be paying $500+ dollars only to go to a little Harry Potter theme park, when they could be paying only about $250 to not only go to the HP one, but the rest of Universal Studios and even Disney as well. 3. Nope, I didn't forget the UK citizens. Because it's cheaper in the US than it is in the UK, you guys would benefit from this, too. You would be paying a lot less for your flight, hotel, admissions tickets and souvenirs than you would be in your own country. Also, Universal and Disney are visited by 35 million tourists a year. Would you like this in your own country? 4. Universal and Disney are already equipped to be a huge tourist attraction. Hundreds of hotels in one area, dozens of transportation systems, hundreds and hundreds of busses made solely to cart Universal Studios and Disney World tourists around, etc. You guys would have to build and provide a lot in a small space. There would be so much construction for this, it would be insane. I would feel sorry for whoever would have to live around it while it's being built. I love the UK, but this does seem like the best decision.

Posted by Draigfire May 31st 2007

JK Rowling has been in on this from the start she approved it. If America is OK with her thats good enough for me. Yipeeeeeeeeeeeee
