Life Lessons from the Sorting Hat – Part 2
It seems that this is a good time of the year to get some more advice from the Sorting Hat! At a time when we’re all reading about self improvement – “new year, new you” type things – why don’t we look the words of wisdom from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix?
United by a common goal,
Sometimes, it can feel as though the world is a big scary place. There are billions of people living their own lives, going on their own journey through life, and sometimes it can all be a bit overwhelming. But we all have things in common! It could be Harry Potter, reading, or cooking. Take the time to find the things you have in common instead of focusing on the things that separate you.
And pass along their learning.
Education is not as simple as recounting information for yourself; it is also about sharing what you have learned. Helping those around you is one of the best ways to do this! So why not start this year by making an effort to help your friends, family, and community. Go take a look at our #PotterItForward campaign for some inspiration!
And never did they dream that they
Might some day be divided,
We all have differences of opinion or think there might be another way to deal with a situation. Friendship is one of the most important and most beautiful things you can experience in your life; you should treasure this! Be diplomatic, be kind, and if you follow this and you still can’t see eye to eye, you can always agree to disagree. Having different opinions and thoughts is what makes us special!
But then discord crept among us
Feeding on our faults and fears.
Don’t give in to your fear!! Even though it works to protect us, it’s good to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself every now and again. Focusing on that niggling voice inside your head can only get you so far, and hey, it’s not that fun! Be brave and stand up loud and proud!
Though I am condemned to split you
Still I worry that it’s wrong,
Though I must fulfil my duty
And must quarter every year
Still I wonder whether Sorting
May not bring the end I fear.
Oh, I know the perils, read the signs,
The warning history shows,
This is a really important quote (thank you to Iain who commented on my last Sorting Hat post). Although times are hard and there are so many issues in this world, don’t let these issues break apart and separate the world anymore than it already has. Embrace your uniqueness and love for the world and let that make the world a friendlier place. After all, it’s only water or land between us, and that’s nothing for us wizards!
