Latest Developments (10 AM EST):
- Official park website now open; visitors can sign up for e-mail updates.
- JK Rowling: "The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed."
Universal Studios and Warner Brothers made a joint announcement this evening from Leavesden Studios on the set of Dumbledore's Office to reveal that a Harry Potter theme park is currently in development. The image to the left is the first piece of concept art for the park: Hogsmeade Village.
Here's what we learned from Potter set designer Stuart Craig and a representative from Universal Studios (both of them hosted the big reveal):
- "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort"
- Announcement was made live via internet at 12:01 AM EST today to select media, including MuggleNet.
- Areas of park to include Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Castle, and the Forbidden Forest.
- 20 engineers working on project.
- Universal came to WB looking for authenticity.
- Potter park to be built in "Islands of Adventure" area of Universal.
- Stuart wants to "take his grandchildren" to the park.
- Opening early 2010.
- Universal's Potter website to be available at this link.
- JK Rowling has been involved "since the very beginning" of the project. Also "supportive and encouraging."
- Stuart thinks that the park will be better off in the United States.
- Have been in design "for at least a year and a half."
- "Important that the theme park represents the entire saga from Book 1 to Book 7"
In a rather cute way to end the announcement, the Universal representative asks Stuart Craig, "Now where's Dumbledore?" Stuart paused for a moment, looked around the office, and replied, "He was just here."
We'll be discussing these developments on this week's episode of MuggleCast (due out over the weekend). This post will be updated frequently as we learn more!

I am so there. Just TRY to stop me.
for once i'm happy that i live 10 minutes outside of universal. i'll be at that park every day.
Funglu: "I really want there to be a Harry Potter theme park, but Universal is the wrong company to do it with, Florida is not the right place for it, and I seems like it is going to end up being more of a museum piece than a theme park in ten to twenty years." But you don't take into consideration that Orlando is the number one tourist destination in the WORLD, second biggest conference center in the United States, and there is Disney, Busch Gardens TB (not far), and all sorts of attractions that..... ATTRACT people. Orlando is the best place in the world to build it, because more people will be able to see it. And about the engineers, there's probably only 20 blueprint engineers, but there WILL be LOTS more once they get all the building plans ready. You can probably expect a good 150-200 (or very possibly more) people constructing it once all the plans are ready. This will be their main attraction once it opens. They will not mess this up.
NOW LOOK AT THIS: THESE ARE THE TRANSLATIONS FOR THE DH: Croatian: Harry Potter i sveci smrtnici (”Mortal Saints”) Dutch: Harry Potter en het Fatale Heiligdom (”Deathly Sanctuary”) Estonian: Harry Potter ja Surmap hakud (”Saints of Death”) Finnish: Harry Potter ja kuoleman pyhimykset (”The Saints of Death”) French: Harry Potter et les saints mortuaires/mortels (”Deathly/Mortal Saints”) German: Harry Potter und die todbringenden Heiligen (”Deathly Saints”) Hebrew: Harry Potter ve Ruchot Hamavet (”Spirits of Death”) Italian: Harry Potter e il rito mortale (”Deathly Ritual”) Portuguese: Harry Potter e os Santos Mortuários (Portuguese, “Deathly Saints”) Romanian: Harry Potter si Ingerii Mortii (”Angels of Death”) Serbian: Hari Poter i Smrtonosni Blagoslovi (''Deathly Blessing'') Spanish: Harry Potter y los santos de la muerte (”Saints of Death”) Turkish: Harry Potter ve Olumcul Takdis (Turkish, “Deathly Blessing”) So what can we make out of this? Croatian, Estonian, French, Finnish, German, Portuguese and Spanish translations clearly state that DH are people! ''DEATHLY SAINTS''. The Hebrew translation isn't to much off the pace with the translation of ''SPIRITS OF DEATH'' because the ''Saints'' are probably dead so maybe we could call them ''SPIRITS''. But let's look at the other titles... What's up with the Dutch translation the ''DEATHLY SANCTUARY'', that can't be a person, it is either a temple or shrine or something like that, thus a building or place. Furthermore, the Italian ''ANGELS OF DEATH'' seems a bit off. And the identical Serbian and Turkish translation, the ''DEATHLY BLESSING'' which could probably refer to a spell or curse or some other ACTION. So now if we assume that the titles will match the book as it was the case all these years (at least in Croatia) we get contradictory titles. DH is a PLACE, PERSON and ACTION at the same time?! How can this be true? And to fire things up even more, Jo threw the ''Relics of Death'' into play. So ...
