MuggleCast #67 Roundup!
Posted on 16 Dec 2006 by Andrew
This week we begin with an e-mail from Rob of Salem, Oregon where he writes about dementors breeding:

I had always likened dementors to zombies, not alive but not dead, kind of just stuck in-between. I mean what really happens to a person when their soul gets sucked out, apparently its worse than mere death (POA movie). I had always assumed that when a person gets their soul sucked out they become a dementor, and by breeding, Fudge just meant that they were sucking people's souls out left and right and turning them into more dementors.

Michele from Missouri also had a similar opinion and provided a quote from the story:

It seems that dementors are created by feeding on someone long enough. I can't remember what Jo said happens to a person after their soul is sucked out of their body from the kiss, so this might be completely off. Here is the quote I'm getting this theory from:

"Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air and around them... Get too near a dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you… If it can, the dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself…soul-less and evil" - Lupin p. 85 POA Hardback US edition

On our discussion about Ginny becoming a traitor, Kavidha Natarajan of Malaysia sent in her perspective:

I don't agree with Ginny being the traitor... I think that Dumbledore (like it was said) sees the amount of trust and all that they've been through within the trio. The DA (read: Ginny, Neville, Luna) is more of a support group rather than attack group.

Basically I agree with Micah! There would be too much back story to cover if she did turn out to be evil.

Kelly of San Diego also had some thoughts on our traitor discussion:

I don't think Dumbledore intended to explain his trust in Snape when he told Harry that Snape regretted telling Voldemort about the Prophecy. Throughout the entire book Dumbledore seemed to maintain that he had no need to explain himself to Harry, and I don't think he ever did. Also, I don't think Dumbledore was limiting Harry when he told him to only tell Ron and Hermione. Harry instinctively kept it to himself so as to avoid giving anyone else reason to worry. It wasn't until Dumbledore told Harry to share it with his friends that he finally confided in them.

Good feedback all around! We continue to read everyone's feedback and we post some of our favorite e-mails here on the website and read them on the show. On Episode 68 we'll be talking about the House Founders in more detail...see you soon!

MuggleCast #66 Roundup!
Posted on 07 Dec 2006 by Micah
We begin with a response from Mayur, 17 of Canada. He says:

I know it looks pretty bad that WB is pitching out a trailer that contains recycled clips, but by watching it through simply as a trailer is meant to be seen, it's simply seen as a transitional lighting blast to take us from one scene to the scene with Snape and Harry practising Occlumency. I think it was sort of blown out of proportion during your last book, and let's face it: WB was forced to pitch out SOMETHING with Potter fans like ourselves hooting and hollering for an update.

Well Mayur, I don't know about our "last book," but I got the point. Mannnnnnnnnnnny of you wrote in saying that you noticed from the first time you saw it, that the graveyard scene from Goblet of Fire was being used in the Order of the Phoenix trailer, and that given where it lies within the sequence (very close to Snape's Occlumency lessons), that perhaps this is in there because it is a flashback.

I don't think we were disputing that or saying it was not a possibility, but the bigger issue was that it was in the trailer taking the spot where another fifth movie shot could have been used.

Judd, 17 of California writes concerning the voicemail we had on hearing voices behind the Veil:

On last week's episode of MuggleCast you were all talking about why Ginny heard something through the Veil. Ginny didn't hear the voices, it was Luna.

This is in fact correct (I checked the book). While both Ginny and Neville are "entranced" by the Veil, it is only Luna who responds to Harry when he asks who else can hear the voices.

Finally, Darren, 21 of Minnesota has this to say about the Horcrux voicemail mentioned in last week's episode:

I am wondering what you all think about the possibility of the Horcruxes having shown up in the books already? There are seven Horcruxes (counting You-Know-Who) and seven books. The locket is in the fifth book (which I think Harry will need his Parseltongue) and the diary in the second. The ring in the sixth. So, whats in Books 1, 3, and 4?

A very intringuing question.

More awesome responses to voicemails and a great discussion on Traitors and Innocents to come in Episode 67!
