Newt and Porpentina: How Will Their Love Story Unfold?
Newt Scamander and Porpentina Goldstein’s love story will be played out in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise. Newt will be played by Eddie Redmayne, and Porpentina will be played by Katherine Waterston.
We don’t know much yet, but we do know Porpentina was described as “grounded,” while her sister Queenie was described as a “bombshell.”
We know she and Newt in later life owned three Kneazles.
We also know the name Porpentina most likely derived from Porpentine, which means “porcupine-like” and was used by Shakespeare in The Comedy of Errors. (For a full explanation of Newt’s name, you can find it here.)
This leads to a few possible predictions:
- Fantastic Beasts may pay homage to The Comedy of Errors (one of Shakespeare’s most farcical plays, in which two sets of estranged twins get mixed up). Maybe Fantastic Beasts will use a mistaken identity trope as well… it could fit in with what we know so far – considering Newt was only meant to stay in New York “for a few hours.” If there was a case of mistaken identity, it might be an explanation as to why he was detained…
- Tina’s name might give us a clue as to her character – if so, it could indicate she wasn’t particularly receptive to Newt’s romantic overtures at first…
- Tina may have always had several Kneazles; maybe Newt needed to consult her about the way he covered Kneazles in his book.
- Maybe Tina had a love of Shrakes – “a magical fish covered entirely in spines and found in the Atlantic Ocean,” and her obsession led her to forcibly keep Newt in New York and make him include Shrakes in his book. From there, no doubt, love blossomed.
