Interview with Blibbering Humdingers:
1. Why do you play wizard rock?
Because it's FUN!
2. What do you personally get out of being in a wizard rock band?
It is yet another way to interact with other fans who are as nuts as I am.
3. What influences your music/your style?
37 years of listening to music - Weird Al, Jethro Tull, assorted musicals, tons of celtic folk music, Billy Joel, Tom Lehrer, Yes, Men at Work, medieval & renaissance music, SCA bardic stuff.
4. How long have you been playing?
I've been playing music of one kind or another since 1978.
5. Do you plan to continue having shows and writing songs even though the Harry Potter series has been completed, and why?
Yes. JRR Tolkein completed LOTR long before I was born and there is still a very active fandom.
6. What is your favorite part of being in a wizard rock band?
Applause!
7. What is your least favorite part of being in a wizard rock band?
Trying to explain to muggles what it is we do.
8. What advice do you have for potential future wizard rockers?
Just do it. Even if you think you suck now, you'll get better with time and practice. The best songwriters are also the most prolific. Many of the songs you write will be crap. However, some of them will be gems, and good enough to share with others.
9. How do you explain wizard rock to people who are new to the genre or to people who (heaven forbid) have never read Harry Potter?
It's like popular music, but all written from the perspective of the Harry Potter universe.
10. Is your band completely DIY, and do you think that being completely DIY is an integral part of being a wizard rock band?
It depends on what you call DIY. I use some midi karaoke tracks, samples and loops. I also enjoy filk - so I often borrow tunes. However I put it altogether myself and sell my own recordings.
11. Have you ever been approached by a corporate record-label asking to sponsor your band? If so, what was your reaction and if not, what would your reaction be in such a situation?
Not this band. I was once approached to record some celtic/folk stuff -but they basically wanted to control what I did, for not much money.
12. Has your band ever had any copyright-infringement issues, and if so how have you dealt with them?
Because I do unlicensed filk, I skirt copyright issues daily. However,
I am so below the corporate radar I am not concerned.
13. Is there any specific message you would like to share with your fans?
There is a huge world of fan/fantasy music. I mostly perform as a bard in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) named Efenwealt Wystle.
Check out an SCA bardic circle sometime. You might have fun.
