Hollywood’s Favorite Female Film Characters Revealed
The variety of roles available for women and the lack of gender equality in Hollywood is an ongoing discussion that doesn’t seem set to end soon. As part of this ongoing discussion, the Hollywood Reporter surveyed a range of Hollywood professionals to find out their favorite female fictional characters and compiled a list of 50 characters.
For THR‘s latest intra-industry poll, the editors asked Hollywood professionals — actors, writers, directors and others — to take an online survey of their favorite fictional female characters. More than 1,800 participated — twice as many women as men — but the results proved, there isn’t such a great divide between the sexes after all, at least when it comes to what types of females we enjoy watching on screens.
Perhaps it’s no surprise that our very own Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson) topped the list. Here’s what Emma Watson said about the character and why she deserved to be No. 1.
Her empathy, her sense of integrity, her decency and resolute belief in fighting for justice and fairness — even when her earnestness made her an easy target for ridicule — they’re all unwavering. She’s all head and all heart. […] Hermione made it OK for girls to be the smartest in the room. To be a leader, the one with the plan. She’s not just a role for me, she’s a symbol. I am deeply proud to have played her.
Of course, we’re not surprised that Hermione tops the list – she’d go straight to the top of ours too.
And you can now vote and have your say on your favorite female film characters from the 50 characters chosen! Check out the brackets here to see all the matchups and vote for Hermione. The winner will be announced on December 23, so check back then.
