Press Release
Registration Opens for Granger Leadership Academy
Registration for the Granger Leadership Academy (GLA) opened on Saturday, July 1, 2017. This is the 4th conference of the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) to inspire and train activist leaders. The conference will be held on March 15 - 18 at the Sheraton Tucson Inn and Suites in Tucson, Arizona. The conference includes leadership training, keynote speakers, guest presentations, a catered dinner, and a wizard rock concert.
The Granger Leadership Academy is hosted by the Harry Potter Alliance, the world leader in fan activism. The HPA is a non-profit founded in 2005 that uses fan enthusiasm and the power of story to effect change and promote social good. The HPA’s outreach includes hundreds of thousands of online members and 250 local chapters across six continents and 30 nations. The GLA conference provides a place for new and experienced leaders to converge in one place for an intensive weekend training. Attendees are assembled into teams to be trained in ways that utilize and strengthen their skills and experiences. The limited attendance size (200 attendees) allows for personalized community environment and opportunities for team building and mentorship.
Workshop topics have included feminism, environmental racism, research skills, bystander intervention training, volunteer management, and developing an elevator pitch. Past keynote speakers have included YouTuber and body positivity advocate Meghan Tonjes, literary representation crusader Swapna Krishna, creator of The Brain Scoop Emily Graslie, and Native scholar Dr. Adrienne Keene. The GLA also provides opportunities for attendees to submit proposals for workshops or to apply to be a student speaker. Proposal and application forms are available on the website.
The GLA is an all-ages conference. Our target audience is anyone who wants to become a hero in their community. Registered attendees range from gradeschoolers to retired witches and wizards. In order to get the most out of GLA programming, we’d recommend 12 years of age as a good age to start.
Early owl registration is only $50 and ends on August 31, 2017. Regular registration is $75 (deadline: December 31, 2017). Late registration is $100 (deadline: February 13, 2018).
