Video: Helen McCrory talks “Peaky Blinders” with Cillian Murphy
During the end of September/beginning of October, videos surfaced on YouTube from the press junket of Peaky Blinders Season 2, which stars Harry Potter actress Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy). The second season aired in the UK on BBC back last month, and to gear up for it hitting TV screens, McCrory joined fellow cast member Cillian Murphy to talk about it. The summary of the show (in which Murphy plays gang boss Tommy and McCrory plays his Aunt Polly) taken off its IMDb page sums it up as the following:
A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England, and centered on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby, who means to move up in the world.
In the first video – posted by Glamour – Helen comments on the show’s fanbase, saying that the reception “took everyone by surprise.” Both actors also talk about pulling off a Birmingham “Brummy” accent, McCrory saying she did so “tentatively.” At the end, Murphy mentions a hard shoot working on the film In the Heart of the Sea, which also stars Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody) and will be released next year. Take a look at what else they had to say below:
The second, which was posted by HeyUGuys, talks of character development and how the audience can travel with the characters over the season to witness said development. Helen also discusses the time period, particularly women in the 1920s. She goes into a little detail about stories her own grandmother had told her about that period in time. The relationship between both characters is also brought up – watch below:
During the third video, posted by Harper’s Bazaar UK, also focuses on the relationship between aunt and nephew and like the first video, talks about actor Tom Hardy being introduced and what he brought to the show, to which Murphy replies “fantastic facial hair.” The fashion is also mentioned, where McCrory mentions that her character’s clothes become “a bit more conventional” in the second season. Take a look at the interview below:
In the last video, posted by DIY Film, the character of Polly is discussed more, including the direction show maker Steven Knight wanted to take the character in the second season and how she’s not only family-orientated but focuses on herself also. Check it out below:
