“Sweeney Todd” stage production, starring Emma Thompson, to air on PBS
The recent New York Philharmonic production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is now set to air on PBS program Live from Lincoln Center. It will be broadcast on September 26 from 9:00-11:30 p.m. ET on PBS stations. The production was staged for a few days back in March of this year at the Avery Fisher Hall and starred Emma Thompson (Professor Trelawney) as Mrs. Lovett and Welsh bass-bariton Bryn Terfel as the demon barber himself. Audra McDonald, a Tony winner and also fellow cast member of the show, will serve as a host during the program.
The production’s music and lyrics was originally created by Stephen Sondheim and the book written by Hugh Wheeler. It was first brought to stage back in 1979 and won a total of eight Tony Awards that year.
Who will be tuning into the PBS program in September? Was anyone lucky enough to catch the stage show itself in March? Let us in know in the comments.
