Carmen Ejogo Talks “Fantastic Beasts”, Seraphina, and Left-Handedness
With the hype of Fantastic Beasts getting bigger by the day, here’s a little something else to get you even more excited!
At the time of filming, the Pottermore Correspondent managed to catch up with actress Carmen Ejogo, who will be playing the character of Seraphina. During their exclusive interview, Ejogo went into depth about her character’s traits, more specifically about Seraphina’s left-handedness.
Ejogo is naturally left-handed, but as far as her character goes, she reveals that a lot of historical research went into making who Seraphina is, not to mention her own input into the costumes.
It’s been a lot of fun to come up with a look and a personality that has that element of other-worldliness; I’ve never had to do that before.
The costume for Seraphina has been this wonderful evolution in the hands of costume designer Colleen Atwood. She was great because she let me contribute. All of my rings, for example. I said to her that maybe [Seraphina] should have all these rings on her fingers.
I’m left-handed, actually, naturally, but I know that that’s a very magical trait. I’d be thought of as a witch years ago. So I wanted to really emphasize my left hand, and I thought we could put rings on it. Colleen was really into that idea
For those who don’t know their history, Pottermore explains that being left-handed has had a known connection with Dark Magic for centuries – from the devil to witches to Joan of Arc.
The legacy of Salem will apparently be noted throughout the movie – this includes a group of protesters against witchcraft (The Second Salemers) and Seraphina paying “tribute to the victims of witch hunts across the centuries with every movement of her hand.”
