A Cautionary Tale for Hufflepuff House
As a teenager, whenever I declared that I was a Gryffindor through and through, it was always met with a chorus of “You only like Gryffindor because it’s Harry’s House! Why aren’t you original?“
It left me with an underlying unease, questioning whether I had decided on Gryffindor because of my love for the trio. The more I learned about myself as I grew up, I realized this was far from the truth, and I was okay with that.
And so I come to you to issue a word of caution to proud Puffs around the globe: Keep your House qualities close to you and show the world what it really means to be a student of Hufflepuff!
Newt Scamander is a fantastic (pun intended) character and a proud Hufflepuff. His meteoric rise to fame in the Muggle world has catapulted Hufflepuff House into the limelight. But there will always be those who choose a House because of a leader, instead of looking at their own qualities. As much as I love the cheers for my House when I’m at a Potter event, I feel sad that the other Houses aren’t embraced.
So I challenge Hufflepuffs to rise to the call of duty. This is your chance to show your pride, embrace the warmth, and remind people of the qualities that it takes to be in your House. For too long you have sat in the shadows. When you’ve proudly declared where you have been Sorted, it’s been met with nudges, smirks, and giggles. Learn from Gryffindor’s mistakes and showcase the best your House has to offer.
Cedric Diggory was the true embodiment of what it is to be a Hufflepuff. He was thoughtful and caring, and he challenged the wrong deeds of others. He stuck up for what was right and true, instead of following the crowd. He rose to the occasion as Hogwarts’s champion and was a shining example of his House.
Newt Scamander, although lacking the charisma of Cedric, cared deeply for the rights of others. He, too, challenged the status quo. When everything was against them, he would put their needs in front of others.
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil
Protect your House, and prove that to be a Hufflepuff isn’t a joke or purely a choice because of Newt. It’s time people stood up and listened to you! I’m eagerly awaiting to see your response and will stand proudly next to any Puff who answers the call!
