GrandPre: Reason for everything on DH cover
GrandPre: Reason for everything on DH cover The American Harry Potter illustrator, Mary GrandPre, recently spoke in an interview about her coveted job and a little about the Deathly Hallows cover. On whether people pester her for inside info on the books, Mary says: "Not really so much. I think people just know that I can't talk about it."

She says the cover of Book 7 is probably her favorite and thinks "it's fun to see the reaction from people. The fans that are really diehard fans look very closely at the artwork.

"I try to make everything have a meaning. There is a reason why something is in the illustration. I don't just put it in because it looks better. It really does have to have a meaning or part of the story has to support it."

Can`t wait to find out what the cover REALLY means!!!!

Posted by martus182 Jun 5th 2007

now if we only knew what those reason were we would be set

Posted by xdoxyx Jun 5th 2007

Everything she does is so awesome.

Posted by bella_rox_4eva Jun 5th 2007

I can't wait to find out what the really means! YAY! Even though I'm from the UK, I guess I'll still read the same ending and will be able to find out what the UK cover means too!

Posted by FawkesFriend Jun 5th 2007

She didin't ilustrate the british one though did she? Wonder who did that and if they put as much meaning into them... DH is very detailed on the kids version.... Any info ppl?

Posted by scotty_hp Jun 5th 2007

I am British but I like the American cover more. It has more meaning! 7th or 8th? Top 10 at least ;)

Posted by vttitan18 Jun 5th 2007

first top 10

Posted by Snuffles Jun 5th 2007

yes, can't wait to actually read the book, so i can understand the cover!

Posted by cheeringcharm Jun 5th 2007

Obviously the illustrators, Jim Dale, Stephen Fry, and the editors have read the book. I wonder how many people in all have already read it? I am so excited I can barely sit still!

Posted by fell4snape Jun 5th 2007

That is just so cool to know. 'Everything has a meaning.' Yep, that's been the case so far! Love her covers!!

Posted by amy4dan1327 Jun 5th 2007

very interesting!!! i really want to read it so i can figure out what the cover means!!!! :) :) :)

Posted by Rainbow_muggle Jun 5th 2007

Cool! I really love her artwork!

Posted by emmyv05 Jun 5th 2007

She has it right on! How many die hard fans in here have studied the cover of DH for some sort of evidence of what will happen in book 7?

Posted by Hele Jun 5th 2007

I prefer the British covers, and its not as if theres much detail on the american cover to attach meaning to!!

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jun 5th 2007

this isnt news to me. i dont like her covers as much as the british ones though. we dont have long to wait now. jason cockcroft has illustrated the last few covers now and its always a scene from the book, not lots of elements together.

Posted by toast10 Jun 5th 2007

The British illustrater does nt get 2 read the book, he jus gets little bits of the book 2 help him draw it. ROCK ON BRITS!

Posted by eyeheartlupin Jun 5th 2007

Oh, I love discussing the DH cover art.. glad to know it all has meaning and we aren't over-analyzing for nothing :) So does this mean that because Harry is wearing brown robes he really HAS joined the Jedi order? ::giggles::

Posted by Padfoot_SiriusBlack Jun 5th 2007

Everything, and all of her Covers are Amazing! She is a Great Artist!

Posted by FibstersMisfortune Jun 5th 2007

Hmmm....is there some hidden hint here? =/ *first 50* =P

Posted by mcorleone Jun 5th 2007

Yep, the book covers always keep us guessing until we finally get to read it. Anyone know if Mary Grandpre will be making any appearances for book releases/signings? I live in Sarasota Florida, her hometown and would like the privelege to actually meet her in person.

Posted by Hele Jun 5th 2007

"Oh, I love discussing the DH cover art.. glad to know it all has meaning and we aren't over-analyzing for nothing :) So does this mean that because Harry is wearing brown robes he really HAS joined the Jedi order? ::giggles::" LOL!! :D

Posted by andrewshomette Jun 5th 2007

I like the U.S. covers wayyyyy better. I think the British versions are...ugly really. " and its always a scene from the book, not lots of elements together." what do you mean by lots of elements together? no all of them were like that. The seventh is a scene, so was the sixth, and the fifth.

Posted by Prefiera_de_Gryfalco Jun 5th 2007

The UK kids cover may have more detail, but the US cover is artistically very beautiful. I don't like all hers (I was kinda meh on HBP for instance and I'm not sure why), but I do like this one.

Posted by SphinxXx Jun 5th 2007

When do we get to see the Deluxe Edition cover???!

Posted by SugarxSpunxQuill Jun 5th 2007

She seems really cool. I just have to say though, here in england we have different illustrators but they don't get as much attention as GrandPre does. I wonder why that is, as often i find the english covers alot better??? (IMO lol)

Posted by sirius4ev Jun 5th 2007

Cool! This means that there is a meaning for no wand, the people in the background, and no scar.

