Five Things Daniel Radcliffe Does Better Than Harry Potter
We’re all familiar with the wonders and adventures of the Boy Who Lived, wizards and Muggles alike. Spanned over seven books and eight feature films, Harry Potter is an iconic figure in modern fiction. Prior to the release of his film Victor Frankenstein on DVD, Junkee interviewed Daniel Radcliffe, who spent the better part of his life portraying Harry Potter. He may not be the Boy Who Lived off-screen, but there are some things even Harry Potter could pick up from the 26-year-old actor.
1. He makes fantastic tea.
Daniel Radcliffe’s filmography post Harry Potter is certainly a colorful one. One of his quirky roles is that of Igor in Victor Frankenstein, alongside James McAvoy. Maria Lewis from Junkee reported that the ever-polite Daniel Radcliffe made her a cup of delicious tea during the interview. She says,
As I take my first sip of the beverage Radcliffe absentmindedly made me while talking about his latest film Victor Frankenstein, I can’t help thinking about how bloody good it is.
2. He’s very good at collecting crew hats.
It looks like Dan is quite fond of crew hats from movie sets. He talks about how he prefers wearing caps or hats from movies other than his own, saying,
You always get given crew hats, but I never like them from my own movies — I always like getting them from other people’s jobs. My friend just worked on Captain America, and I got a cap from that — which is great because I can actually wear it out of the house without feeling like a f*cking dweeb in a Harry Potter hat.
3. He can rap!
While it may not be as fancy as defeating the Dark Lord himself, it’s a pretty cool talent to possess. After his amazing performance of “Alphabet Aerobics” on The Tonight Show went viral, his rap prowess has been the talk of the Internet. But if you’re expecting him to drop a single anytime soon, don’t hold your breath.
Whenever I do rap, I realise there’s something inherently embarrassing about watching white people rap or — particularly — a middle-class white boy from England. […] We all know how it goes when actors try to have singing careers — it doesn’t go very well. Jack Black is the only one I can kind of think of where you go ‘yes, do music whenever you like — you’re awesome, that’s a great band’. The rest … I dunno, I’ve never really seen a convincing crossover.
Dan may not take his career as a potential rap musician seriously, but we’d definitely like to see more of his impromptu rapping skills.
4. He knows his rap artists.
A good portion of the interview focuses on Dan’s favorite rap musicians, namely Eminem, Plan B, and Blackalicious. He enthuses about these artists, citing that Plan B is “f*cking amazing,” and talks about his obsession with Eminem’s music, saying,
Eminem’s lyrics have always been an obsession of mine to the point where I anaylse lines: I just think he is so f*cking clever. It’s sometimes hard to listen to and rough — but just the word play and how he can do several things in a line and make you laugh.
5. He’d do (almost) anything for the sake of art.
From some nudity on Broadway to playing the role of a farting corpse, there’s very little Daniel Radcliffe won’t do for the sake of art. He talks about one such instance while shooting Victor Frankenstein, where James McAvoy had to suck pus from Radcliffe’s fake hump.
That’s the thing, the sucking out was not in the script — it was syringed out in the script. […] We were all on board with it, as it was completely gross and hilarious, and then we went outside after we did the scene and saw the faces of the Fox producers who were genuinely looking like, ‘what have we got ourselves in for, do we need to separate these two already?’
