Quibble of the Week: “The Deification of Severus Snape”

Our next Quibble of the Week submission comes to us from Glovebox, and she believes she has some controversial things to say about the much beloved character Severus Snape. For starters, she reminds us in her quibble that he was not so innocent:

“Snape was a Death Eater. While obviously he changed sides later on, the fact remains that Snape in his younger years believed in Voldemort’s ideals and wanted to advance them… If it had not been for Lily and the threat Lord Voldemort posed to his heart, Snape may never have changed.”

Sometime after we all read “The Prince’s Tale,” the word “Always” came to possess a new meaning in our collective fandom consciousness. We all mutually decided to love and forgive Snape for his unyielding coldness during Harry’s first six years at Hogwarts. But to what extent is forgetting Snape’s dark characteristics an insult to his memory?

And, if at the end of his life, he was trying to look at Lily and not at Harry through his eyes, is there evidence that Snape ever cared for Harry much at all? Would he have really wanted Harry to name a son for him?