OMG! This is insane.......I can't wait! OMG. I am traveling around the world in 09, and I end it with a road trip across the states starting in California and ending in NY in the summer of 2010... and one DEFINITE stop will be THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER! After seeing the world, that will be THE PERFECT end to a yr long journey!
UNIVERSAL 2010 OR BUST
the site talks about hogwarts grounds and the forbidden forest. does this mean we will see hagrids hut because that would be fantastic!
OMG!!!!! Can't wait! Too bad I'm from Puerto Rico...but still, I'm going sooner or later!
HOLY &^%$*@#$ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE BEEEEEEESSSSSSTTTTTT THING THAT COULD EVER HAPPEN TO US SINCE WE FIRST FOUND OUT THAT THERE WOULD BE HP MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'VE DREAMED THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN FOR SO MANY YEARS........... AND NOW IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S REALLY ODD THAT I HAPPENED TO READ THAT ARTICLE RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO GO TO ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE IN 3 DAYS! WOW. AND YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE IS COOL?????? 2010 JUST HAPPENS TO BE THE YEAR I GRADUATE!!!!!!!!!! WHAT AN AWESOME WAY TO CELEBRATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! @%$@!*&^*^%$^ ^#@ I'M EXCITED I'M ACTUALLY SHAKING
omg sooo sickk. but frignn why cant it be in L.A???
I'm so freakin' excited!!! I live in Florida, and I work two miles away from Universal!! I can't wait. This is going to be so amazing!!
OMGGGGGGGGGGG!!!! that is so awesome!!!! 2010 that is so far away. i wanna fly there right there i mean drive lol. ahhhh that well be simply amazing....WOW unbelievable!
Holy crap I almost drove off the road when I heard this on the radio this morning on the way to work. I think I'll have to move to Florida once it opens.
I'm happy about this theme park. It sounds amazing. But why universal studios? Why not WB itself?
OMFG!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS??? THIS SO FREAKING AWSOME!!! IVE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN!
LAME. HP Park idea is lame. Oh, sure, it may sound nice, but they're bound to make into this cheesy "get your picture taken with the giant squid" type place. And an animatronic Dobby selling Elf dolls, with the inscription "My friend went to HP park and all I got was this lousy house-elf". No, trust me, it's gonna be a money ridden rip-off of a world we all adore. "Wanna go to the North tower?, it's another 20 bucks, folks. What? The Headmaster's office? No, by the looks of you, you can't afford it..."
OMG! That is so awesome! I can't wait til it opens!
it should be set in london, england. its great news cant wait though!!!
OMG! I can't wait for this!!!!!!
Way to be negative.........I dont think it will be that bad, i dont think it will be bad at all, it will be amazing actually. And I dont understand why you are part of mugglenet, if you think this to be such a lame idea.
