Jonny also spoke a little more to Waterstones about the process of creating the covers, as well as what he thinks of the covers now:
Things got a little frantic towards the end. I found some of the covers extremely difficult and troublesome, mainly because I didn’t want to send anything I wasn’t completely happy with. And I’m rarely completely happy with any of my work. And I felt the weight of expectation and responsibility on my hunched shoulders, with such a humungous number of Harry Potter fans. When they were done, and there was no time to make any changes, I let out an almighty sigh of relief. And then realised that I had two lots of box art to do.
I’ve got both of the box sets on my desk. And now I’ve seen the boxes and the books inside, I’m pretty happy with my artwork. The books look great and have a lovely matte finish that I occasionally stroke. I’m not sure I’d want to do it again, but every evening I sit with my nine[-]year[-]old daughter as she reads The Philosopher’s Stone for the first time, and it all seems very much worth it.
