Emma Watson Is Addicted to Social Media in “The Circle” Trailer
2017 is shaping up to be a big year for Emma Watson. In addition to starring in Disney’s hotly anticipated live-action Beauty and the Beast, the actor and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador is starring alongside Tom Hanks in sci-fi thriller The Circle. You can check out the first trailer below.
The film introduces Watson as recent college grad Mae Holland, who lands her dream job at a tech company called the Circle. The mysterious Silicon Valley organization was founded by a charming Elon Musk/Mark Zuckerberg/Steve Jobs type named Eamon Bailey (played by Hanks), and the Circle’s big tech innovation is SeeChange, a tiny glass camera that allows users to share their thoughts and lives with the world.
Director James Ponsoldt explains,
Bailey’s notion is that knowing is good, and knowing everything is better. He believes all experiences should be available to everyone, not only the privileged or people who can afford them. He’s deeply interested in technology that can make people share all human experiences with everyone. He’s a boundary pusher, even boundary destroyer.
Before long, Mae trades in her customer service job for documenting her life full-time through SeeChange, turning herself into a worldwide celebrity. But after meeting with a Circle programmer, Mae starts to wonder whether there’s something sinister at the heart of the company.
Based on Dave Eggers’ 2013 bestselling novel of the same name, The Circle also stars John Boyega, Karen Gillan, and Patton Oswalt and will hit theaters on April 28, 2017. Are you excited for this film? Let us know your thoughts!
