Second Rockin’ Charity Yule Ball takes place in Edmonton!
This weekend (January 3), the second Rockin’ Charity Yule Ball took place in Edmonton, Canada. The charity ball, which consists of a dinner and dance with music by local artists, was run by the local Edmonton Potterwatch Institute for Charity (EPIC). EPIC is a
non-profit society that harnesses the passion surrounding the Harry Potter series to promote activism within its community.
The society has previously participated in the Harry Potter Alliance book drive, donating over 20,000 books to local communities. The proceeds from this year’s ball will go to iHuman Youth Society, a local Edmonton charity that works with traumatized young people. The president of the society, Yara Kodershah, said,
I think part of why Potterwatch works is because there is that persistent interest in Harry Potter and pop culture.
When you are trying to sell Yule Ball tickets and you present it as a Harry Potter-style charity ball, you have a better chance of gaining interest.
Which isn’t to undermine the work that my team has put in in terms of getting the word out and forging connections to sell tickets, but we’re coming from a very accessible angle.
Last year’s ball raised nearly $8,000, so let’s hope this year they raised as much – if not more!