Posted by HarrylovesGinny92 Jun 5th 2007

I can't wait to find out what the cover means! I'm just dying to know!

Posted by mrs_weasley Jun 5th 2007

On the HBP cover, I think it's Dumbledore's wand is in the wrong hand...and his hand isn't black.... Oh well, not that it actually matters!

Posted by andrewshomette Jun 5th 2007

that would be funny if mary completely forgot about the scar and didnt put it on there, instead of it having a meaning. haha.

Posted by crookshanks876 Jun 5th 2007

Ever notice that Harry is wearing the locket? and both Harry and Voldemort are wearing brown robes and both are looking up and reaching for something???? Any one have any thoughts to this?

Posted by andrewshomette Jun 5th 2007

you dont listen to mugglecast..do you? they discussed all that a while ago.

Posted by muggle_magic Jun 5th 2007

I love her art. i have read all of the books at least a dozen times a piece and I always make an effort to just look at every little detail of her art on the covers. Every little thing holds a whole section of meaning. It's amazing. She puts so much thought into. She's brilliant.

Posted by crookshanks876 Jun 5th 2007

"andrewshomette" No I don't, sorry I have to work for a living. Was trying to get some answers. No need to be rude!

Posted by andrewshomette Jun 5th 2007

lol sorry i wasnt trying to be rude. i was just seeing if you did or not.

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers Jun 5th 2007

I really like her as an artist, but to be completely honest, she's not THAT great. I love all the Harry Potter covers, but they're aren't that great. I definately like them a lot though!

Posted by crookshanks876 Jun 5th 2007

Ok thanks! :)

Posted by tonks5 Jun 5th 2007

Speaking of the cover....Is it just me...or can anyone see Harry's scar? because I can't and its always in the middle on the covers...

Posted by bEtHyBoP13 Jun 5th 2007

i bet once we see wat the cover does mean we will be slapping ourselves for not thinking of whatever it means lol. i haven't seen the american ones up close before because im scottish or from the UK rather so the covers are different. i like the US ones a lot though!! i really cant wait to find out what the covers mean!! only 47 days??

Posted by ravenclawsheart Jun 5th 2007

I love her work!! I wonder if there is anything significant with the curtains?

Posted by bEtHyBoP13 Jun 5th 2007

i agree with ravenclawsheart, the curtains almost make it look as if they are on stage!

Posted by carpediem1991 Jun 5th 2007

I like the way Mary draws, even if I didn't like the first three book covers. She has also had some mistakes, as Dumbledore's hand or the bolt at Grimmauld Place... When I read the title, I was really hoping the article was going to TELL the reasons she had to draw that cover, but I was just being stupid... Oh, and by the way, Harry DOES have his scar. I zoomed the full cover in. It's only not as evident as the last books, and she drew it as it is in the movies.

Posted by carpediem1991 Jun 5th 2007

Oh, I forgot... I like the American covers, but have you SEEN the Ukranian ones? They're AWESOME!

Posted by honeydukes0209 Jun 5th 2007

that's really awesome! i can't wait to find out what everything on the DH cover means...she's a great artist!

Posted by Dobby4ever Jun 5th 2007

What does it mean then? I want to know!!! I like the english and the american covers, but my favourite covers are the danish ones. Carpediem1991, I haven't seen the Ukraine ones yet, but I'm going to, so I can tell you wether or not they're better than the danish ones.

Posted by Moaning_Myrtle Jun 5th 2007

I love Grandpre! I think she has done a great job with the covers, and making them very meaningful. I am always flipping back and forth from the text of the book to the cover as things slowly become clear. She is awesome! = ) ~MM~

Posted by Themistocles Jun 5th 2007

I used to like the UK covers more -- The US covers for PoA and especially GoF weren't very good, I thought. But the others are great! I especially liked the cover for HBP, and this time around, I think she's beaten the UK covers. Anyone agree?

Posted by carpediem1991 Jun 5th 2007

I've seen the Danish ones, Dobby4ever, and they're great in a wholly different way.

Posted by wougal07 Jun 5th 2007

very cool... I don't think I've ever been disapointed with the connection between the books and the story itself. I wonder what she would say if someone asked her what she thought of the difference between her artwork and the UK artwork!

Posted by Dobby4ever Jun 5th 2007

Hey, Carpediem1991. Seen the Ukrine ones now. THey're good. But my favourites are still the danish ones.

Quotes
I tell you, that dragon's the most horrible animal I've ever met, but the way Hagrid goes on about it, you'd think it was a fluffly little bunny rabbit. When it bit me, he told me off for frightening it. And when I left, he was singing it a lullaby.
