Major League Quidditch Season Kicks Off!
Major League Quidditch kicks off the 2017 season with an action-packed weekend of games across the US!
If you’re in New York City this weekend, head on over to Brooklyn Bridge Park Saturday night when the New York Titans will take on the defending champs, the undefeated Boston Night Riders. If you’re down south, you could find yourself in Round Rock, Texas, watching the Austin Outlaws and the Kansas City Stampede battling it out, while out west the Phoenix Sol and the Los Angeles Guardians open the season in Tempe, Arizona. All of the games are free! Teams will play regular season games throughout June and July, until the championship in League City, Texas, on August 12 and 13, 2017.
Quidditch in the Muggle world got its start largely on college campuses (complete with a World Cup!), but Major League Quidditch is gaining ground as a professional sport, with 16 teams across four divisions competing for the coveted title. (The US isn’t the only country that loves quidditch; the Quidditch Premier League recently launched in the UK!) Though MLQ is a natural place for quidditch-playing Harry Potter fans to go after their college days are over, it also attracts athletes without those nostalgic ties who enjoy the fast-paced, full-contact sport for its own sake. With three years of MLQ in the books and the recent launch of Quidditch Premier League in the UK, quidditch seems to be gaining ground as a professional sport in its own right.
