Dame Maggie Smith Cast as Twelfth Doctor

Amid internet rumors that Matt Smith will be leaving Doctor Who after this season, speculation has begun about who will next fill the Time Lord’s shoes. Sources from all around the internet are confirming that the 12th Doctor will be none other than – Dame Maggie Smith!

Who fans have been clamoring for a female Doctor for years, and it looks like now they’ll get their wish. I’m sure there will be no objections from Harry Potter fans – McGonagall could go head-to-head with a Dalek any day. What remains unclear is how this new casting news will affect Smith’s run on the popular BBC drama Downton Abbey. A recent interview with Smith about the Dowager Countess might give us a clue:

She’s gotta drop down dead at some point. Because [she] must be about 110, logically, in the thing.
