Misprint in New Scholastic Edition of “Fantastic Beasts”!
One print run of the new edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as published by Scholastic has a glaring misprint: It’s missing an entire paragraph!
Misprints in books are nothing new, though misprints in the Harry Potter books have been known to create collector’s items. As Hypable points out in its post about the discovery, this misprinted version of Fantastic Beasts might be worth something someday, so it might not be a bad idea to keep yours if you have one.
The misprint has been found in both individual copies of the newly released edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and copies packaged as part of the Hogwarts Library box set. The paragraph in question is the second of two paragraphs about hippogriffs:
The Hippogriff burrows for insects…
Regarding the fan, Michael, who discovered the error, Hypable provides this theory:
Michael speculates the paragraph may’ve been accidentally lost when they were adding in the section right below it about the Hodag, one of the six new beasts that J.K. Rowling added to the book in 2017.
Whatever the case, Hypable has updated its post to say that Scholastic has confirmed that a misprint occurred in the first printing. Part of their statement can be read below:
In the first printing of the newly updated Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, released by Scholastic, three sentences were inadvertently omitted. We regret this error, and we want to assure our readers that those editions are no longer being shipped and a corrected edition is now in print and being shipped for all current orders.
We want the Harry Potter fans who eagerly secured their copies on the initial release to be fully satisfied with their purchase. Therefore, any book with the missing sentences can be exchanged for the newer version by returning the book to Scholastic.
Does your new copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them have this misprint? Are you planning to exchange it, or do you hope that it will become valuable someday? Let us know in the comments below!
