Harry Potter and the “Top Trumps” Match Game
A few months ago, I gathered with my closest wizarding friends and played a game of Top Trumps. If you haven’t read the review yet, what are you even doing here? Head over and read it now!
Well, we are back at it again with the Top Trumps! This time, the game needed only one opponent. So I called up my friendly neighborhood Hufflepuff, and we headed to the designated meet spot to take on this new game.
The game is called Top Trumps Match: The Crazy Cube Game. Intrigued? You should be.
So basically, the game involves two players. They sit opposite each other with the game in between them, very Battleship-esque.
There are rows of six-sided dice, each with a Potter character on them. The goal is to get five of one character in a row. It can be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal. The youngest person goes first, pushing the top-left die out of its spot. The other person then uses that die to push any other dice out of a spot in an attempt to get a match. The game continues until someone gets five characters in a row.
You are also given two character cards. You don’t look at the cards until the end of the game. At the end of the game, the winner shouts out “MATCH!” and tells the other player what character they matched. The loser then flips over their character cards. PLOT TWIST! If one of the loser’s character cards matches the character the winner matched, the loser steals the win and wins the game!
While this game certainly isn’t one for a large party, unlike the card game, I think it is perfect for a game night in with your bestie. It’s strategic and engages your mind but is also playful and fun.
It also garnered a lot of attention, and many people came up to us asking what game it was and where they could buy it.
Overall, I think it gets a solid 4 lightning bolts out of 5.
