Becoming Fred & George: Freakishly Generous #MNBHP
It’s a wrench, giving it to you,” said Fred, “but we decided last night, your need’s greater than ours.”
PoA
Fred and George gave the Marauder’s Map to Harry. Not because Harry asked or because they really didn’t need it—though they say they don’t, I’m sure they could find plenty use for it especially when Umbridge arrives—but because they see Harry’s need is greater than theirs. He has been left behind on Hogsmeade Weekend. There is no way for him to get permission to go because the Dursleys won’t sign his form. But, with the map, he is able to sneak out and join his friends.
How many of us, having found the Marauder’s Map, would give it away? I know I would struggle to let go of such an artifact, though I don’t know what I would have used it for. (I was one of those who were terrified of getting in trouble.) Still, it would have been nice to have a magical GPS of the entire castle, especially since the staircases are always rearranging themselves.
Generosity does not come easy. It requires laying down our desires for the sake of others. It requires watching for ways to help others instead of keeping our thoughts on achieving what we want for ourselves.
CHALLENGE:
Be freakishly generous like Fred and George. Look for ways to help those around you today to have a better day instead of focusing on what you want, what you deserve, what will make you happy. The key to being happy is to stop thinking about ourselves and, instead, to think about others. It is amazing how putting a smile on someone else’s face often puts an even bigger smile upon our own.