I'm about to implode with excitement. OHMYGOSH. I have never been so happy to live in Florida in my entire life. *hyperventilate*
And here's my reason to go to Florida now :)
I cannot BELIEVE they think ORLANDO is the best place to build the Harry Potter Theme Park. The books are set in Scotland, which I can assure all Americans out there, has an extremely different climate to the hot tropics of Florida. It is an absolute abombination. How it can in any way be realistic is beyond me - Snow covered Hogsmeade in the baking heat? HELLO? American Staff with American Accents (not British, nor Scottish for that matter?) A BRITISH book written by a BRITISH person, with an immensely loyal BRITISH fanbase who see J K Rowling as one of their leading figures of society, and they build the Theme Park (which might actually attract more tourist to the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands if it was built there, and adds to the authenticity) in tacky tourist central. As a proud British woman, I am extremely disappointed.
yesss. my dad met some lady at a party a few weeks ago and she couldnt tell him but hu guessed what she was talking about annd then he called me and told me and i'm soo pumped its actually happening..
The only two times I've ever been more excited then this were the day I got married and the day my daughter was born. This is definitely next! LOL The only weird thing is in the hogsmeade picture, it looks like the train is about to plow everyone down lol
I just saw it on the BBC news - it looks really cool; they interviewed Stuart Craig and said that, by the time it's finished, the 'original fans of the books will be taking their own children to the park'. Every time they show a story about HP, all their chosen footage of midnight releases seem to show groups of little dressed-up kids - it infuriates me!! They always make it look as if it is still a children's series!!! I'm glad the films are getting higher ratings now - maybe that will show them that HP is not for kids!
I wish the people from the U.K. would stop saying America always gets everything. I mean, sure, we have the theme park, but you have the ACTUAL thing. I've been wanting to go to England for years to visit the Harry Potter sets and to see the locations the movie was filmed, but can't afford it. Do you know what I'd give to be able to be in London for the midnight release of Deathly Hallows? You can go to the actual hotel Jo was at when she finished writing the last book. You guys are so lucky because the actual Hogwarts is practically right in your backyard. You get the book 6hrs ahead of America because of the time change and the chance to walk through the real area the books are actually based on. Since you live in Britain you can audition for or try to get a part as an extra in the films. You're just immersed in Harry Potter culture over there, and you apparently don't know how lucky you are. The least you can do is not tear our heads off over things we have no say in.
I'm great with the location, but that's only because I live in Georgia! But I can see where all the angry British people are coming from :-(. Hopefully you'll get one 2! But , this is great. First Laura Mallory fails. Then a Harry Potter Theme Park. Ohhhh I want to see the look on her face...
oh my effing jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank the lord !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! too bad ill be 18...oh effing well!!!!!!!!!! im going there whenever im on vacation!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhh im screaming into t he phone, and i almost peed myself!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow this is so cool. I don't think there could be a better update on my last day of high school ever.
I am like, hyperventilating, this is AWESOME!!! I'm only a two day drive away from Florida!!! Even my non-Potter geef friends who make fun of me think it's really cool. Oh man, I can't wait!
I think the main reason why it's not in the UK is because the films were produced by an American company. And universal usually has all sorts of attractions for some of their most popular movies such as jurrasic park. It's got nothing to do with where the films/books are located. Besides I wouldn't want some tacky theme park built in one of the most beautiful places in the world such as Scotland and pretty much the entire UK.
Awww... I wish I lived in the USA...They won't be building one in Argentina any time soon...
Oh. My. God. That rocks!!! I'm totally going! I knew I loved living in Florida for a reason!!!!
Wow think about how from JK Rowling's point of view, movies and dolls and now a theme park! I wish it was opening now!!
jen_92 28 here here, I think you said it best............it's the truth they do have it all, they have the best part of HP and that's being soo close to all the REAL sites where it's been film and the areas the books are based on. you go girl, hopefully others will listen to you and stop all the nastiness. btw to get two things straight......it's not always HOT in FL especially central fl where orlando is.....it has been known to go down to 20 degrees in the winter months here and the sale tax IS very cheap actually between 7% - 7.5%
I don't think 'theme park' is the best choice to call it. Since they're adding on to the already existing Lost Continent Island at the Islands of Adventure theme park, then it's more or less a new land within Islands of Adventure and is included in the price of admission. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a HUGE park all it's own, it's not. Think of it as like Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. It's just a small piece of a much larger park. And I doubt they'll be putting in a roller coaster. For those that have been to IOA before and have been on Spider-Man, I'm betting the new attraction will be something ground-breaking along those lines.
