Update: The transcript for Episode 61, our Halloween episode, is now up as well.

MuggleCast #62 Roundup!

Hello Potter Pickles!

We're over the moon at how well-received the Luna Lovegood discussion was, but surprisingly, the majority of our listener feedback did not surround our favorite quirky Ravenclaw. Aside from Micah's chipmunk news (which, I assure you inspired laughter that could drown out "the shot heard 'round the world") all you listeners seemed to be the most interested in the infamous "Lost Day".

Many of you have pointed out what Megan from St. Louis said:

I was listening to the latest MuggleCast on my computer when you brought up the Missing Day Theory. I decided to look in the calendar and see what day of the week Halloween fell in 1981 (assuming that Nearly Headless Nick's deathday party in Book Two sets the timeline for the series). Halloween in 1981 fell on a Saturday. In the opening chapter of Book One, Jo writes that the story begins on a Tuesday, and in the chapter, Harry isn't delivered until that evening. That would suggest that Harry was delivered on November 3rd, and that there's actually more than one missing day there.

This is great analysis and we will be having Brandon Ford from our own Underground Lake on the show very shortly to discuss his five-part editorial where he scrutinizes every detail from this time period. Until then, happy listening!

PS...Laura and myself co-conspired on this post, but since Laura's computer hates her, I figured I would extend my blog-posting streak to four.

Episode 57 Transcript and Episode 62 Update
Posted on 05 Nov 2006 by Micah
The transcript for our "lost" episode that we taped prior to our Los Angeles podcast is now available. We go in-depth on Petunia Dursley, take listener rebuttals on homeschooling and answer various voicemails. I am working to get Episodes 60 and 61 up as quickly as possible!

MuggleCast #61 Roundup!

First off, some of you wrote in wondering why Moaning Myrtle wasn't included in our main discussion considering she is one of the more active ghosts in the series. Truth is, we did discuss her, but she got flushed down the proverbial editing toilet. Sorry, Myrtle.

Secondly, please vote in the Poll that is just to the right of this post. It is a very close race as to who the fans think should win the debate about Halloween being a morally vapid holiday. Right now Jamie and Andrew lead Laura and myself by just 28 votes.

As a general note, not favoring one side of the debate or another, Candace from California points out:

"Originally Halloween was a day to celebrate the dead. If you take a look at Spanish and Mexican cultures they celebrate Halloween as Dia de Los Muertos, which means Day of the Dead. Trick-or-Treating resembles an old Medieval tradition called 'souling' in which poor people would go from house to house offering prayers for the deceased in exchange for food on what was then called All Souls Day."

Very educational! Tyler Gibson from Thomasville, North Carolina writes concerning the House ghosts:

"I had a great revelation during this. When Hogwarts was founded I'm sure that there had to be a few ghosts there. Since they were there when the creators were there, do you think that they might know what the artifacts of each House were? If so, could Harry talk to the ghosts and find out what they could be?"

This is an interesting point as it would mean that Harry would indeed have to return to Hogwarts in his seventh year. Plenty more to come on Episode 62.

Finally, I thank all of you who wrote thanking me for sort of guessing right about Jo updating her site. And no, I will not attempt to get out of doing the news as a chipmunk. A bet is a bet.

PS...Kathleen from Australia, please do not go around stealing candy from kids who come to your house dressed as something other than a Harry Potter character.

Prophecy Shattered

As you are all well aware Jo updated her site earlier today and in doing so shattered my prediction of a Book Seven title on Halloween.

But hang on...you think you're really slick, don't you Jo? Not only do you update your site on Halloween, but you toy with me by (in a way) revealing the title of Book Seven. This new, third title is as you say:

"...ahead by a short nose, or perhaps that should be a vowel and two consonants."

I am now convinced she just wants to me to suffer the punishment of not guessing correctly. You'll have to listen to Episode 61 to see just what that is.

I guess, after all, I do not possess the "noble art of divination." But Jo, we can still work something out for Christmas, right?
