Life Lessons from the Sorting Hat
We all know and love the Sorting Hat’s songs, but I don’t think that we often appreciate just how awesome the advice within the lyrics is. So here are six of the best bits from the Sorting Hat’s song in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:
1. HATCH YOUR OWN DARING PLAN!
They shared a wish, a hope, a dream,
They hatched a daring plan
To educate young sorcerers
Thus Hogwarts School began.
The whole idea of sharing your wishes is a huge thing to remember; by working together and being open and honest about how you want to change the world is an amazing thing! Without the four founders, our favorite school in the world would still be a dream. Dreaming big is the first step to making the world a better place!
2. BE YOURSELF (You’re awesome!)
Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones they had to teach.
We all have those thoughts, when we think we’re a little too odd or “out there.” But hey, we need to embrace our differences and celebrate that we’re individuals! Remember that everyone favors different qualities, so if it doesn’t work out with one person then it will with another.
3. ROAR LOUD AND PROUD
By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
Take the plunge! Embrace the lion within and make Gryffindor proud – even if it is just to have the courage to visit the dentist!
4. MAKE YOUR BRAIN YOUR BEST FRIEND
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;
Being clever isn’t just about how many books you read and how many questions you can answer correctly. This is also about being willing to learn and using it in the other aspects of your life. A bit of Ravenclaw organization and curiosity can be the answer to your problems!
5. SHOW YOUR PASSION
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
A bit of hard work soon pays off. Show your passion by putting in the effort, and you’ll be surprised at the good things that will come your way. As mentioned before, maybe this is the Year of Hufflepuff?
6. EMBRACE YOUR AMBITION
And power-hungry Slytherin
Loved those of great ambition.
The term “power-hungry” is often taken as a negative attribute, so let’s focus on ambition instead. We all need a bit of direction in our lives, so why not use our ambition to find a direction of our choosing. C’mon, we know Slytherins are not all bad.
Growing up and learning how to be an adult is hard enough. What would we do without the life lessons of Harry Potter? Share your favorite lessons from the books below!