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!Sorry, it's just that I was saying the other Day that they should build a park for Harry Potter. And my wish came true!!! I was going to Disneyworld next year but I called my Dad and told him theat we are going to have to go in 2010. This is going to be so AWSOME!!!I agree with JEN_92. Uk always gets everything so the United States should be able to have something that UK doesn't! I mean they get to walk in the sets of Harry Potter, they get to have the book a whole day before us,the movie realeases over there before the United States. It's United Kingdom who gets EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
soo cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! im sooo excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!
Im going to be 20 when that park opens and yet I can see my twenty year old self walking around there, wide eyed and mouth agape.... I hope they have a Severua Snape person (Although I would not want to be him because he would get /bothered/ alot....)
OMG!OMG!OMG! i am sooooooooooooooo EXCITED! the art work looks sooooo awesome! i am soo glad they are doing this! i live in PAKISTAN but i am going to make sure i visit it in 2010! and i am going to be there on the opening day! WOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not gonna be this happy until july 13/21!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait till 2010!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I'm excited!!!! This is so cool! Now when I make my trips down to Disney World, I can stop by and visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!!!!! lol that's so awesome. :)
OK... This is the Ultimate Mecca for Harry Potter fans!!! Jo's stories have meant so much to me and have been a major part of my life for some time now. It is going to be so awesome to take a stroll through JK Rowling's Imagination. To actually walk through the World of Harry Potter and bring a story that is so close to my heart just a little closer to reality is an unspeakable joy! I haven't traveled to many places and I feel like I'm bound by chains to my hometown, but you better believe that I will crawl to this place if I must. Hey, and maybe this will bring Jo to the States more often!!! The fact that we must painstakingly wait for three more years is kind of a bummer but I am willing to wait for them to make this world as closely detailed and formed as if they came straight from Jo's pensieve. Finally one more thing to Add to the Harry Potter world and something else for all of us to look forward to. Go Universal!!!!
omg aahh!! so cool!! i wanna go!!!!!!!!
Wow. That is really incredible. It looks so real -- I can't wait! I know where I'm going on vacation during the summer of 2010!!
Success! Only a twenty minute drive from my house. :D
OH. MY. GOD. I AM SPAZZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This borders on unbelievable. Of course, late 2009 means I'll only be 15 :P, but hey, if it's early 2010, sophomore spring break, right?!!!! I am like physically shaking at this point, and screaming at random intervals. I believe my mother has come in to check on me roughly 20 times. Imagine WALKING THROUGH Hogsmeade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Honeydukes delectables...OMG.CHOCOLA TE FROGS. And Zonko's, and WEASLEY'S WIZARDING WHEEZES!!!!!!!! And the Three Broomsticks, too!!! BUTTERBEER!!!! And then, in Diagon Alley, there'd be Gringotts! and OLLIVANDER'S!!!!!!!!!!!! (Oh crap, I just realized they could make that really cheesy. Like little 4-year-old cheesy w/ some old dude blabbering on like he's overly-happy while selling wands to you) And HOGWARTS!!!!!!!!!!! The Room of Requirement, moving staircases, the Great Hall, dormitories, the FAT LADY!!! THE KITCHENS!!!!!!!!!! DUMBLEDORE'S OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE OWLERY!!!! OH.MY.GOD. My heart rate is going in overdrive. I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!! Let's hope I can last 3 years. Hopefully by then, the 7th movie'll be on its way as well.
OH MY FREAKING GOD!!!!!!!! In 2010, I am so going to be there!!! But I hope that it won't be cheesy, and that they will be as realistic as possible to the HP Universe.
I have mixed feelings about it.....
