My name is Megan Fischer.
Megan? Hi Megan!
Yes, it's very nice to meet you! A huge honor - big fan! I drove here seven hours from South Dakota.
Oh, really? My goodness!
So I am really excited to be here! I noticed you come to these events a lot. I was at the one in Minneapolis last year and saw you there as well. What is it about these types of events that you like the most?
The fans! Yes, the Star Trek fans know what they're talking about. They know what they've seen. They are the best thing on the planet.
You have been in the entertainment industry for a while. What do you think has changed about the industry the most, or even just the fans?
I don't think much has changed at all. People are people, and the ones who are attracted to Star Trek can communicate with each other when they've never seen each other before. It's wonderful.
It is wonderful! When you were working on The Original Series, did you ever consider the possibility that they would still be producing new content all these years later?
Yes, I presumed they would, because it's so good!
It is great. I love it! Have you seen Star Trek: Discovery?
No!
You haven't??
No, I'm waiting!
It's good! And it takes place ten years before The Original Series, so maybe we'll see Uhura pop up sometime!
At this point, someone walks up for an autograph and thanks Nichelle for listening to Dr. Martin Luther King (who convinced her to stay on Star Trek) all those years ago. Nichelle's face lit up and she grabbed the fan's hands and thanked them. It was an incredibly beautiful moment.
That actually brings me to my next question! So your role as Uhura was so pivotal and groundbreaking at the time. What do you think it is about her that makes her someone women want to look up to?
I'm doing it! [laughs] I put myself into what they say she is, and they took from things I said and things they wanted said, and I just turned out very nicely.
I also heard that you have a new project in the works, Noah's Room. Can you tell us anything about that?
No, not yet. [laughs] Except, you'll like it!
Okay! I'm excited to see more about it! I just have one more question: You've been in the business for over 50 years. Is there anything...?
I have not been in the business for 50 years! [laughs]
Is there anything you are still hoping to accomplish that maybe you haven't been able to do so far?
Oh, plenty! Yeah, I'm writing a book. I'm doing all kinds of things. I design my own clothes, and now I'm designing for others. So I'm having a lot of fun with my career!
Yeah, it looks like it! You're still doing great things, and I'm really excited about it! Thanks so much for sitting down with me!
Thank you! It was lovely to meet you!
