Emma Watson Continues Her Unrelenting Fight Against Domestic Abuse
Known for her global women’s rights activism, Emma Watson is an influential figure who has maintained her stance on gender equality and the need for politicians to officially combat all forms of domestic violence.
Just as Hermione Granger fiercely advocated for rights of house-elves through SPEW, it appears that Emma channels similar passion and determination in advocating for women’s rights.
In doing so, she displayed staunch support for Member of Parliament Eilidh Whiteford’s bill, which would call for the UK Government to ratify the Istanbul Convention on domestic abuse.
According to Emma, although the Convention was signed by the government in 2012, ratification is necessary or else “the convention is just a piece of paper.”
In ensuring her voice be heard, Emma wrote a letter to all members of Parliament raising concerns of ongoing domestic violence and opportunities for the Istanbul Convention to prioritize and combat all forms of abuse and violence against women and girls.
It sets legally binding standards for addressing all forms of violence against women – physical, sexual, emotional or financial – as well as stalking, forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
It recognizes violence against women comes in different forms and manifestations and requires a comprehensive and integrated response.
Extremely grateful for her support, Whiteford recognized Emma as a “talented woman who has used her ability to reach millions of people” to raise awareness of and combat gender-based violence.
She is one of the inspiring people who have helped to build a grass roots campaign for change. The women’s movement has always been ahead of the curve, leaving Parliament to catch up.
Just like her magical counterpart, Emma proves herself a true Gryffindor through her courage and determination to stand up and tirelessly fight for what she believes in.
